All Whites v Korea | Tuesday 31st March | 11:50pm | SS1
You are going to struggle to fit Thomas, Kosta and Marco on the field. Too similar and then have Wood as well.
Ridenton is injured and has not being playing. He may be signed to a bigger club than others, but he is not playing and the level he is playing at, is no different to the Wanderers kids. No one has been saying he has been ripping it up either ala Boyd at that level. Similarly with Payne. He was ok at ACFC and despite all his experience etc, was not setting the world on fire.
I'm not so sure some of the names mentioned offhand that should/would be there, will be.
Surely we want Hicks and Ridenton to control the mdifield, pass the ball well and link up with their team mates. If they were doing that well then I don't know that we would even hear about it.
Well yep. My objections are only two-fold
- I want to watch us challenging Korea as a fan. Cos I think we certainly could. If this team can great. Otherwise what's the point in watching?
- I want players to earn and value the chance to be in the AWs. Maybe those who know the Wanderers team can explain better how players from a team in the lower half of the ASBP can challenge Sth Korea?
It'd be nice if we can call Hudson the Kiwi Ange. Proof will be in the pudding. Ange had quite an impressive recent record going into the Aussie coaching gig though.
Very good point that. Hudson got dumped by a non league club side and only seemed to have had moderate success for Bahrain.
Surely the U23 qualifiers are a better environment to blood the young non pros, not the AWs. Cheapens the significance of the Fern otherwise I feel.
And prior to the Brisbane success Ange got dumped by the Aussie youth sides after failing spectacularly.
Fact is; even with the best coaching and planning in the world, we may still fall short because of the fact that basically everything is against us as a backwater footballing nation.
As much as Thomas, Kosta and Rojas along with Wood sounds great, it just can't happen. Where do you fit them all? At the moment, based on time and form, Kosta starts over Rojas.
I'm not sold on Tuiloma as a DM. I know that's his club position but it's never been a position for him prior to arriving in France. You could say in the same vein, Fenton has never been a RB until the Phoenix. I guess if Tuiloma was a lock (and Tuiloma minds me of Reid in being so casual) then I think the others would not get a look - van bockdebowhatshisname and the Greek.

True on wee Mac but I would like to see Rojas, Thomas and Barba all start as well as wee mac.
I would go for something like Crocombe; Fenton, Boxall, Reid, Roux; Tuiloma, van den Broek, Tzimopoulos; Rojas, McGlinchey, Thomas; Wood

If Greek Tim and VdBroek are even mostly competent and can string a few passes together, it will be an improvement for us in the middle of the park I feel.
The question for me is can they get enough going forward without McGlinchey, who doesn't offer the counterattacking pace of Rojas, Thomas or Barbarouses and probably isn't as useful when we're trying to hold teams out.
The other thing about not having the incumbents there is when they come back into the squad they might be trying to prove a point to Hudson and play accordingly. Hudson has talked about wanting to create competition for places after all, so dropping guys who thought they were a shoe-in might help stoke that.
I think the discussion on this thread simply illustrates exactly what Hudson is trying to achieve. Here we are, assuming the two new guys can play, debating who plays and who misses out. Go back a year ago and we were debating who the hell could play in the midfield.
I agree with the others that this window will be considered a success if:
1) Greek Tim and Van de B can play - are strong, can pass and move well
2) Rojas, Thomas and Kosta show more than a couple of glimpses of skill and can combine with Wood as well as do their defensive duties
If we can do these two things as well as the stuff we won't directly see (culture, professionalism etc) then it'll be good, and that probably means us doing more than defending for 90 mins and actually applying some pressure and moving the ball at pace to get players in behind for goal scoring opportunities.
No way Thomas, Rojas and Barbarouses can all start and McGlinchey is a key player or at least I think that's how Hudson sees him. I would say Crocombe; Roux, Reid, Tzimopoulos, Doyle; Van den Broek, Tuiloma; Rojas, WeeMac, Thomas; Wood.

How do you know Greek Tim and Van de B can play?

Oops, apologies. Just re-read that and missed the fact you put an "if" before that statement.
Whatever the starting line up, all I know is, this is gonna be 1 interesting squad. You never, they could surprise us just like Auckland City did. We just need to wait and see what happens on the night :)
exactly.. A big "if"..,
I would expect both keepers to be used during the match. Moss isn't getting any younger and Hudson will want to see who else can step up.
Howieson still playing at a very low U21 still and needs to get out
James 4th level french and prob shouldve come and played ASB prem.
James has not even been good enough / fit enough to play for a French Div. Four club -
He's made only one start and five as a sub all season (none since Late November).
So he's either out of favour or injured again. Hudson would have no reason to select him.
See season stats:
I think you're onto what Hudson will do.
When you look at that lineup it actually looks pretty promising.
Starting lineup when analysed by the league they play in:
German Third Div.
A-League English Premier League Greek Super League ASB Premiership
Romanian First Div. French Ligue 1 Dutch Eredivisie Swiss Super League
A-League English Championship
Four A-League players on the bench too.
Rojas is going well in the Swiss Super League - has played in all five of Thun's league games since signing (four starts) and yesterday's away loss to Basel in which he played the full ninety - their first loss since he started playing for them.

FC Thun now fourth on the Swiss table.
Burfoot played junior football here (e.g. for Waitak in Manchester Cup win over central in 2009) before he went back to the UK to play a coupla seasons of non-league.
And 24 yr-old Devries seems to have been playing ASB firstly for Waitak then with ACFC for yonks!

James has been one of the best for the All Whites when actually given a chance. If someone has done well for the All Whites then I feel that they should be the incumbent. Tuiloma plays at a far higher level than James but when they have played together, James has looked like the better player. I'm cool with James not being in the squad because Tuiloma is far ore promising and needs more time in the AW's environment. I don't think we should forget about James.

James is consistently extremely strong for the all whites, it is a surprise he is left out and goes against the coach saying they want players who perform for the national team. For all we know James could have a bad attitude and be a rubbish trainer. I found it surprising James has never done better at club level, that guy can pull off a performance on the field.

pretty disappointed that Dura was not named in the squad, he has improved alot this season.
"It means that at this moment in time, there are lots of players that we don't need to see, and I'll put in that list now Brockie and Tommy Smith and a number of others. This will probably be our last chance in this cycle to look at any new players, any young players, and there will come a point - post the Olympic qualifiers in July, where we will really narrow down our squad and get into a much more consistent group."
....
"I've spoken to quite a lot of players individually and understandably no, not all the players were happy and they were disappointed because they want to be a part of it, but if I didn't get any other response I would be disappointed myself."

Why is everyone finding this so hard to grasp? Fair enough if you don't agree with it, but it's pretty clear what he's trying to do isn't it?
yeah he's gone. When a guy over 25 isn't playing for his club (unless the club is top echelon) you are going to struggle.
A shame as he was the guy who wanted the ball most when he played. He rarely went missing in games as was always the one wanting the ball played out to him or thrown to him, taking the free kicks etc. We can speculate all we want about his attitude too but its a shame as he's only 27 (feels older but he was really young when he made his debut). Someone like Bill is obviously more athletic and Hudson is banking on his and the club managers ability to coach him into a more complete player. If we were playing the intercontinental playoff or even WC quailies tomorrow Id have the James from the Mexico playoff any day but Hudson has two years..

Well, if he was dead keen for the AWs he'd find himself a club where he could play at a good level

Do we know yet if sky has picked this up?

Playing youth football in NZ doesn't make him eligible, Does he have citizenship? and when did he obtain it? or was he born here? Or were his parents kiwis?

Burfoot is interesting only because there is more than we know. Not born here, no heritage ties. Has been in and out the country... He must have ticked some box somewhere cause he has to have an NZ passport. I'll admit I am surprised cause I thought he was not eligible.
I'll add to that, if he is eligible, then does that make David Browne eligible too cause he is one hell of a footballer.
Didn't Browne play for a PNG youth team before he held NZ citizenship, and is therefore ineligible?
