Pun comp closed ages ago!
The squad was entirely selected by Neil Emblen with no input from Hudson - it seems Emblen is not that big a fan of Mr Eager.
I think that Dan Keat should have been selected ahead of Tim Payne - a regular in the Swedish First Div. vs. a kid without a club. Both play in the same sort of position. My only real gripe about the squad.
Completely agree, got so caught up with the non inclusion of Smith that I overlooked squad completely. I also thought that a squad of 20 was going to be announced too. Would have been good in that case to include Keat > Payne, Musa & Fenton.
Would also prefer Spoonley over Williams as I'm not too convinced on what he adds to the squad.
Yup musa deserved to keep squad place. Eager for siggy. Siggy is what 36/37 in 2016? Dura ok for now but same prob
Oh for fitzgerald and smith
Oh and Riera or someone of that ilk coming thru
Just need Fitzgerald to perform and get noticed by some European teams and he's back in the fold.
Played the majority of games for Albirex Niigata this season, but would anyone know what's happening in terms of performance? I can't say I keep up with the J League in any way shape or form, but would be interested to see/hear from someone on whether he's likely to kick on and get noticed by foreign clubs.
Just flicking through their recent transfer history they have shipped out a couple of players to Bundesliga clubs. Even one who appears regularly with Stuttgart. So definitely shows they keep an eye on Asia, which I guess is a good thing.
He has been playing well, been in a few team
Of the weeks and there has been talk that some foreign clubs are interested

Still don't really understand why everybody here faps over Eagar, probably because he's played in Wellington and a few people know him.... but if he's that good and supposedly holds an Aussie passport, why have no A-League clubs picked him up? That's 10 sides that don't want him, which says something to me. Surely that's more than just hard luck
The whole Tommy smith thing still pisses me off. Represent your country man.
I'd love for him to to publicly announce his availability and for NZ football to say nah siggy got your spot. Then maybe use him as a waterboy.
Uh oh - this makes me worried:
All Whites goalie Tamati Williams says he has just acquired a Dutch passport through having a Dutch grandparent (to make it easier to play overseas).
But the Netherlands don't allow dual nationality - they were always tough on it and recently got even tougher. Similar to Japan with the Michael Fitzgerald thing.
My dad is Dutch and I was born in NZ - my understanding was that I could get a Dutch passport but I would have to give up my NZ one.
So Tamati Williams has been named in an All Whites squad but surely no longer has a NZ passport?
I hope he and NZ football are aware of the implications....

"I'm proud to be an All White wherever I'm playing, but I'd still like to become a fulltime professional. I've got to keep banging on doors - I've just got a Dutch passport (through a grandparent) so I'm hoping that can help."

"Ministers Agree to Get Tough on Dual Nationality, Also for the Dutch"
Friday 02 March 2012
"Ministers on Friday decided to press ahead with legislation aimed at reducing the number of people with dual nationality, despite widespread opposition.
The legislation will require everyone who becomes Dutch to give up their original nationality if legally possible. Dutch nationals who take a second nationality will also automatically lose their Dutch passports."
Surely NZF will have done their homework and taken this in to account...
... said no-one ever.
Rojas out - Doyle in.
congrats tom

There is a break in the 2nd Bundesliga. I can only imagine it's a request of Marco/Greuther Fuerth since he has just joined the club. They are playing St Pauli this weekend, who scored this goal in matchday 1 of the 2nd Bundesliga:
one of those instances where he has just joined a club and it's probably understandable.
Case by case Tommy.

I saw The Galight Anthem at Hammersmith a couple of years ago, and they always hang a St Pauli flag when they play live

Who would be the Kiwi in Asia he liked the look of?
Surely not Fitzgerald as he can't be picked.. but was the obvious one
any chance this game will be on tv?
Mmmm got to love the double standards by some on here.Tommy gets a blast from many yet Marco cops FK all.Good to see Hudson make it pretty clear where he stands on the issue.Hopefully Marco and Tommy have taken note.
Still not sure i really see a problem with players doing this at this stage.Yes if qualifying had started it would be completly different.

Off the top of my head, Shay Spitz, Kayne Vincent, Leo Bertos, Butler, Paul Cunningham.

My money is on Cunningham. Big defender, in as a replacement for Smith. Played pro in UK for a few years then was on short list for last year's Singapore player of the year award.

Apparently the 2.Bundesliga doesn't break for FIFA international windows:
FIFA Calendar: 1 - 9 September Official or Friendly matches
Greuther Fürth v St. Pauli September 1, 2014 19:15 Trolli ARENA, Fürth
To me the main culprit is the 2.Bundesliga for not following FIFA international windows. Otherwise there would be no problem and Marco would be playing.
Seems to me what happened is Marco justifiably said "sorry, can't make it to camp on the 1st September due to my league game that day - I can make it a couple of days later" and then Hudson rejected that.
So, I have no problem with Marco's quite reasonable desire to play for his new club (and if I was manager of Greuther Furth, I'd be angry if a key player wanted to miss a league game when his national team friendly game isn't till a week later)
I think Hudson's being too rigid in applying a "you either attend the full one week training camp or else or I don't want you" rule.
To me, that shows his inexperience - just like the new young guy put in charge at work who starts laying down the law based on what he learned at Business School but no practical experience in the real world...
I'm with the Herald reporter on this one:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/football-soccer/news/art...
"Hudson's stance sets a strong precedent, but could also be construed as harsh. Rojas could still have taken part in at least five days of training before the international and Hudson's hard line runs the risk of ostracising a player the All Whites may look to build a team around for the next decade.
"We will be in a position and we have to be in a position where we are not relying on one or two players turning up at the last minute to save us. We're about building the team, getting organised and having a good team spirit and style of play. All these things come with players on the training pitch and contact time."

I "thised" this but I still feel that Marco should have joined up after his St Pauli game.
Next match for him won't be for nearly two weeks so he could probably do with the game for match fitness alone. His preseason has been against pub teams pretty much.
This would be a good level of intensity match for him.
As Big Pete said this might be Hudson putting his foot down.

Maybe Rojas could have still traveled to the camp and trained with the team but not played? Regardless of what we think of Rojas, it is clearly a different situation to Smith.
Can't see why Hudson won't let Rojas turn up after his match. He could fly out the night of the match in Germany and be available for five days of training and then play against Uzbeckistan.
Seems a little over the top to me. Bunds league 2 does not recognize window so Marco can't just walk out of his new club. Hudson needs to cut him some slack. We have very little depth in the AW's and Marco is a key player. Hudson can come all "this is the new tough regime" but he needs to be flexible as well. If he applies this standard in the future then he might have to drop other players as well.
I don't think hes coming out to set a strict regime on players. Rather he has asked them to show commitment. And will pick those who do. thus putting the onus on the players and if they dont get picked then they only have themselves to blame.
Which ever way you see it. I think this is good for the all whites team culture and if we want to have a professional setup n place this needs to happen.
I fully understand where Hudson is coming from. He is wanting his players to turn up and show commitment to the national team. Even though you can understand Royas' position, Hudson can't let it get out of hand. First Smith, now Royas, next ???? Reid, Thomas? He is putting his foot down, and I think he is quite right. We are not world beaters but will punch above our weight if we are committed to the cause. I hope his stance causes othersto think twice begore staying away from international duty.
Perhaps. But it is much much better for the future of the All Whites if Rojas can cement a place in Germany.

And Smith to be a regular in the Premier League.
