Melbourne City has reached A-League transfer window D-Day, with their hopes of securing Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren hinging on an overseas release.

City was hoping to unveil Maclaren by Thursday’s transfer deadline day, before unleashing Maclaren for Sunday’s six-point clash away to Sydney FC.

The Herald-Sun understands that the sudden departure of Hibernian manager Neil Lennon two days ago has cast doubt over the deal. Socceroos boss Graham Arnold has been linked with the Scottish club’s vacant post.

While Maclaren is understood to have verbally agreed a deal with Melbourne City, Hibernian is under no obligation to release the striker who is on a season-long loan.

It’s also believed that there are complications with Darmstadt, with European clubs traditionally seeking transfer fees for departing players who are under contract.

Maclaren, whose preference is City, returned to Europe after Australia’s Asian Cup exit while his future is decided.

A second visa signing, a versatile visa forward who’s played in England, is expected to arrive today (Wednesday) and is expected to feature in Sunday’s mega Round 17 clash.

But tension is rising in Bundoora, with City officials are waiting anxiously to see if Hibernian and parent club, Germans Darmstadt will release him.

City coach Warren Joyce has cut a frustrated figure, with several deals already falling over in the January transfer window.

Having played without a recognised striker since Bruno Fornaroli was banished three months ago, the coach is eager to secure a natural goalscorer before Thursday’s deadline — their last chance to bolster before finals.

If the Maclaren deal falls through, City faces a race against the clock to find another suitable striker.

City’s attempts to offload Fornaroli overseas have proved fruitless, with lukewarm interest failing to materialise into concrete offers.

Fornaroli must be released by Thursday if City want to bring in another marquee player.

Frustrated back-up goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has told City that he wants to leave, but the club are standing firm.

Socceroos-capped Birighitti wants to play and feels that he should be released for the opportunity to play, after he rejected offers from other A-League clubs to sign on the eve of the season.

Birighitti, 27, was clearly signed with a view to being City’s no.1, but veteran Eugene Galekovic’s stellar season has left him on the outer.

City’s annual mid-season purge has seen Anthony Caceres join Sydney FC, Malik leave for Saudi Arabia while Michael O’Halloran has joined St Johnstone after he was released due to homesickness.

Perth Glory will officially be the next destination of Bruno Fornaroli, with Melbourne City’s banished superstar agreeing to head west next season.

It’s understood that the sensational switch was finalised on Wednesday, setting up a mouth-watering City-Glory rivalry next season.

While a January trade for Andy Keogh collapsed, negotiations continued, with Fornaroli signing a multi-year deal, starting in June.

It’s understood that Fornaroli, 31, will become a marquee player for Glory next season.

Sydney FC and Adelaide United were also interested, but the Uruguayan’s preference was Glory.

Fornaroli has continued training with City since he was sensationally banished by coach Warren Joyce in late October, scoring a goal in what will be his last City appearance.

City’s record goalscorer has told club officials that he is happy to sit out the rest of the season and join Glory once his contract expires on May 31.

It leaves City in a bind, with the deal to sign Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren on the verge of collapse, with his Scottish club Hibernian now looking unlikely to release him.

Hibs had all but agreed to release Maclaren from his season-long loan deal from Germans Darmstadt, but the sudden departure of manager Neil Lennon has seen the club back-pedal.

City were hoping to unveil Maclaren and a visa attacker in the next 24 hours. They were mulling over two visa options, one of whom was West Brom’s Irish winger Wes Hoolahan.

Spotted at Victory training today. TCA suggested yesterday that  Ansell could be heading to Korea to make room for him

Sounds like the K-League team has confirmed it but Victory haven't released the news.

Central Coast player Matt Millar was sent home from training on Thursday after the club discovered the fullback had no interest in renewing his contract with the Mariners, having already signed with their F3 derby rivals Newcastle.

Just two days out from their home clash with Melbourne Victory, Mariners coach Mike Mulvey did not let Millar train with the rest of the squad after learning he had signed with the Jets for next season.

Rough for CCM - that's the kind of player you need to retain to build a decent squad

Also interesting to see they signed two youth players on loan from Sheffield United

"Meanwhile, Central Coast have signed two youth players from Sheffield United on loan for the remainder of the season. Eighteen-year-old English centre-back Sam Graham joins the club after loan spells with Halifax and Oldham Athletic where he played League Two football while Republic of Ireland youth international Stephen Mallon will bolster their attack."

Rumours floating around that the Roar are going to sign Tongyik & Lokoli-Ngoy. Both are free agents, so can be signed after the window closed.

Looks like City's bid to sign Maclaren didn't get completed in time. Not sure what this article means about a FIFA loophole, our window is closed so not sure what the German window has to do with anything.

Jamie Maclaren will not be the only new striker at Melbourne City's Bundoora training ground next week.

The Socceroo could be joined by on-loan Tottenham forward Shayon Harrison, who is expected to join City on a short-term deal pending visa clearance.

That's a real slap in the face for the Mariners. He's about their only bright spark in a horror season and not only does he casually ditch the club that gave him a second chance at the big time but he's poached by former club legend Lawrie McKinna, now at arch rivals the Jets. Bound to cause a sharkstorm of bad feelings inside the club too which has already had more than enough of that.

I know there isn't a lot of loyalty in modern pro football but I think if I was a Salty fan I'd feel pretty disappointed in the guy.

It was clear early that he was up to AL standard, they could have re-signed him before the Jets could talk to him. They for told on the 1st December that the Jets were talking to him but didn't try to open negotiations until the end of January. The club put themselves in this situation.

Well whoever is to blame it again shows what a hopeless mess the club is in at the moment. From what I can see there must have been some discussion with him but what matters is a signature on a piece of paper. Clearly some major miscommunication.

It does surprise me that his agent didn't try and play them off against each other to bump up his wages even more.

Totally agree with RR on this one.

CCM are saying the email the Jets sent to inform them of the contract talks was sent to someone that no longer worked there. CCM fans reported on their boards they saw McKinna talking with Millar at a cafe up the coast in late December, so they might have know before the club did. Complete cluster fudge of a thing.
