Talay asked for more money and the club said no, that wouldn't happen at Melbourne Victory.

asked for more money, club said no, he's still here.....Melbourne might through more money at him now, but I'd like to think the club would offer more if he was to consider extending.

Victory would be more ruthless regarding their expected KPIs and outcomes.  Us, we'd be happy with the top four year in year out and give him the gig for life.

Judging by today's STUFF article, Ufuk's going to be out the door pretty soon if the players don't pull finger. I'm getting flashbacks to the way in which Ernie Merrick left.

I'm not sure I read anything in there that suggests he or the club are looking at the exit door right now.

Once Talay fixes our backline his future here is safe as long as he wants it.   I think getting Sail between the sticks was the first step in the right direction. Our season will likely depend on how our central defence pair develops.

I'm still very concerned about of defensive depth. Not sure a McGing / Payne pairing is the long term answer.

I'm really nervous about next weekend and how they will go against the Glory attack. Castro, Fornaroli and co.

Every club has a budget. All he said, when asked if he would have preferred to hire a more experienced centre back, is that he has a budget. No one in this league has an unlimited budget, and if you look at the sort of players the Phoenix have - especially Davilla and Hemed, you can't really say that it's a cheap squad.

I just don't understand. Think the ugly win with all kinds of form issues shows exactly why why we need to hang on to Uffie urgently. We need him when we can play at home and generate a bit of hype.

Not really. I think he would be kicking himself if last season's 4th spot was the best he can do.  It would be pretty hard for him to get a high paying gig in Oz with only this, and a mixed bag so far this year, on his CV.   I would like to see him do another year with us next season, whn hopefully we will have a bit more stable situation overall, COVID and all.

very much this. Don’t want to see him go, it would be nice to have a manager for a good few seasons and hopefully when he does leave it’s under circumstances which are under his control (no covid and on the back of a very decent season).

Plz look at WSW, look at Perth and take a look at SFC. Maybe Hemed was overpriced (overrated too) But a club like Melb Victory would not say NO to more spending if needed unlike Wellington.

I do not think it is realistic to expect both - prudent financial management, in a pandemic world, and big spending hoping for results.

Sure, MV may not say "no" to spending more money than us, but that is not a guarantee of a success on field.

Also, one of the reasons the other A-League franchises are OK with us being part of the A-League is because we are financially stable as a business and have not needed a bailout by FFA or by some dodgy private money that brings the club to the brink like the Jets or GCU.

I'm also okay with him staying :)

In the A-League, there's usually a pretty high turnover of both managers and players. Tactics get stagnant quickly. Sydney is probably the only club who's had a succession plan and stuck to it - they haven't really changed tactics majorly  in 4-5 years. They can pull this off because they attract the best players and have the best academy (along with City)

Personally I still think a club like ours suits the more direct game Ernie played in his height. We're trying to play possession football without the midfield to do it.

gotta build the midfield to play the style you want. The standard has been set, Uffie and co want to play possession footy, if the current midfield isnt up to it then next transfer window/season you bring in the players who can.

Once again, we are in the situation we were in 2 years ago with Rudan although Talay is actually into the final months of his contract. Popovic is another contender, but seems like Victory want a coach who can recruit well. It would be sad to see him go but on the other hand, I'm hopeful he stays for a couple of more years.

All coaches do when taking up the Nixs gig is look to where they go next. In fact they cant wait to leave the place. Talay no doubt knew this gig would get him in the door at Victory for better money and living and also better funding when it comes to players unlike Wellington who said no to more money at the start of the season.
Replace him with the Melb City guy that coached the U20 NZ team forget his name.

If Uffie leaves, love the idea of luring Buckingham back. Already has coached at the Phoenix, U23 All Whites and has a good knowledge of the landscape in New Zealand Football.

Does Danny Hay have a UEFA Pro License? Or do you not need a UEFA Pro License to coach in the A-league? Would love to see a Kiwi coach step up for the Nix. It's been a long time with Ricki last being a Kiwi coach for the Nix.

Regardless, I still hope Uffie stays. He has by far been our best coach in recent years.

Buckingham has shown in the past money ain't everything for him, reportedly paying his own way visiting NZ U20 contenders overseas, pre that Poland U20 WC

He also obviously has a soft spot for NZ, and a head coaching gig is always tempting if you are just the assistant elsewhere. The obvious contender if Talay does leave.

That statement is not backed by fact at all.

We had Herbert as head coach for five years, Merick was head coach for three, and Greenacre has been a coach with the team for seven.

The only coach who wanted to leave was Rudan and the only other coach to leave without completing his contract was Kalezic who was pushed.

You're basing your entire opinion on a single coach, ignoring the other six coaches that we've had.

It is still early times. My main concern is that after co-Vid and a full season played overseas with no gate takings, little (you'd think) merchandise sales and virtually no extra sponsorship (read: stadium signs etc), money will be tight and WellNix may not be abe to bolster the squad. They did a good job by bringing in Hemed as a marquee, but let's face it, we aren't in a position to really challenge for the league's top players and this might make Uffie think twice about re-signing.
This being said, the Nix have proven to be a good avenue for (especially Australian) players to rejuvenate their careers (DeVere) or to gain meaningful playing time (Laws, Devlin, Sotirio) as well as attracting some of the best Kiwi talent on offer domestically.
So we may still be able to attract valuable players and assemble a good squad.

Question is, will Uffie feel the same and will he want to give it another crack? A lot of it will also depend on how we finish the season. Last year we finished 3rd but flunked the playoffs. This year we will hopefully sneak into the 6 but will need to do better after that to make Uffie want to stay and other players look at us as a viable option.

Dunno, Hemed has under performed but on paper he should be one of the top strikers in the league. With Taylor, DaVilla, Piscipo, Hemed, you've got four players who are (or should be) the best players in their position. Add in Ball, McGarry, etc. and there's a lot of quality there.

That first XI should be right up there.

Does Ufuk Talay have complete control over player signings? Because if he does then the longer he’s not signed a contract, the greater chance the off contract players won’t be resigned. At the moment players such as Sail (who has Aus citizenship apparently), Devlin, Davila, Marinovic etc all have only a couple months on their contracts, meaning any team can approach them.

I saw Slater’s rumour that Victory are interested in both Davila and Devlin, having been linked to Talay, and it straight away gave me Rudan flashbacks. I’d find it incredibly annoying if these players weren’t resigned, or at least attempted to. I can live with them going overseas but to a different A League team wouldn’t be it. Does anyone at the Phoenix have a Director of Football role? How much scope would someone like Shaun Gill have to resign players or is it just the manager’s discretion?

Look, I think if we all just accept that when the Nix has any success, the players/coach responsible will be inevitably poached by a Sydney, Melbourne or overseas side, we won't be getting our hopes dashed.

that's all very well and good, Melbourne and Sydney sides have had the FFA in their back pocket for a decade or more. Now that the FFA has less financial influence in the A-league I'd like to think that the Nix can foot it with the so called bigger clubs.
