Depends how much defensive work Vicelich and the two wingers do. If Vicelich sits back in front of the two CB's and makes it almost a back 4 it could work. As discussed on the podcast, if you were to play a back four, who would be the RB and the LB? We don't have a player who can play RB, therefore for the players we have available, 3-4-3 is the best formation.

It frustrates me because a)  alot of the time it turns into a 5-4-1 and b) because he doesn't know how to change the strategy when it is not working. Jamaica was a classic example of this. When we went a goal down our two wing backs started pushing up leaving the wings open and effectively gifting them two goals. I understand that our available players have an impact on the setup and that is the excuse Herberts been giving for a couple of years now but at the end of the day I would rather we change tactics try something new and lose then do the same old thing we are doing now and lose anyway.

My flashy new All White's kit is going to get it's first use tomorrow. Super excited for this, it's been too long since the last game!

I can just see the non-footballing sports fans reaction to a win "oh well it's only El Salvador they prob don't play rugby so must be shit at soccer too" or if we don't win "why the f**k did they win the halberg, they haven't won since 2010".

Or if it's a draw: "do the All Whites do anything other than draw games?".

Fuck the non-football crowd, they won't even be watching.

I want a win, we can pull off a win and it damn well better happen or I will call upon Cthulhu.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Does anyone know if this game will be streamed live by anyone?  Possibly on this site, anyone watched AW games here before?

"ALAS, ALAS FOR EL SALVADOR"

(Two of their players are called "Alas" which could be amusing in the commentary...)

El Salvador have played the same number of matches as us this year i.e. one- a 2-0 loss to Estonia in LA on the same day we played Jamaica. So, they should be pretty rusty too.

From Sept. 2011 to Nov. 2011 they played only weak opposition: Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Surinam with 100%  winning record.

FIFA ranking: 49

They have less players playing outside their own country than us- two from MLS in the States, one from Finland, two in Guatemala.

Star player is midfielder Arturo Alvarez who plays in Portugal's top flight for Pacos de Ferreira.

Manager Ruben Israel is a Uruguayan who has been a successful club coach in Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia and Chile.

The El Salvador Olympic side came close to qualifying for London, knocking out the USA and narrowly losing the CONCACAF semi to Honduras 2-3. Thirteen of the squad are 23 or under- so many also play in the Olympic side.

Feeling quite calm about this game, but not expecting a result

More interested on how the young lads perform. Definately the changing of the guard.

Should see it all coming together at the end of the OFC qualifers

Although he's sticking with 3-4-3 for this match, looks like Ricki's going 4-4-2 for the Honduras game. I pick up a new willingness to try new players and formations from Ricki right now:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/sport/football/6971225/Ian-Hogg-to-debut-for-All-Whites-in-Houston

"As for New Zealand, they'll retain the 3-4-3 formation, for this match at least, with Herbert suggesting they might play twin strikers in a 4-4-2 against Honduras and in the Nations Cup, opening the door for someone like Jeremy Brockie.

The coaching staff had actually talked about employing a back four tomorrow, with Sigmund at right back, but opted for the status quo given Sigmund is coming off an injury layoff and playing fullback would be physically more demanding."

Also, the Salvadorean gaffer resembles a used-car salesman. Oh, nice defence from Hogg.
