No confirmation at all of tournament schedule, and supposedly to start in only 2 weeks, on 1st June.

On Soccerway website, none of the 4 nations, have any tourney matches noted - though India at least has games listed for September re another tournament involved with.

Also NZF mentioned they hoped to announce a preliminary AWs squad last week - but nothing.

Of course hope is all still happening, but starting to wonder.............

Out of curiosity, where did you see NZF mention that?

Not too sure if I want to make a new thread so I'll chuck it here, but instead of relying on friendly tournaments like this and trips to the Lawson Tama for our international games, why don't we ask to join the AFC Asian Cup? We see this done in South America, where CONCACAF teams like Mexico and USA are granted entry to the Copa America, and often a wildcard like Japan is brought in. There might be a little bit of difference since Copa America doesn't require qualifying but the Asian cup does. (Side note, Mexican teams are also let in to the Copa Libertadores, so surely the Phoenix can get in to the AFC Champions League if we ask nicely enough?)

Mexican teams no longer take part in the Copa Libertadores. Anyway, I would love to see the AW playing the AFC Asian Cup, I just don't see it happening

Pretty sure it was contained within a story, which announced Kenya as 4th team for the tourney.

Either a Stuff article or NZF release. Anyway can find neither now (in fact can find no NZ story at all on Kenya being named the 4th team which is odd) - so think was a NZF release now withdrawn from their website. That's my speculation.

Players training with Schmid at QBE - from Andrew Voerman

Got u23 vibes and also most of them based in nz or aus. Few more players to come probably the ones based overseas. Might also be starting to prepare for olympics and giving younger players a chance to prove themself. imo smart move by schmidt especially with a whole 4 years still to go so improving ranking isn't crucial if we can set up a strong qualification for Qatar.

I stuffed up here, the numbered list I was given seemed to go GKs, DFs, MFs, FWs, and I didn't catch that Dyer was out of place in the FWs, and then I'd already tweeted it and people had retweeted so didn't want to delete.

Still five more players to go I think, hope he might be among them.

All in all though I'm disappointed. That's an extremely poor team. Thought we might be a little more ambitious considering we're finally in a tournament (even if it is a friendly one), we can do better than playing completely untested youth (Hudson v2). Surely players like Kosta, Roux, etc. could help out

Dyer? Really?

Cam Brown's a strange one, overall he's fourth choice at Auckland City and there are multiple goalkeepers in the national league I'd take instead. If it's for the experience then I can't hate on it though. Glad to see Te Atawhai in the reckoning again

A very young side - not unhappy with the thinking if looking ahead to Tokyo.

I hope McCowett hasn't been picked as he's looking to trial somewhere perhaps at the same time or something similar.

To be fair to Dyer, he is one of the better players at the NZ domestic level. Would like to see young Nikko Boxall given a run in the squad as well.

I'd definitely understand if they were young enough to go to Tokyo but only six would qualify (Brown, Cacace, Ingham, Singh, Dyer, Rogerson). And damn where'd you hear about the trial? That's awesome, good luck to him even though I'd love for him to stay in the Handy a while longer or at least go to the Nix

er, mrsmiis  I think you’re misreading metal legs post.

He’s HOPING the reason he isn’t selected is because he’s unavailable/trialing. Played for Wests last weekend though.

With the right 5 visa players, plus the likes of Doyle and Dura, this team could go alright in the A-League

Looking at Andrew Voerman's twitter, he is saying that is unlikely all these 18 in training squad will go to India, ie more than 5 others will be added in to make up the 23.

https://twitter.com/andrewvoerman/status/998765880...

Next A League season doesn't start until October 19th (just under 5 months away) - so you would think all the A League guys not in Auckland now, could go to India. Doyle, Roux, Barba & Wee Mac(?).  Though Voerman thinks Kosta will be having a break. Wee Mac could be trialling somewhere.

Rojas & Brockie like Lewis have had light playing loads overseas recently - so may put their hands up. Though for Brockie not that long until his South African commitments (CAF Champions League) restart in mid July.

Others that were in Spain and could come in - Nikko Boxall (Danish season only finished a few days ago), Niko Kirwan (Italian season still going?), Lewis, Tzanev, Woud, Bevan.

Others not in Spain like Kyle Adams (age 21, 1996 born), Musa (like Adams in USL), De Vries (eligible?) and Appiah must go close. As with the MLS guys their club commitments may take priority. Not a problem for Appiah, as Korean season now on a break until July.

Tyler Boyd?

I also think Michael Den Heijer (age 22, 1996 born) is worth a look. Training day to day in a Dutch club pro environment, that will be above anything in the Handy Prem.

Apparently you need to be born 1997 or younger to qualify for U23's and Tokoyo Olympic campaign.

Anyway expect 7-10 additions to Auckland training squad, for India. So 2-5 of the guys in Auckland to drop out.

Is important this AWs 'B' does perform well in India. I think is proposed this will become an annual tournament, so if it's cheap be great to be invited back next year. A close mimic to 2020 ONC Nations Cup.

Im pretty sure McGlinchey will be missing out on the tour. Rumours are there might be a shock callup for a U20 player that went to last years World Cup. But wouldn't be surprised if that 'shock' is just Mcowatt. Cam Brown being in the training squad is a bit of a shock considering he is no where near Zubikarai at Auckland City and firmly down the pecking order. I know this a bit of a silly statement but I would like to see Kris Bright back in the All Whites maybe for this tourney as he is playing well when he gets the chance at Auckland City. Woud should take one of the keeper spots but there is a tight tussle maybe for the third GK spot between Tzanev and Brown. I would pick Tzanev just because he has more experience but could be tight even though they probably wont get much game time.

According to Michael Burgess the 20 s player is Noah Billingsley. That is a surprise to me as he looked awkward and lacking skill, and his partner that campaign Stu Haulthauzen looked the goods, and has done well in the us system.

going on what Piney said in the herald the "shock" call up would probably be Cacace and\or Noah Billingsley

From Piney on twitter:

Stand by for the most inexperienced All Whites side ever to be named at 10am. Ten of 23 uncapped, including all three 'keepers, first callup for Liberato Cacace and Noah Billingsley. Only 3 players in double figures (caps), only 3 international goals combined.

Average age of the All Whites squad to be named at 10am is 21.56 years. Four teenagers - Woud, Cacace, D. Ingham and Singh and just three players over 25 - N. Boxall, Doyle, Gulley.

Standby players for All Whites' tournament in India ... Cameron Brown, Niko Kirwan, Callum McCowatt, James McGarry, Jake Porter, Owen Parker-Price, Monty Patterson, Logan Rogerson and Jack-Henry Sinclair.

He confirmed on twitter that Andre de Jong is also in the squad

Musa and Kyle Adams (not sure if is on the radar), are like the MLS guys, playing in the US at the moment (USL level).

No Appiah. Be interesting to know if just not rated good enough, or not available for NZ? Korean season now on a break.

Perhaps a journo can ask Schmid.

Not better than the so often maligned M Dyer?

Meh. Finding it quite hard to get excited by this squad. Good to see Libby and Gulley rewarded.

First impression - not many strikers there, but a lot of midfielders?

Second impression - "Henry Cameron? Is he still a thing?"

Third impression -  that's a lot of staff to be taking

And now? My Marcel Marceau impression......

I'm concerned Dyer is going to become the modern version of Brad Scott... given caps despite not being up to it - and then when front liners are missing, is called up on the basis he has international experience...

Permalink Permalink

Brad Scott was called up for reasons other than his football ability Milts. But I think you might know that....

Billingsley is hopeless - how he continues to get chance in the NZ set up is beyond me... at age group or any other level.  Off the top of my head I would rather see...

Max Mata, Joel Stevens, Callum McCowett, A Brick.

Having watched Moses at close quarters this winter season - in a dev/olywhites squad he deserves to be there. He's a quality midfielder for a 21 year old.

He's also calmed down a bit following that rash of red cards he caught earlier this year.
