Whatever happened to Chris James??, from what i saw he was a decent player... that would solve the problem at left mid..

The word I heard from someone inside the camp is he has an attitude problem and an ego that probably hasnt yet lined up with his ability. I really like him as a player and when I heard he had an attitude problem I was pretty disappointed. He can definately play.

I've posted this earlier, but I'm gonna maybe say move out Vicelich wide. I think keep the back four of Sigmund, Nelsen, Vicelich and Lochhead. Choose who plays right back. Sure they exposed us wide, but I think they knew Leo was average, and his positional play was terrible.

                  Paston
Vicelich Nelsen Sigmund Lochhead
                 Elliot
       Bertos     McGlinchey
                 Smeltz
            Fallon   Killen

All our best players on the pitch. Smeltz more central like he is used to, working off the two strikers up front as more target men. McGlinchey and Bertos being the creators with Bertos pushing up either flanks with McGlinchey steadying the others side, Elliot to break off some of their central players.

I would go with Vicelich/ Sigmund at RB over anyone else.
If leo could play there and not be too over exposed, then why not play another one of our stronger players there??
They would have better tracking and greater defense, and I'm actually tempted to say Sigmund again. It'd be a choice between who can offer more going forward and I think Sigmund proved that on Sunday.

Flip a coin. Sigmund vs Vicelich for me at RB.
unless Nelsen could....

I like the look of that side, I also think the diamond midfield formation will be the best way to stop the Bahrain side charging through the middle and then poking there through balls in behind our defenders. Nice line up.Stack2009-10-12 11:01:33

I still think we need brown and Elliot in the midfield together.

I would drop one of the strikers, and bring in Mcglinchey. Not sure of the formation though.. Ricky has some big decisions to make.

Vicelich is too slow for right back, I think the point in having Leo there (wingback) in Manama was to track runs and keep up with their wingers and forwards.

Not sure I would keep a front three. Smeltz did ok linking play when ever he moved back though usually on the right flank I would go with Fallon on bench and move McGlinchey into starting 11.

Having two defensive minded midfielders is something I'd keep, although Brown and Elliot sat too deep and were just asking to be run at. I just don't think Elliot can cope by himself with breaking up their fast attacking midfielders.

Quite interesting talked to a lot of people about the return leg at school today many didn't even know tickets were on sale, this included some of the best football players but most are looking forward to it. I think NZ football just needs to work on promoting the game then it should be close to  or a sell out.

Don't think they have an endless budget to promote so they are saving it for the late hit and once they knew what the first leg was like.

There is stuff in the papers today for instance and expect it to ramp up.

Wood in for Fallon somewhere second half, and maybe bring Brown on.

I think it's a little harsh to drop Smeltz after being slightly AWOL for just one game - he was obviously identified by Bahrain as a threat and was shut down very quickly. He's been a consistent performer for club and country for a couple of years now, perhaps tweaking his position on the field, playing a little more central with better balls from the flanks would suit him better.

I also didn't like seeing Bertos so far back but the problem, as many have rightly pointed out, is lack of pace. We will get slaughtered outwide if we have backs (wingbacks or fullbacks) that can't keep up with their wingers. It shouldn't be too much of a problem dealing with crosses, but our supposed aerial dominance in defence didn't inspire me with confidence.

This is just an idea but if Brown is picked he should drop to help with elliot and bertos a attacking solo midfielder or if mcglinchey is picked he should join bertos in a creative partnership with Bertos and with elliot by himself in a dfencive mif field role so either a 4-2-1-3 or a 4-1-2-3 not sure this could be terrible or a good option  let me know what you think

I have to say this, but as much as I respect the '82 members of the AWs team, I would not give them any celebrations of their old success and steal the current AWs pre-match mental preparations going into the game. The last thing that we want is to distract them in the big game.

(If anything, if the Bahrains know really anything about Wynton Rufur, we should get him to poke his head around their locker room just to say hi and get them to take photos with him and get them distracted from the game a bit. If not, then it would be a nice little friendly PR.)

Anyway, I would have them be in the big photo behind them and leave it at that. It is the current AWs way to make their own history and so we should give them that. If they lose, then the shame of not living up to the '82 AWs would be a bit less in the moment.

The '82 AWs would just have to wait after the game for the publicity stuff with the current AWs should we win.

Anyway, thats my thoughts on this. I don't mind the little things but the last thing we should be doing is to added unnecessary pressure on the guys.

just  saw  the whole  game online.-

1st Great  tactic  game  for  the whole team.,  well done  Herbert,  playing  3-4-3  a la Marcelo Bielsas chile

Regarding the performances  some players  played out of  position, so it is hard always., and this was  a  2 legged  final-

NZ played better in  1 st half   with   number  8  and  7    plus  number  6 (nelsen)  commanding the  central  field ,    good  cohesion  between the lines ,  and  nelsen  was  playing  good his  "libero" position, when he  adbanced   number  4 and  5 closed  with  11 and 3  forming  a   back  4  formation.

The team  was  well worked  tactucally  by the manager  specially  in defence  the  most  probelms  came  from the  right flank    #4 did not  played well  in my point of  view  and   # 11 always got  in a  1,2 situation.

for  attacking  smeltz  and  killen  are  not  wide forwards  and it showed  during  the  game, even  smeltz  is  the  nz  faster  forward  and  sometimes  he can  create  some good football  when playing together with  # 12., in 2 half

the team  needs to remain the same  for  2 nd leg    and  bertos  will be  better  in a  rb position this  time  ,  since  he is needed  in this  position and  he was  very  good  when going forward  in the  minute  83 almost set  up  a goal in a  long run and   short centering .-

my ratings  3-4-3  formation

1- paston  ( was  ok  when asked  and looked  secured  most of the time) 7
4- sigmund  improved  in the  last  20 minutes of the game but looked rusty,  best thing he blocked a scored  but gave away a  rebound late on the game  short near the box,    good effort.-5
6-NELSEN (C)  marshalled the game specially on 1 st half, where he was able to play  a holding mid  at times  in his  "libero" position .  2nd  half  he was  correcting the mistakes  of # 4 and at the end # 5, always looked  cool, and  like playing in his backyard.  We need a player like  nelsen in the argentina national team.- 8
5-Vicellich like nelsen looked  composed and with  experience. looked  very good and sharp  in 1 st half and solid, he run out of legs on the lat  10 minutes  and was exposed by the  subsistutes forwards he should  have been replaced by boyens at the last 12 minutes  because we was attacked by fresh strikers.- 6
11-Bertos played in a rare position.  Very good going forward and got exposed  when defending, it shows  he is not a defender but he is the  best option at this level for  nz to reach a  world cup place.-  6
7- elliot   at 35,  looked good and helped  nelsen and brown to close down creativity in midfield, linked well  with # 12 and,  he is reliable  and calm  i want him in my team for this  kind of play offs.-  6
8-Brown  I think he played really good 1st time he created a shield with elliot and nelsen  in the center  of the park, was good at tackling and provided  cover, a tactic player  he wants to be Frank Lampard at times, i do not know  why he was replaced , maybe he was getting tired. And i think  he was missed in the last  25 minutes  of the game.- 7
3- Lochead  he played well and cover  well the left flank and understood each other well with vicellich,  he is getting better and growing in confidence he is the same kind of player  as  aussie  Scott Chipperfield.-  6
9-Smeltz  he played better the last 45 minutes he looked better, 1st half was quiet , anyway i think  he as  killen  they`played out of position.  Better  working as a creative player  with  # 12, .- 6
14- fallon Fought and showed  presence and created space  for the rest  of the team,  he needed more creative link to deliver hold the ball well .- 6
10-killen, good 1st  half  quiet 2 nd ,  even though he was  a menace and he got unlucky because  almost scored twice in 2 nd half from half chances , played in a rare position he is a menace for defenders.  if he raises a bit  nz  will be in next world cup., he is class and when he is quiet is when u know he may score.- 6

12- Mc Glinchey is quick and  played well moved well should play  in a free role  behind the strikers  ,  he  is not  a defensive  mid  bahrein was putting dead balls  when brown was not anymore, he should start  but  only in a free role, to run all over the park and  provide confusion to bahrein.- 7

13-Wood  17/18 years old looked good  and scored  a goal  physical  presence and  he is not afraid.  replaced fallon  well.-  6

for me based  on the  players  avail and  the game played ..  to reach  world cup, herbert  needs to  keep`same formation  or maybe going

and i think he good play

paston

sigmund    nelsen   vicellich   lochead

                            elliot        brown

bertos

                          mc glinchey

            killen                    smeltz

but the best team for me  to beat  Baherin
  should be

  paston

bertos         nelsen           vicellich/sigmund      lochead

                       brown                          elliot
