If you think about it, it's technically like the Finalissima between Argentina and Italy but between the champs of the two worst confederations... so if we win, does that make us the best nation across Asia and Oceania? 😂😂😂

Whilst the full international team doesn't play again til October, the Olympic qualifiers are in September. So not that far away really.

Our u23 team, plus a couple older heads will almost be man for man our top All Whites team.

We played Iran back in the day for that exact reason.

I don't think there are that many players young enough for the Olympics this time around that are starters for the all whites. waine, stamenic, who else?

Edit 2: I'm pretty sure only stamenic, waine and Surman of the current all whites squad are Olympics eligible. Time marches on - our golden generation is growing up. Given how much of a dogfight it is to establish yourself in English football, I wouldn't expect or hope for waine to make the trip down for qualification either

Interim All Whites head coach Darren Bazeley is set to stick with the same 4-3-3 formation deployed against Sweden but hinted at the pre-match press conference there could be changes to his starting 11.

A few players in the squad are carrying minor injuries but all are available for selection. 

Midfielder Clayton Lewis has returned home for personal reasons.


Player to Watch: Almoez Ali
The Sudan-born striker is a huge goal threat for Qatar with 42 goals in 88 games. The 26-year-old won the golden boot at the last Asian Cup as well as scoring against Paraguay when Qatar played as a guest team at the Copa America.

Can't believe I forgot about Garbett. 

A shame about Lewis, I thought he linked up so well with Joe Bell in Wellington in March and would have loved to see him start.

No, it was too much hassle, one train, two buses and nothing to come back on. Had there been more worning I’d have rented a car but quotes for today were out of this world.

Fantastic game from us so far

It's great the hear the two commentatators have done their homework and show their professionalism. Every Qatari player is called Qatar. I mean, come one guys, real professionals get to learn the opposition names.

Rojas is certainly leading the charge and supported by Cacace. But if this team continue to play across the back before angling a long ball, it won't take long for the Qatar team to figure it out.

Holy heck. That was absolute flashback to the last 10 minutes of the first half against Sweden. We are blessed it somehow hit the post instead but got to clear your lines boys! Hopefully that was a wake up call.

Well that was lucky. A great example of the brain fades he needs to get out of his game.

Some good play though.

couldnt see the pijnaker situation but he was playing good so far,  he needs to work on his right foot though, too lefty for a centerback

If only we would spend less time on passing it around the back and played it in the midfield, but even they are playing defensive back to the defence.  When they do attack, they look quite good. Perhaps they should concentrate on that and not the Hay/Bazeley defensive crap that the tactics seem to have been for a number of years. .

At the start of the game I would have been all for giving Tzanev a run in the second half but you can't say we haven't needed Crocombes services to be sharp this half, and he's certainly risen to the challenge.

Early on I had every intention of going into the half time break singing Rojas' praises but two missed chances have soured that plan a bit.

Don't think we are going to be able to rest on our laurels and sit on the lead. We need to increase that margin as It's only a lack of finishing finesse that's kept Qatar off the scoresheet. They do look capable of getting one through sooner or later. 

Surman on for Pijnaker later if the  match situation allows it?

rojas the strongest player but what a wasteful, the solo run he arched the body back instead  of going forward, so the ball was ballooned ,  he played vs BOCA last week

i would bring an extra midfielder for MATA in my opinion, RUFER OR JUST 

First 20 odd was sublime. Ball speed was superb. 

After Nandos inevitable brain fade and Qatar miss we’ve lost some confidence. 

Enjoyable watch. 

Heck do we look a different team with Rojas... McCowatt also doing bloody well, we're creating quite a few chances against a decent team. 

BELL needs someone else to protect the back 4 , release stamenic of defensive duties the guy is a 10,
