That is a terribly weak looking midfield

Butler is simply not good enough and how he has made it is beyond me... how can an average ASB player beat and player playing J1 to the national squad!! JOKE

And has Bertos actually played in any of the NIX friendlies, is he fit or is he that far down Merricks ladder?? Either way, it makes his inclusion that much harder to fathom.

The midfield is the worry, although McGlinchey will be in there for the playoff. Really hope we don't end up playing someone like Killen or Dura in midfield.

But excited to see Chris James in there. Very talented player. Hopefully has a Smeltz-vs-Wales-esque couple of matches and can win a spot in the squad for the playoffs.

No McGlinchey, Rojas or Hogg? I'm starting to get worried Ricki wont have a solid team ready before the play off :( It will be interesting what formation he picks. Im guessing standard 3-4-3

Better to win playing dirty than not win.

I think it is better that we play attractive football - that will bring in the casual supporter.

better football generally means better results, but we are still some way behind the world's best so there are doubts whether we can compete better by trying and failing to play like spain

i'd like to see us placing an emphasis on creating our own style - direct, fast and on the deck, like holland

Please let there be a radio sport interview or similar with Herbert regarding this team selection.

I want to hear an answer to "Ricki, how do you explain the non selection of professionals Henderson and Fitzgerald. Two players playing at a decent level overseas particularly Fitzgerald who is starting in the J1 and has experience as a DM a problem area yo yourself have identified."

Additionally, how to you justify the exclusion of Henderson when in previous selected All White squads

he was selected when still injured (for a year) and yet to play a game professionally. However, now fit, playing and scoring is considered not good enough.

And finally... have you actually ever seen Butler play in person??

i'm surprised henderson is not there.  he plays on either flank and scored goals - ideal for a front 3

kris bright must be in some form

as for fitzgerald, i thought he was a centre back or right back at a stretch?

Obviously don't expect an answer but atleast I feel better.

Played DM last year in J2 but has slotted into CB this year in J1.

I know someone mentioned that Kris bright was tapped in his thread but I am extremely surprised (pleasantly) to see Chris James back there. I really thought it would be a cold day in hell before he was back in the fold. Him and Ricki must have met and smoothed the waters. Good on him as I thought he was quality. Bright has his chance, let's see what he can do.

Chris James always played a good short passing game. Not our typical All Whites style. Would suit Rojas playing style shame he is out. first time i saw Chris James play live was New zealand friendly vs charlton athletic. It took me half a game to figure out who this blonde kid was making short neat passes and then moving instead of just hoofing the ball long. second live game was vs Wales and he played out of his skin. both resulted in draws and he was the standout for me in both. even considering smeltz' double against wales.

needless to say i am glad he is getting another chance. but i will be keeping my expectations in check this time.

Like the pick of Bertos over Fenton as right back/wing back...one upmanship.  Brockie should start ahead of Killen.

Right on about Henderson - has played 30 games for Mjallby in Sweden's top league since he returned from injury in early August last year (has played 18 of Mjallby's 21 league games so far this year).
- and that's a much better league than the Finnish one Bright and James are playing in.
AND NO, BRIGHT ISN'T EVEN IN GOOD FORM !!!  He's fallen from favour at Mariehamn (one of the smaller clubs in the Finnish league, on an isolated island, only turned pro in 2009) and has been reduced to three substitute appearances in their last five games. His goal-scoring form hasn't been tremendous either (8 goals in 20 games so far this season) - in a league poorer than the A-League (ranked 33rd league in Europe).

heck, any idea why he's been chosen?

i read that his dad, former all white dave, has been keeping in touch with brian turner.

if that's all it takes, maybe we should all ring ricki and do our best to give an honest appraisal of our sons

I actually got an email back from De Jong regarding selections. Albeit brief, I must say I am impressed he took the time.

Reply is below

Gareth

Thanks for taking the time to email. As with all international teams at NZ Football, final say on selection rests with the coach.

I have forwarded your comments through to Ricki Herbert for his attention.

Cheers

Fred

Confirmed unfortunately -

This guy is jinxed when it comes to the All Whites - has been injury-free the last year, making 30 appearances for Mjallby (12 end of last season, 18 so far this season) and been in good form recently, scoring a few goals from midfield.

And now he gets injured when quite likely to be called up - confirmed on Mjallby official website in review of last weekend's match:

http://www.maif.se/

(After going there, click on  news article "IF BROMMAPOJKARNA - MJALLBY AIF 2-0 (1-0) 2013-08-26  and then use Google translate - won't translate properly otherwise)

"After 30 minutes, becomes Henderson had to leave the pitch due to a hypo, Anton Dahlström replaces."

Let's hope it's not a major injury and he's available for the next All Whites friendlies in October.
