Win Sth K 4/9  NZ 13/2 on Bet365. Similar on all others.

NB Result will be known on April Fool's Day.

That seems like it's overly generous to us.Easy money picking South Korea for the win.

Looks like they have picked a slight weakened squad. Only 10 players were involved in the Asian Cup. 3 that started against Uzbek started against Australia in the final.

Even so, they're at home against our team who got thumped by Uzbekistan but this time our team is even lighter on international and professional experience. And two of the most professionally experienced players in the squad have never played with this team at all before. There's still only one way this is going to go I reckon (but I'd be delighted to be proved wrong)

I'm really looking forward to this game. Esp seeing Rojas now he is playing regularly.

Could be wrong thread but....

To get the attention of the wider public somehow NZF need to create credible and meaningful matches.

Our problem is that the credible teams we play (eg Korea, Japan, China, Uzbekistan etc) are "friendlies" and thus aren't meaningful.

On the flip side the meaningful games we play, ie qualifiers, aren't credible as they are against weak(er) opposition.

So at present only 3 confederation cup games and 2 qualifiers - a total of 5 games every 4 years are both credible and meaningful - unless we qualify. And of those 5 games only 1 of them is in New Zealand.

That's not enough.

I applaud NZF for thinking strategically and lining up fixtures against commercial trading partners.

Next, if they aren't already, they need to lobby to get into Asia. If we are serious about building the sport you can't do it through regular friendlies and a once in a 4 year shot at a World Cup, Confed Cup.

To be relevant, we must have credible, meaingful and visible games.

Hopefully matches like this one are step 1 of NZFs master plan to get into Asia.

Interesting article in stuff.co.nz

When speaking about Clayton Lewis Hudson said as follows.

"He's come in and he's been real brave and grabbed the opportunity. He's really exerted himself and shown what he can do so that's been really pleasing. And not all of the younger players have been like that.

"There's only been one or two that have really come in and shown what they can do. It's just so exciting to see a young kid come in and we know he's got ability, but it's whether he can do it around some of the senior players and in a context like this where there's a bit of pressure on with a big game and big opposition.

What's interesting is what he says about the other younger players. You wouldn't typically hear a coach say that a few of his squad aren't up to it before a match.

This is the thing about picking these U23 players who aren't playing in professional environments. They will get found out when playing with senior pros.

Does Hudson really need to take these players from NZ and the wanderers half away around the world to find out they are no good?

Couldn't he figure this out by running a camp for them here?

Nothing like the real thing.

I'm glad he's playing youngsters and bringing them into the environment. We may not get the results we want at the start but moving forward I think it will pay dividends.

$2.25 for Nice Korea -1.5 is tempting. I would be very happy if we could keep it to a 1 goal margin.

To be fair football friendlies are exactly the same as the ABs end of season tours to the Northern Hemishere.

Everyone makes a big thing of playing England, Wales, France, Ireland etc but really these are only friendlies too.

This

Considering Hudson has so little hands on time with players and he is so interested in developing youngsters then why don't they set up a camp in Australia and play a string of games against the likes of the Oz Institute of Sport side or any State teams that will play them. Either that or let him take a NZ "A" side on a tour of South East Asia. He needs training and match time with these youngsters.

I kind of wonder if there are parallels to what Ange Kostapoglu did with the Oz team and what Hudson has in mind. Ange came in and quickly stamped his style on the squad. He bought in quite  a few new guys and dumped some older guys like Lucas Neill etc. It took him ages to get the new methods through to the players and they went 12 games without a win before it finally all came together with the Asia Cup win. And now they even get a 2-2 playing Germany.

Hudson seems to have very strong views on how he wants the AW's to play. He now is looking for the right sort of players to implement that style. We could see some surprises coming through and some  older players might see the end of their AW careers

How do you mean sorry? Are you saying they will perform better in a better environment i.e. AWs vs Wanderers?

Korea side that played the Uzbeks:

Still, some of their top, experienced players started like Suk-Young Yoon (QPR), Ja-Cheol Koo (Mainz), Bo-Kyung Kim (Wigan), Kook-Young Han (J-League player now at Qatar FC), Heung-Min Son (23 apps for Bayer Leverkusen so far this season)

Came off the bench:

Sung-Yong Ki (Swansea City), Chang-Soo Kim (Kashiwa Reysol, J-League), Joo-Ho Park (Mainz)

Five subs got a run.

Uli Stielike was clearly giving a few young players in their early 20's a go because experienced players like 30 cap Dong-Won Ji (Augsburg) remained on the bench and even the captain Sung-Yong Ki (Swansea City) only came off the bench (on 32 mins)

Two subs came on in the first 42 mins.

Anyone see the All Whites on the 6 pm news last week with John Key trying a few pens against Crocombe in goal (I think it was he)?

Missed the first but scored from the second.

It was one of those little training goals.

It was in the main body of the news reporting on Key's visit to Korea.

John Key's Facebook, in a piece of political spin, only shows him scoring, not missing the first time:

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1015318177630...

I guess you can say it was a PR opportunity for both Key and the AW's.

For the sake of balance, here's a piece of non PR spin centring on John Key and a ball:

Is this Uli Stielike the old West German hard man? I used to love him as a player.
