Payne being allowed to return to Australia, won't be a given.
2019/20 Part II A New Beginning
I think it will be. He wasn't charged and there was no indication at the time that he'd be refused entry in the future. He will certainly get a final warning and the club will likely need to provide assurances, but other than that I don't see any issues
I wouldn't be so sure, where have you figured out he was not charged? The last info indicated he had a date with the court
never mind any exclusion he faces with Ausi immigration. The nIx have remained so silent on this which indicates there is a lot to see here
Not arrested. But has a court date.

He was charged with a drive middle-range PCA and will appear before a Manly Local Court on June 10.

Seems like the package was aimed at professional sports clubs impacted by covid and the Phoenix got a big slice of it for a club which I'm quite surprsed. I guess they assessed it based on need more than anything else as each of the 5 rugby franchises would get around $250,000 for the NZR allocation of $1.25 and Warriors at $200,000. There's still no word on how they came to that decision.

Phoenix were the only team that was impacted mid season so couldn't prepare for it I guess. There's also the fact that they went to quarantine in Australia and then came back which can't have been cheap.
I wouldn't be surprised if NZ rugby comes out okay, they'll have lower operating costs because they won't be traveling all over the world and they may have a surge in crowds, with a population that's been locked up for a couple of months starved of things to do.

Yeah I think Super Rugby Aotearoa crowds are gonna be big. Even I'm thinking of going to a Hurricanes game or two, and the last time I went to one they still played at Athletic Park.
Size of Phoenix support package seems roughly equivalent to what they missed out on from the last Fox Sports payment (which was made to the FFA but hasn't yet been passed on). Probably sliced/diced a bit to account for the wage subsidy and for them expecting to get something from the Fox money eventually.
Don't think having crowds at Super Rugby Aotearoa will improve NZ Rugby's bottom line much in 2020.
Plus once the novelty dies off of actual live sport after 1-2 weeks, and faced with either a nice warm pub/lounge room, or sitting in the biting mid winter cold.......
Still early kick off times will help.
The big money comes in from brand All Blacks, and unless they can lock them in for 8-10 games this year (which is possible), it will be a huge financial loss year.

Just Need Fox to step up to the spot and concede the PEN
Or is it - Accept the PEN
Amazed by that payout - a dam good case must have been presented
Assuming that hooper and Davila make it back and assuming they have remained fit, geez we have a good shake at winning this comp. I can't imagine every other squad keeping all their players when we resume and if some haven't been paid for a while they can't be that motivated

Last thugby game I went to Inga the Winger scored a try right in front of me. I think it may have been his last before the switch to League. Bledisloe Cup at Carisbrook if I recall correctly.

Superb to see the nix getting a good slice. Have to say when I saw it on the news yesterday, I couldn't believe the unionists weren't complaining about the figure. Oh well :D
Really hope things get agreed soon and we can see if this team can produce what they've shown earlier in the season.
ROAR PUSHING AHEAD TO GET QUEENSLAND HUB
The chances of the Roar's proposal succeeding appear slim however, with Johnson reiterating the FFA's focus was on NSW hosting the hub.
"There's more certainty with border movement and with more venues available here. We don't have a lot of time," Johnson told SEN radio on Wednesday.
Johnson added the release of exact dates for the league's resumption and when clubs can return to training would be released soon but depended on the outcome of the talks with Fox.
All quiet on the FFA / Fox front.
Must be hard to make plans for the likes of Davilla and Hopper.

Yeh extremely difficult for all concerned
NRL might be allowed limited crowds from next weekend. By the time the A-League kicks off, we might be able to have crowds. I doubt that would change the hub plans, as that is to reduce travel so they can pack the games in thick and fast.

Well yeah, not sure if your from Wolves or a kiwi but going to matches here in the UK and Ireland the atmosphere pisses all over the boring kiwi rugby atmosphere, even in Hamilton and Dunedin (when uni is on). Wales being the best I've expereiced.

People like the Rugby because you can drink.
Six Nations rugby games are great because you get 20,000 Welshmen/women travelling to Dublin, same number of English to Edinburgh, Scots to Paris etc etc. You also have hundreds of years of history, to create an edge. Listen to the lyrics of 'Flower of Scotland' and you soon realise they don't care much for their southern big brother neighbours!
In a nutshell you get thousands of passionate travelling fans, filling out the pubs pre game, and creating a great atmosphere inside the stadiums.
European club rugby is just a smaller microcosm of that, and like with football it's played in purpose built rectangular grounds - just small ones like Welford Road in Leicester, Bath Rec in Bath etc. You can almost reach out and touch the players.
The live rugby experience in NZ can be dross in comparison. A tell tale sign is a Mexican wave before HT, to keep the punters interested. Though yeah the on field quality is high.

You can't buy beer at all at the football
Is anyone else disturbed by the news that the reason the State gave the Nix almost $1 million is that we would have apparently ceased to exist without it?! Doesn't give me faith in the club's long-term future

It's hardly shocking though, is it? We've talked about how Fox money keeps this league going for years now, and without it the league isn't really viable (unless someone else were to step in and pay above-market price for the TV rights). It's not just Nix that are treading water, so are the other clubs, and the league itself. It's not for nothing that the FFA kowtowed to every Fox demand over the last few years.
The other thing to keep in mind on this is that the Nix has continued to pay the player's wages through the Covid lockdown, quite a few of the Aussie clubs didn't, so that's probably what makes the Nix's position a bit more precarious right now.
There was a rumor awhile back that the Nix were stumping up a bit of money as a key tenant for the NZCIS in Upper Hutt, if that's the case then they may have been in a bit of a precarious financial position and the clubs owners might not have cash to pump into the team because they're propping up multiple struggling businesses. Investments in new training facilities, the academy, and setting up the women team as well as a pretty expensive squad are going to impact cashflow.
Dome was pretty honest on the pod a few weeks ago saying that they'd struggle to meet this months payroll. As El says, only a few teams still paid their squads through the break so the financial situation of most are just as precarious.
It's no secret.
From day 1 the club has had to be topped up by the Owners each month to balance the books.
havn't they also lost there main sponsor for next season?

The league lost Hyundai, I haven't heard anything about the nix and Huawei, although I wouldn't be surprised if Huawei bailed, they can't be selling too many phones right now with the google restrictions. I guess the only saving grace is the overlap between Hauwei, Welnix, Infratil, and Vodafone.
The FFA/A-League did not lose Hyundai. Hyundai decided not renew Title sponsorship deal at its end.
