From the Morning Star, paper of the Communist Party of Britain.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the Kiwis could shock Slovakia or Paraguay. Yet the likelihood is that South Africa 2010 is going to be more important for New Zealand in terms of boosting the sport's popularity back home where the game played with the egg-shaped ball dominates the media.

The All-Whites may have to follow Australia's example in joining the Asian Football Confederation if the huge strides needed to compete at the highest level are going to be taken. The minnows of Oceania are simply not a suitable yardstick when it comes to measuring progress, even if Australia's decision to leave the region has ensured that New Zealand have an excellent chance to qualify for future World Cups.

Disappointing. I expected some references to working together for the common good, or something.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

I think North Korea will be in tomorrow's issue. Interesting that the Morning Star is covering the World Cup - many British lefties disapprove on football because it promotes nationalism and other right-wing ideologies, and to the extent that they notice the World Cup at all, cheer for "anyone except England".

Maybe I'm more communist than I thought.

Then they're heading for a serious trauma of conscience and editorial meltdown when the Poms play the good ol' US of A.

I wonder what they have said in 1966 when the USSR was playing in England??

It's funny how football changes/spins politics upside down. Like Argentina anti-government protesters have to behave for 21 days while the World Cup was going on in 1978 or be heavily handed by the corrupt government of its day. Or civil wars are stopped so countries can see Pele play football.

Here we go:

[quote]Football, at the frosty heights of the Cold War, had shown the North Korean footballers to be human as well as communists. So much so that over 3,000 English fans crossed the Pennines from their Middlesbrough base to Goodison Park for their final-eight game.

So, what to expect this year, 44 years on, as the North Koreans prepare for their second finals?

Well, a repeat of the lofty heights of 1966 seems unlikely, but, just like the secretive Stalinist state's political workings, there's very little information out there to properly judge.

Even qualification for the finals was summed up on the state media's website in just three brief paragraphs.

So, concentrating on what we do know and dismissing some of the more outlandish tales that are currently doing the rounds, we can expect a defensively solid and hard-working side.

I don't think the Morning Star/CPB are huge fans of the DPRK. Kind of, "that's the sort of crap that gives communism a bad name". Cuba's more their speed.

Mmmm, it seems that they were communist but became more socialist and labour for the working class. Hence the sob on the soviet type communism.

Anyway, why are you checking out the paper online?? Some university paper homework or something??

I don't have to answer that question, Senator McCarthy.
