Ticketing: Australia vs New Zealand Farewell Match

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today released the ticketing details for the
upcoming blockbuster farewell match between the Socceroos and New Zealand All
Whites at the MCG on May 24 before both teams leave for the 2010 FIFA World Cup
South Africa.

A massive crowd is expected to cheer on the full Qantas Socceroos squad that is
expected to include their biggest names such as captain Lucas Neill, Tim Cahill,
Harry Kewell and Mark Schwarzer as they take on New Zealand.

The game follows the farewell blockbuster tradition set when the Socceroos
played Greece before the 2006 FIFA World Cup at the MCG.

"This match will be the perfect opportunity for Australian sports fans to farewell
the Socceroos before they head off to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South
Africa," said FFA CEO Ben Buckley.

"The atmosphere for the last farewell match against Greece in 2006 was electric and
we are expecting a sea of green and gold in the stands to cheer the boys on before
they take on the world.

"The fact that we will be facing a traditional sporting rival in New Zealand will
make the match even more meaningful with bragging rights on the line," concluded
Buckley.

Socceroos Head Coach Pim Verbeek is also looking forward to this exciting match.

"For New Zealand to qualify for the FIFA World Cup is an outstanding achievement,"
Verbeek said.

"Only last week they narrowly lost to Mexico in front of a crowd of 90,000 which
shows that they are not easily intimidated on big occasions.

"The major benefit for us, in the lead up to South Africa, is that their style of
play is very similar to the "European" style.

"Due to the rivalry between our two teams that goes back many years we are
definitely expecting a very competitive match against the All Whites.

"Finally, the match will not only be an opportunity for the fans to farewell the
Socceroos, but also for us to say thank you to the fans for supporting us
through the qualification campaign," concluded Verbeek.

Tickets for this match will go on-sale to the Football Family from 12 pm Monday 22
March until 9pm Wednesday 24 March and to the general public from 9am Monday 29
March from Ticketek.

The match is supported by the Victorian Government.

Hmm, I am a great AW's supporter, as were the other people who also showed up to watch them play against Vanuatu with me!

But yes they're obviously my second team, and I can't very well show up in my hometown supporting the enemy :)

I haven't followed closely, is Reid a definite starter for this match? And does anyone know which strip NZ will be using? Probably a bit early for that I guess. Hopefully its white.

Make the trip truly worthwhile. Keep heading west towards South Africa for some real fireworks. This game is a warm-up, an exhibition. Treat is as such.

DS,you're an idiot. Buffy probably (like a lot of us) cant afford to go to SA. But the prospect of a game vs aussie in melbourne to see the 2 sides off sounds like a lot of fun.

Getting sick of your "I know it all" attitude. 95% of what you say doesnt even make sense,so god knows how you get such an attitude.

I'll shut up on this game then until after its been held. Everyone happy with that?

(But I do reserve my right to make comment on here after the game is held, righty or wrongly, I'll have my say then, and depending on circumstances at the time, I'll either let rip, or I'll be quiet. Until then I'll leave you boys to enjoy the build-up to it. It's an NZ-based forum, so I'll treat it as such).

I know you've already said you'll shut it but come on man, for a lot of people this will stretch the budget, but we will still turn up anyway. It's about the passion of watching the All Whites not the thrill of winning something big.

I can't afford to go to the WC. I can just about afford to go to this. So for me this is like my WC trip. AWs v Aussie at (hopefully) a packed MCG sounds good enough to me.

In the short space of time you've been here, you've managed to go straight to the top of my talks-a-lot-of-sh*t meter.

Calling it an exhibition game is a load of bollocks.  This is an exhibition match: http://www.eventfinder.co.nz/2008/dec/auckland-central/la-galaxy-vs-oceania-all-stars.

Does any one know how many away seats there will be for this match? Whatever it is I hope we pack it out. Like someone already said, this is like our World Cup trip for some of us fans who can't afford to go to South Africa, so let's do our best to show the boys our support before they head off!

$30 a night in a shared room or $65 a night in a single room. I'm staying Sunday and Monday night. Will go into a shared room probably but obviously would rather it be with some other AW supporters.

                    Paston (if fit)

Reid      Nelsen       Smith        Lochy

McGlinchey    Brown   Elliot    Bertos

      Smeltz                Killen

just out of interest... who would start beside Nelsen at CB if we played a 4-4-2? Smith, Vicelich or Sigmund??

Sigmund i'd imagine at cb if there is two in there. I just think Vieclieh is a little too slow.

Also, Siggy has never put a foot wrong in an all whites shirt, it'd be hard to drop him.

Id play Vicelich at CB, and move Smith to LB Lochy can get stuffed.

It would be useful to know a bit more about Reid's ability to play at RB and Smith's at LB. Both may be able to play on the flanks but neither strikes me (from what i know of them) as naturally suited.

Smith has definitely played a bit at left back for Brentford in recent weeks and obviously has a left foot, but seems to still be first and foremost a centreback.

Reid also seems to play primarily at CB and is 190cm tall, but maybe he's versatile enough to play wide.

"We need to win like 10-0 so we have confidence going into the world cup...Well, New Zealand is the perfect team to score 10 goals against "
