Let's start discussing who we might have and have not in our run up to the next WC:

Paston - perhaps, especially if he gets a big overseas contract and continues playing at a high level.

Moss - probably.

Reid - yes but more likely in the midfield [remember he wasn't a full back before playing with us].

Smith - again probably in his preferred position in midfield.

Nelsen - don't know, will depend on his desire I think. While Elliott had spent a lot of time on the sidelines and had that motivation to carry on playing, Ryan may not have that same passion/driver. hope he is still around and available.

Vilicech - retired

Elliott - retired

Killen/Fallon - perhaps getting too old by then. This year is make or break for them professionally and if they are languishing in non-league football I can't see them being wanted by the AWs.

Smeltz - again depend son what level he plays at over the next 3 or so years.

Woods - yes

Bertos - I think we'll find someone better than he.

Brown - yes but we need someone better.

Lochhead - we need someone better

Clapham - yes if he pushes on to a higher level.

Brockie - maybe, I also think he needs to either star in the A league of be at a bigger club.

Others in the current squad - I don't think so.

Up and comers - others will know more than I.

Coach Herbert - depends on where is club coaching career takes him. I think 10 years as head coach is too long though....

Reid and Smith both play centre-back for their clubs...

...and the Championship is hardly non-league football.

That's a very good overview, NP.
I would just say a couple of things:

Paston will be 37. I know that keeper blossom in their mid-30's but not sure 37 will be a good age to take him to the world cup.

Clapham really needs to be playing at high level (A-League minimum). I still haven't seen him play to date, so don't really know what he's like.

Killen/Fallon: I doubt they will be languishing in non-league football, but yeah, 4 years is a long way away and who knows where they'll be then.

I'd put Leo/Lochead/Brown as YES, as even if we find 2-3 "better" players, they would still be a good back-up option.

Smeltz: Yes.

Also, McGlinchey.

And as for "new blood", apart of course from young kiwi's, I wonder how many people who COULD represent NZ would now put their hand up, after seeing the Smith/Fallon/Reid/WeeMac's fairy tale.

Most of the 2010 squad could still be around in four years time...but I am looking forward to seeing players who are not in the reckoning now become relevant by 2014...e.g. do some of those U17 players make the step up? Do Kiwis (a la Reid/Smith) come out? Does Clapham show he can play at a high(er) level?

So many questions to answer.

This thread is a waste of time.

If you want to know the All Whites squad for 2014 just ask Wynton Rufer to send you this year's WYNERS enrolments.

Dont forget Daniel. He will be eligible and has expressed his interest, with backing from Ricki

I was talking more of 3 years from now not currently. My point being they need to be at a high level rather than playing non-league which might be where 1 or both might be heading slowly.

And Fallon is no longer championship is he?

Forgot about Siggy, but the purpose of the post was to evoke comment not for people to be picky.

The only ones young enough to play at WC level would be Moss, Brockie,Reid Smith and Woods.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Clapham, Boyens.

Unless some miracle occurs I can't see anyway that the likes of Brown, Lochhead, Bertos, Killen and Fallon aren't in the frame.

Costa and Rojas were two I was thinking of. I know it's a huge challenge for them but hopefully they might step up to a higher level. The WC showed that for all our strengths NZ still lags behind in terms of fast, skillful players who can take on defences. We need this dimension to our game. Such player don't grow on trees unfortunately.

McGlinchey has a ton of promise. He is still very young and I'm sure will get better and better. In the A League he has shown the potential to be a real playmaker.

I think Leo has a big part to play in future years. He has made a decent fist of a very difficult job but I think we will see a much better, more confident Leo once he's back playing the attacking midfield role he's used to playing.

And Sigmund may lack the quality of Nelsen but he has all his mental and physical toughness. He surely has a role in the central defence in coming years.

Paston will be 37. I know that keeper blossom in their mid-30's but not sure 37 will be a good age to take him to the world cup.

Schwarzer was 37 at this World Cup and Van Der Sar has still been doing the job at the highest level for Man United and he's pushing 40.

And Shilton was 40 going on 41 at the 1990 World Cup.

I'll be 35 in 2014 (if I somehow manage to live that long), so feel like I'll be in with a chance now.

Rowe sounds like an interesting prospect to be sure... Would be great to have someone able to challenge Lochhead for a starting spot.

was just checking the Birmingham City page on wikipedia, and by the looks of it Luke Rowe has either a brother or a namesake in the same team. I wonder if he would qualify to represent NZ as well?

Rowe is a pretty common name in NZ footie... he would be following in the tradition of others.  I would like to see Luke invovled with the U20's just to make sure he's as good as people (Herbert) say he is.  We have to remember that Herbert has found some duds in his time at both the Nix and Aws.

As an aside, hopefully Chris Jame's will have sorted out his mentality and will have found himself a club playing at A-League level at least (Chapionship above would be better).

Luke Rowe seems very promising- in that he's an 18 year-old whose  already graduated from Birmingham's Youth Team to the Reserve team.
Video of him here for Birmingham Reserves v Chelsea Reserves last season:

News item on him signing one year pro deal in March on Birmingham City website:

Below is Birmingham Chairperson Karen Brady in her regular "Sun" newspaper blog: talks of  her Academy which Rowe has been playing in along with the reserves more recently. There was a Jacob Rowe who featured more than Luke in the Academy team and is slightly older- don't know if they're related? Jacob Rowe's just been released after one year on a pro deal.
Birmingham Academy is a strong one: reached FA Youth Cup Semi-final against Liverpool April 2009.
  Tuesday, March 24 2009

I'M extremely proud that our lads have reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals and drawn Liverpool.

The results have been amazing since I appointed Terry Westley as head of the academy three years ago.

If we've produced a top-class player in the last 20 years, I can't remember his name.

Now we have five young internationals and - in Luke Hubbins, Jacob Rowe and Dan Preston - three examples of how the game should be played.

Liverpool want to film the matches for their TV channel and I insist on a gigantic payment - three shirts signed by Steven Gerrard to auction at our end-of-season dinner!

I'm in Australia [Sydney] at the moment and have watched my nephew playing rep football in the Sydney under 14 competition. He's in the 2nd tier, there is one more tier above him and maybe 1 or 2 below. They have this rep football where kids trial for clubs and below that is what they call park football which is like our junior club football. Anyway, my point is that in his team alone there are 2 kids with Kiwi parents that would make them both eligible to play for NZ. The sister-in-law tells me that they've seen another obvious Kiwi boy [he was Maori] playing in the same competition. I think I've mentioned this before but I think we need to get over here and trawl these Australian competitive leagues and identify NZ talent like I've mentioned. I'm prepared to do a Brian Turner and invent a job for myself and invite NZF to employ me to do it......
