So Ifill has basicallly called Hudson out there right?

You have to be really careful. Some guys are great 'presentation' coaches ... and it all looks good on a PowerPoint.

"But then actually getting from there to the grass, and creating an environment where players can learn and develop and understand systems, and dealing with the dressing room, that's completely different."

Pretty sure hudson was fairly active on the training pitch. Just don't know if his tactics from either the power point or the field were right.

That's exactly what I thought when I read the article.

Big fan of Nelsen, and it's a shame he now has no involvement with NZ Football (not even for any pep talk v Peru) - but he's made it pretty plain his life and business interests lie stateside. Aka Brown, Elliott & Lochead

what part of the sentence doesn't make sense ? Do you need it to explaibed to you ?

By all means have your opinion, but in a forum, be prepared to back up your opinion or have it questioned.

It would be rather boring if opinions were not discussed.

that's probably cause when he was tearing it up in european competition, english clubs were banned so there was not much coverage

can assure you though plenty of older fans in the UK are aware of him

With England having only won the WC once, it’s pretty clear football exists outside the UK.

Rufer Ocenia player of 20th century is no 1 NZ footballer of all time. Nelsen a worthy no 2.

Ask any German football fan of a certain age and they will certainly have heard of Wynton. Know that myself from travelling through Europe in late 1990’s

But Im sure you can name the greatest Accrington Stanley eleven of all time

He was top goal scorer in the UCL in '94 - English clubs were back in Europe by then.

Edit: As a young kid growing up in South Africa buying Shoot and Match magazines, I knew of Rufer due Werder Bremen's UEFA cup win.

What a load of Bollocks that is. Rufer well known if you followed football and not just your pub team.

I take it you've only known Borussia Dortmund for the last 10 years as well.

Maybe never heard of Held or Emmerich but maybe Tikowski. All Stars of that club and Germany. Point is it doesn't make a player any less of a star on the euro or world stage because someone has no knowledge of them.

First things first I never said he wasnt a good player that just I had never heard of him until I came here!

Secondly you can ask anyone in the UK that follows football and I bet 99% will never have heard of him again, thats not to say he wasnt a good player!

But lets get one thing straight there is no way you can say Rufer was a star on the world stage. I dont know about watching pub football I think you have spent to mush time in the pub!!

Its perfectly understandable that a non NZ'er hadn't heard of Rufer. Like "Accrington Stanley, who are they" ;-) I hadn't heard of Rufer until I moved to NZ (& yes, eventhough he was obviously a good player!). Of course some Germans will know him - he played in their league.

When it was more "unusual" for players to play "overseas" back in the 80's/90's people likely took more interest in their own countrymen rather than the team as a whole. ....wether Rufer at Werder Bremen, Rush at Juventus, Keegan at Hamburg, Lineker at Barca etc. It doesnt mean they'll know, recognize or remember everyone else in the team from that time. - especially without the internet or TV coverage like today.

I'm sure there will be football fans outside of the Netherlands who haven't heard much of Ryan Thomas (yet). Doesn't mean they are any less of a football fan if their focus & knowledge is on their own domestic league.  Most Kiwi fans had probably never heard of PEC Zwolle before Thomas joined & are still unlikely to be able name the rest of the starting 11 eventhough they take a close interest in Thomas.

I'm sure there are many World Class players around the world (now & previously) that I haven't heard of.. If I can remember an individual like Boniek or Stoichkov should I also be able to name the rest of the starting 11 who were also very good International players?

Read what is written sunshine. I never mentioned anything about Rufer being a world star, just the fact he was known by people in the UK and Italy [he was on Milans wanted list but wouldn't move from Germany] but fine not by you.

Maybe you didn't have a local [UK} football paper /Echo worth reading other than The Scum available in your neck of the woods.

How about watching European Cup & CupWCup finals etc on TV in the UK they've been on since the days of Puskas & Gento etc

Rufer scored in the 1992 Final v Monaco shown on TV live in the UK so you can't think you know too much about the history other than the EPL.

Yes I mentioned the 3 German players as stars of that country but again had you ever heard of them? Remember 1966 if you English. Won't make them any less of a star if you haven't.

That are there to show what happens with time.

probably an age thing as well. most fans I met around my age (ie old enough to remember the 82 world cup) could name Rufer as the only Kiwi player they knew off - exceptions were Wolves fans who knew Ricki Herbert and Oxford United fans who knew Ceri Evans because they played for those clubs

Rufer signed for Norwich (who were 1st div at the time) but he couldn't get a work permit so went to Switzerland instead

He was also linked with Liverpool towards the end of his time at Werder Bremen

But the fact he maybe unknown in the UK, means squat when debating if he is NZ’s best ever player. Having lived in the UK, I found the majority of football fans there knew very very little of what was happening elsewhere in Europe or around the football world.  Very insular. Though of course they would follow their sharkhouse Div 4 team with a passion.

Hi all

I am in the UK and no-one in my office in Belfast (and there are some serious football fans) know Winton Rufer so far that I have spoken to. Rufer was in the days before social media and internet forums and so less awareness than there would be now one Liverpool fan here told me about international players in Europe or elsewhere. So it is no slight on Rufer just the way of the world back then.

Just because he’s not widely known in the UK, doesn’t mean he isn’t our best ever player.

This discussion has nothing to do with the All Whites coach anyway. So if it can be continued in a more relevant or new thread, that’d be great.
