All of those goals in the Bahrain-Saudi match were of higher quality then our 3 goals.

You would hope so because against a better team with a real ref we would be lucky to have got 1 goal (Fallons).

can someone let me know if there is an away fans section in the stadium, and how we get tickets for that?  I am about 70% certain of going, but want to make sure I end up with any other kiwis who go at the ground.

have tried calling the bahrain FA but no answer and its ramadan over here at the moment so it might take a bit of time to get hold of someone, but il work on it come sunday as thats our first workday here in the sandpit.

il just see if we can get a section blocked off for us and also what the deal is tickets etc..

we will definately be needing the black playing shirts as wearing an all white shirt surrounded by the locals in their white dish dashes has about as much effect as giving Cleberson the ball 6yards out with an open goal..absolutelyu nothing!!!

if anyone else has anything else for me to find out let us know.

Touch me..that sounds super dodgey!!!we will do some groundwork for sure..i should be able to pull together a few people..Will have to meet up for a beer sometime

Wow I think we have a real shot. If we can nick an away goal then I think we could do it. Bahrain's home stadium did not seem nearly as intimidating as Saudi's. I actually am confident of a win. Just keep the good ball coming to Smeltz and lets light some cigars ..

But seriously, Smeltz, Bertos and Killen are totally in the form of their lives.(Well Killen might not be but he sure has been firing) Fallon looks quality too. Elliot looked great - hope he can pick up more gametime. Nelsen is a huge rock, and with Sigmund there too we will be hard to crack down. Lochhead looks to be regaining form, and Brown has been playing box to box hard and gives it his all. Paston is commanding and Vicelich looks like he could be a big part of the team too. McGlinchey has potential, and so does young Scott. With Brockie hopefully getting some good time at the Fury, this could potentially be the side we remeber for a very long time.

We can do it.

Mate, to be fair, Bahrain will be a huge handful.
Hope RH is positive and doesn't play away for a draw.

Why wouldn't he ?

Pretty much every team in the world goes in to the first leg of a two leg play-off looking for a draw or to play defensively and steal a goal.

lol.

I think if we can maintain them as long as we don't play overly defensive and go asking to be attacked. A 451 formation with Bertos and Smeltz instructed to be ready to Counter attack at any given time would do me nicely. I know Bahrain will be a handful, I've watched both games, but we have the quality to match them.

HN, because thats the way to lose.
Yeah, he's already implied he will go for a draw.
Lets try and bring a win back to NZ, then finish them at home.
Bahrain will be hard as to crack, but we can do it!

I think it is most likely we will see the formation used that was played today. With Smeltz dropped back and more of a 4-4-1-1 formation. It will be interesting who we use as the lone striker. I think Killen is a certain starter for the home-leg however.

Not being funny, but at one stage in the Jordan game, Nelsen pushed up a bit and made a couple of nice(what looked easy) passes that we tend to sometimes make look hard.

It just looked like something was going to happen when he pushed up.

Then it brought me back to the thoughts of our Argentinian friend JAVIER who recommended we put Nelsen in front of the back four. Of which most people laughed, but to be honest I think it could work.

I mean if we have a reasonably strong back four anyway, they can still have guidence from Nelsen in front of them. Then we have a much stronger midfield, an area we have tended to struggle in.

Something like this:

                                                           Paston

                         Scott             Sigmund          Vicelich                Lochead
                                                            Nelsen
                                         Elliott                             Bertos
                                                           Smeltz
                                                Killen
                                                                      Fallon

If we build it, they will come...

I am pretty sure that there is another thread where it discusses the pros and cons of trying out new formations and playing people out of position first the first time in our biggest game for 25 years.  From memory, the pros where presented as "we might beat der assez, Mega-lolz", while the cons were presented as "there is a very good chance that putting square pegs in round holes will completely screw up our chances of playing in a world cup".

Without going over old ground again, I want to say that there is a difference between bringing the ball out of defence a couple of times (where the midfielders have pulled away to create space for a player to waltz into and pick a pass unchallenged) and playing in the midfield.  I am not saying that Nelsen couldn't do it (although I do suspect that passing is not his greatest strength) but merely pointing out that this is not the game to "give it a go".

Club sides have the luxury of training every day for months, so can look at changing these formations, etc, but we are going to have possibly half a dozen sessions together at the most before the Bahrain game kicks off.

Also, remember the Keegan experiement when he tried to play Gareth Southgate as a holding midfielder versus Germany?

Fair point.

I just think the back four i named is pretty sound, then in the midfield we have two good defensive  ball winners in Elliott and Nelsen. The rest are attacking players.

Don't worry I will go back in my shell now.

just trying to organise time off work, and tickets for the game, so will hopefully book from Manchester in the next couple of days.  Looking to go out Wednesday or Thursday and fly from Bahrain to Qatar Sunday or Monday night (flying from qatar to Manchester on Monday or Tuesday morning).

One of the lads from Dubai was trying to get in contact with the Bahrain FA about tickets, and I was going to get one of my bitchs (Feverish, Hard News, Smithy, etc) or someone else from here to check with the NZ FA tonight our time.

Huge difference in bringing the ball out of defence and being able to play with your back to goal as a midfielder needs to be able to.  I also think theat Nelsen is just too immobile these days.  I watched him live a couple of times last year and although he does a good job in the premiership, he's very much a central defender as in he rarely strays from central areas.

Does anyone have any kind of low down on Bahrain?  Star players?  Recent results?

Cool, if I can get a ticket for the game then I am good to go, would do Thurs to Sun or Monday. Once someone finds out about tickets let me know... Keen to ensure sitting in "away" section so maybe we can co-ordinate on tickets once details are known...

To be honest, I thought our back 4 was anything but sound against Jordan, especially in the second half. They struggled with the quick interplay in our defensive third, and off the ball running of Jordanian players. Think we'll definitely need to find a way to fix that problem, or we're in for a couple of long nights.

On the upside, I think we can definitely score against them, Smeltz is growing in stature as an international forward and is in excellent form, and Fallon, judging by yesterday, is a good addition.
