Reid, Smith, Dura, Boxall...
If Fitzgerald is "turning Japanese/I really think so" and Hudson's discovery channel fails to unearth anyone, we're looking at a) converting a DM or fullback (not flush with choice there); b) Aussie state leagues (M.Eagar, Musa); c) ASB (?); d) NZ U20's.
That it?

Read that as CB options. RB = Graham

Except only two of them have shown international quality to date. And one of those is taking 12 months off.

The reality is Sigmund wasn't starting nor getting on the field. Yes that means we lose some depth, but he wasn't going to be at the next world cup by his own admission.

Dura won't be at next World Cup either. Discussion is totally about depth.

Browns a LB and 2ndBest Smith and Fitzgerald will be there come oceania/wcq

In my opinion the days of wing/full backs being able to fill in at CB are gone. Different skill set and mentality. So I would take any fullbacks out of the equation.

Adam Mitchell. Bazeley played him the full 90 of all four games in Doha. See how well he performs in Under-20's next year. Then maybe...

There are many, many examples at top clubs of this happening...

(See: Chambers at Arsenal)

Obviously a bit harder to find that quality of player in NZ , though.

Chiellini is one of the best CBs in the world, I'm pretty sure he started out as a LB. But yeah, we don't have a lot of quality FBs either. Maybe we can convert Fenton to CB?

Well Fitzgerald wasn't there last time. unless he gets a gig in Europe, not convinced we will every see him play for the AWs again.

I don't think 2ndBest is even close to being an international quality centre back.

A few young names being banded about.  Do people remember the early/mid naughties when Steven was being talked up as a future AW captain.  I've seen that happen to a number of other young players too more recently.

A while ago I made a comment here that depth in defense was depleting, I don't as yet see that dwindling depth plateauing and increasing again anytime soon.

Its a big drop from Smith/Reid (1st string) → Durante/Fitzgerald/Boxall/Raux/Lochhead (2nd string) → the rest (Musa/Eager/Doyle/Tuiloma etc).

Something I find interesting is that players like Eager, Doyle, Roux have performed well each time they have been asked to step up a level. How do we know that they wouldn't do it again?

I hope he picks up a contract at in an Aussie A-League team and steps up just as "Seamonster" did 6ish years ago.

Wasn't Dan Keat playing as a centre back for the Galaxy? I know he's playing more as a DM in Sweden but might be worth a look.

Steven Old is having a good year in the Sewdish 2nd division. undefeated in 20+ games, getting promoted, plus he's scored 4 goals.

Late bloomer perhaps, but as I mentioned in his thread, if he starts playing in the Swedish top division next year, he surely must get a look back in.

He'd definantly deserve a look in, particularly with the current evident lack of depth
