yeah nah, lot of kiwis seem to take value away from our own players
Hoop the (ex) Hoop
Just love how people on the YF forums seem to no the exact reasons why players come to us and why they choose to stay.So good to no people have access to that sort of inside information and they keep us informed.
The other benefit of the salary cap is to (try and stop) teams from gambling by taking on a lot of debt to try and win the league and hope the returns from that make it worth while.
See: Many incarnations of NZ Club National Leagues.
I don't think we should overdramatise our wage bill
Of the two premiership players mentioned
1: One wasplaying in league one (and a quick google search indicates wages in that league are not high)
2: The second was released from a championship club and if he didn't come here was heading to the league below
The club's wage bill this season is right up there with its largest wage bill (2016-17).
Why are those two off the payroll?
They're on Academy deals, aren't they?
Not as far as I'm aware.
Is it a case of protecting the players.
If you play pro for examples you can not get in to the states college system... so by never signing a contract, they have officially never played a pro game because they have not being paid to play?
Would that get them around the college rule??
at this rate, anyone would be mental holding out for a US college scholarship. That country is going to the dogs if it isn’t there already. Would be far better to stick it out here for a few years imo
If he actually had an offer from a championship club I dont think he would be here do you?
That would actually apply to any of our players
A-League is perfect for a guy like Hooper. One game a week rather than two and a long off-season - only issue is the hard grounds. Was the same as Ifill, he struggled with injury before coming to the A-League

I had to look again at first as I didn't recognise him. Certainly looked a lot leaner.

I'm worried he is sick
If you google image search him playing for previous clubs, he always looked a bit chunky. Never stopped his goalscoring.
This is interesting from his Wikipedia page - One criticism that Steve Claridge had when analysing Hooper's game was that "He often played at either breakneck speed when involved in play or at walking pace when not".
Must just be his style and not a sign of not being match fit.
Thats an interesting comment about him playing at a walking pace.
I dont think I would have ever characterised his play by being uninvolved, slow or pedestrian. Sure he's no David Ball with high energy, but I do feel like Hooper makes an effort to be involved and helping out.
Possibly a sign that he was willing to fight at the nix to get back to where he was and have some good final years of his career

It's what happens if you lockdown without beer and baking.
Davila always looked slim, but Hoops looks positively emaciated compared to how he looked when the season started
