only two centre backs - old and boyens (3-4-3 anyone?)

four goalkeepers in the squad - moss, paston, flucher and gosling!  will herbert opt for fulch or gosling if moss gets injured again???

Good to see Killen, Vicelich, Oughton and Elliot on the list. Been a while since those names were on the same sheet, if ever. ..

Surprised Soupy got the call-up ahead of Pearce out of the Waitakere side and I don't know what Webster has done but he's had could reviews in the NSW Premier League.  Good Work Fella to Soupy though.

Still not remotely convinced by Pritchett, and why have we selected three right back options (Oughton, Mully if need be, and Pritchett) ?  Suspect Ivan is your Centre back cover (and Elliott isn't there Phil, he's still injured).

That is a good line up.  I'm looking forward to the game against Wales.

Do you think that the games will be on Sky??

the press release did mention a 20th player being added.  possibly a centre back or someone to cover left back.  ricki's comments didn't sound too encouraging for bunce.

we should play 4-3-1-2

--------------------------Paston---------------------------
James Pritchett, Andrew Boyens, Duncan Oughton,Tony Lochhead
-------Jeremy Christie---Ivan Vicelich--- David Mulligan
-------------------------Leo Bertos-----------------------
---------Jeremy Brockie----------Chris Killen------------------

bench, Moss, James, Brown, Campbell

I think thats the best we can make out of that squad, might he gots some players sides wrong though???

that's a pretty tidy line up and i reckon they will play that formation or something similar.

i wonder if herbert is looking at playing outghton at centre back?  it would provide a bit of zip back there.

killen is unlikely to be relied upon too much, but it would be good if he could feature.  i'd pair james up front with him.

Put Chris James in instead of Brockie.

Comments;
Thought Campbell was worth a recall, he's always been a bit lightweight IMHO but he seems to have toughened up a bit lately.
Oughton's too small for a centre-back, put Vicelich there - he's done bugger all in the midfield for the AWs.
Play James (our great hope) as an attacking central midfielder in behind two up front (Bertos, Killen with Bertos roaming).
Thank Cruyff (I don't believe in the other god) they've finally dumped Boukenooghe. Smeltz still worries me too, I know he worked hard on the SA tour but he can't get a regular start for Halifax fercrissakes. Anyone can work hard, but if he hasn't got the class for the Conference, how on earth has he got it for international football?
And I'd've taken Allan Pearce.

me too. a decent amount of english football league experience (at a level higher than smeltz) and excellent local form would have had him in my team.

So who is the captain? Our former captain Danny is not going due to child birth or something. Making him captain last tour is the reason why Nelson's name is not on the list I'd say.

Vicelich will have to line up as centre back with either Boyens or Old - they're too inexperienced to play together against that sort of opposition.

I think Mully will play in the holding midfield role with Oughton at RB.

I am going to the Wales game. I can't wait. I am a bit weary though. Firstly I hope we get on the scorecard. Always hope to steal a 1-0l victory or squeeze a draw out of Wales. Realistically and based on Nelson, Hay and Elliott missing; who would add steady heads and stability, we are more likely to go down 2 to 3 nil unfortunately. Also the issue of players who haven't had much game time recently is going to be a risk as was in South America.

Still I am glad we are getting some games. It is great for NZ soccer/football.

Players:

Will be great to see Chris James playing again. He is the most promising player we have at the present time. He reminds me of a Owen Hargreaves type player. Its great to have Killen back in the squad. Although he will probably be used as a sub for 15 - 20 mins. Anymore would probably not be beneficial anyway, given him still on the recovery from his injury and not having played since January.

Old needs to step up. I would prefer not to see him in the starting line-up. He tends to hesitate and panic for a split second everynow and then. He needs to concentrate for the full 90 minutes otherwise. He needs to learn off the experienced players around him like Duncan Oughton.

Andy Boyens, should be on form fitness wise, as part of the Toronto FC side have had their pre-season games and are 5 games into their season with Andy only missing one. They just won their last game 3-1, first win of the season after losing the first 4 games.

Toronto are a startup/expansion team new to the MLS this season.

I watched some of the video highlights of Andy. He seems to hold is own in the MLS, just think he needs a bit of that Ryan Nelson drive and 101% attitude and he could be a useful player for NZ.

We haven't got much upfront as per normal. If we had Chris James and a fully fit Killen with a Coveny on the bench as back up would be fine. But Chris James, an 85% killen and a Brockie is a bit different. I am all for getting a Costa Barbarouses as the 20th player. We need a young striker with the world in front of him in the squad. Even just to get him in the All white environment as a subsitute for 10-15 mins to give him some exposure if Herbert thinks it is an option.

We have enough in the area of defence and defensive midfielders. It will be just upto Herbert to shuffle them around, he will know what is going to be the most effective for the team.

I have always liked the flair of Bertos and think maybe Oughton could fit into the midfield instead of Ivan. Let Ivan sit in the back four. He is most effective for NZ their when Nelson and Hay are unavailable. Ivan needs to have a strong back four behind him if he is going to be effective in the midfield.

I am happy with Jeff Campbell and James Pritchet being selected. They must have earnt it based on their form in the National league and at least will be fully fit and switched on. Pearce could have been put in the squad as he has that confidence that is needed and has also shown some great form in the national league.

Anyway, sorry for the long essay. Had a bit to get off my chest.

You'd think that we may be in with a slight chance if Giggs and Bellamy don't play. With Wales playing the Czech Republic the following Saturday I just don't see these two playing unless they are under the cosh...but as a Canaries fan I'm interested to see how the defence copes with Robbie Earnshaw should he start, and I suspect he may do with the young fella from Southend. The fact that we are at least having these games is great, because we have the chance to work on our ranking. Ukraine will pose further problems as technically they are way ahead of what we have. The worst result would be another pummelling like the last two outings. Be nice to get some goals. I'd rather see us attack the welsh than sit back and soak up stuff defensively. To me the game is about attack and scoring goals. We tend to play defensive football and hope to make something on the break. Oh if only we were the Brasil of the South Pacific....:-p

Freddy Eastwood ( young fella from Southend)is struggling with back injury hasn't played for a couple of games according to the BBC.

Tosack has picked four other uncapped players so he will probaby play them against All Whites to check them out.

You wouldn't think he will risk Bellamy or Giggs. Game will only a couple of days after the champions league final so hopefully he will still be off celebrating a Liverpool victory or playing golf fuah692007-05-14 22:08:07

Yeah Eastwood. I recall a story about him earlier this year living out of a caravan. Kind of reminds me of the Knights dutchman who used to live on the streets..and was not very highly thought of in Holland, yet was deemed good enough to be a Knights player.

Anyway, Toshack will experiment for sure and that would mean the big guns may sit on the bench just incase he's looking at an embarrassment. But with most players at least playing in the championship he will still be able to put out a side that should be more than a test for the All Whites.

The game the following week is a European Championship qualifer and that is the bigger game for Wales. I'd like to see the best put out against us but reality is they will be used in emergency...such as NZ going 2-0 up with 20 to go:-)

I just hope we don't see the All Whites do the usual pass it across the back four style and that they pull finger and play the game a little quicker.

If Bellamy and Giggs aren't playing I think we can win. With the likes of Bertos, Vicelic, Barron, Killen we have more than enough good players to win. I'd like to see Costa Barbarouses included in the squad in place of Brockie.

The players will have to be motivated and up for it, otherwise expect the usual:-p
If at least 8 of the players can put in there best game all on the same day we'll be in with a shot. If 3 or 4 of them put in a good game we'll get done. We are going to need every player to be mentally right and looking to play football. They should remember that there are in the shop window, and it only takes a great performance and they could be making some good money out of the game rather than struggling. I've heard Che Bunce picked up $100k for his short time at Coventry. Thats good pingers if you can get it.

I too would have liked to see Costa in the squad, even just to give him experience and a 10 minute cameo in one of the games. It's obvious that he's going to be some player - unless something goes seriously awry - so let's get him exposed to the top levels of football and have a look.
I think we can get something from the Wales game. Like you all, I do want to see us score, the defensive side of the game is a lot easier to master at international level than the attacking side.

Jarrod Smith (one of the few promising strikers we have) gets injured and replaced in the squad by Sigmund - a defender - how does that work?
We have 19 at the mo - Ricki talked about leaving the 20th space open but who/why?

Allan Pearce? Campbell Banks?

Hi guys, this is my first post... anyways, I'm dissapointed that both Buncy and Noah have just retired, as, lets be honest we are sending a team of amatures off to play against some of the best midfielders and forwards in football.

And if you look at our central American results against teams worse where we played with a better NZ team, I'm scared of the result.  I've got a ticket to the game in Wales already, as well as the Maori (I'll need this game to make me happy supporting a winning side again!).

What erks me is that Brent Fisher, easily NZ's second best striker now, seems to be on the outer with Herbert (unless he is injured, anybody know?) and we have a very talented 18/19 year old playing football for FC Midtjylland called Winston Reid.  Like all half decent kiwis he is a defender but that aside he has not worn the silver fern at any level, I get the feeling that NZ Football still has some scouting to do.

Hey Disco Mart,

I wouldn't worry to much about how we are going to do against Wales and the Ukraine. I think we should find these games a bit more similair to our style of play and Costa Rico and Venezueala would be better sides than wales at the moment(my opinion).

Buncy and Noah were both reliable and decent players. But we have got some cover in those areas with out losing too much. Maybe Noah will be the biggest loss of the two.

I am not sure about Brent Fisher at the moment. He is playing in a lower league somewhere in the world, no doubt.

Good call about Winston Reid. Born in the north of the north island I beleive and part Maori. Unfortunately I believe he has represented Denmark at Under 19 level internationally. Guess he prefers to pursue his Danish career rather than the All Whites. Can't blame him really, can we?

ps. I will be at the Wales game too.

Brent Fisher is in Sweden I think Bodens BK (?) - Winston has thrown his lot in with Denmark - so Ricki can't do much unless Winston changes his mind before he hits 21.
Pity really - we've also got a kid (McGlinchey?) at Celtic and another  (Tommy Smith?) at Ipswich who have decided to persue Scotland and England honours respectively - I s'pose you can't blame them too much but it is a bit of kick in the guts for our international future.
Don't wish ill but I almost hope they don't cut it and realise it before they hit 21 so they decide to make themselves available for us.

Winston Reid said he would consider switching back to New Zealand before he is 21. But at the moment he is better goes with Denmark because he will get the best develpment, if he chose NZ at this stage he would miss out. Probaby the same as the other two mentioned.
