Yes, he should have been subbed earlier and it would have been nice for Baz to be more attacking with Bayliss instead of Thomas who apart from the defensive header looked out of sorts.

But really harsh on Singh, that post. He was good before he tired and was very instrumental in the first goal.

Add at least 4 to your 2.7 rating. Wherever that rating came from?
Seems the one I saw tagged 2 points off Singh compared to others, either way I wasn't as impressed as others on here

Singh was ok, but he needed to be subbed earlier. Baze should have put on Randell earlier... or FDV if we wanted to get some better delivery in to the box.

Whoever is involved in that ratings needs to be fired or given a rating of one for football analysis and knowledge in their bio.

I mean for fucks sake, Surmans rating?

And Crocombes?

Interesting comments. So many don't seem to derive any joy from the game at all.

Such is life. 😉
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's living in Agadez, Niger.  Spending more time in town, Agadez, as bad people in the desert are spoiling the good life.

If you don't take joy from that performance there is something seriously wrong!
In saying that, there are a few performances and changes that need to be questioned..
Payne isn't up to this level, technically or positionally. Cacace looks half the player of old, seems to be carrying extra weight, lost at sea defensively..
Singh, just doesn't have any strength at this level, pushed off the ball far to easily and while helped create a goal, gave away the ball too much..
Boxall at fault for both goals (Cacace initially for second but poor awareness from Boxall)..
They'd be the changes I'd be seriously contemplating for Egypt

This chap did the Herald ratings. Never heard of him.
Seconded off a rugby desk to cover the soccer?

Edit - actually looks like he was the Herald's Travel editor, before becoming their Head of Sport

Definitely against Beligum I'd be considering starting both of them, having quick runners next to Wood will be very much needed in a game where you think we'll mostly be counter attacking.

I think Bindon will take Boxall's place. It was obvious to baze at the end I suspect based off his comments.

Agreed.

The actual performance tops anything in South Africa.

The last minute equaliser against Slovakia and holding Italy to a draw were unbelievable moments and a great part of our history, but never went toe to toe with either of them the way we did today.

Three for me, and two for them.

The output today was better than anything from the past two years in its completeness.

The question is can we continue to match this level? Can we put in more performances up there?

Randall’s value: Shots into the corner of the net and a drive at goal. Singh or Cacace had put their shots into the corner today and things could have been interesting!

Chote definitely seemed to be under the impression that we had a CB pairing of Reid and Wood in 2010, totally missed or forgot it was a back 3 w/ Smith. You hear so many people in the media in NZ talking about football who really have no idea.

Just want to say before I critique us (I can't help it, I'm a critical guy) that that was overall brilliant, and the goals were fantastic. Loved almost every minute of it.

Maybe this was our "best performace ever" but I wish Baze was singing his and his team's own praises a bit less because we can be a fair bit better than that. Payne and Singh were overall quite poor, I know they can both do a lot better. Cacace and McCowatt weren't bad but overall quite quiet. And something has to be done about our CB partnership and their apparent inability to defend basic crossing situations. Haiti, England and Iran all getting headed goals far easier than they should have.

I'm hopeful and even optimistic we can be better against Egypt. Maybe it is best we persevere with Singh but I'd strongly consider replacing McCowatt with Old (and putting Just on the right), Payne with Elliot and Boxall with Bindon.

All things considered I’m over the moon with that result. The fact I’m disappointed we didn’t get the win shows how well we played. And the crowd was both massive and not supporting us, making it more impressive.

One pleasing thing is the stats - 13 shots, 8 on target. Shaded the possession. More passes than them and higher passing accuracy. These stats are almost unheard of when playing non-OFC opposition.

Motherwell are smart to be waiting til after the World Cup before listening to offers for Just. The man was phenomenal. His link up play with Wood was beautiful and they showed NZ deserve to be there.

As others have said, I couldn’t believe how much space they gave Wood on the high ball. Clearly intentional but they didn’t close him down well afterwards. I just hope he scores a World Cup goal. He’s an unreal servant of the NZ team and goes above and beyond.

Credit to Bazeley who I’ve criticised a lot previously. Everything came together today.

Crocombe almost losing the ball to the man behind him was amateur stuff but he regained composure to his credit.

Stamenic was immense, Bindon solid when he came on, and I thought McCowatt played better for us than he has in a long time.

Watch a replay... McCowatt was excellent. He dropped deep regularly to get on the ball and found pockets of space regularly... and he puts in a shift defensively too.

Easily his best game for NZ against decent opposition.

I think Baz used him correctly... as a defensive 10, who looks to setup counters which is his club role.

Such a great game! We rode our luck at times.

Pros -
Just looked amazing - great to have someone else that can score!
Wood held up the ball so well.
McCowatt did a lot of hard work.
Bell and Marko were solid in the middle.
We have players like Bindon and Thomas coming off the bench!
There was some great passing and controlling the tempo! Very impressive.

Cons
- Surman needs to pass the damn ball a bit earlier. Nearly caught 3 times just walking it up the pitch.
- Payne looked a bit too slow and the crossing was average. What other options do we have?
- We should have made subs earlier! Not sure why we waited so long for fresh legs.
- Croc a bit lucky today. Made some silly mistakes - but solid overall I guess.
- Cacace not at his best yet. Shame he's coming into this a bit cold..

He was tidy on the ball, worked hard etc, but he just simply does not offer enough in an attacking sense for the position he plays in our formation, he hasn't for a long time. I honestly think he'd be better as a 6 in our formation than one of our three 10s.

It was quite novel having Chris Wood actually on the ball and involved in a game of consequence.

You know he's good but you dont actually get to see that display of being a class above when hes in the all whites jersey.

Today was a real treat and I hope we can continue this throughout the tourney.

Agree with Rock Hopper.  I have seen Wood turn out for the AWs before, but today was the first time in a long time (since WC 2010?)  that I saw him playing as a key pivot enabling others, not getting flustered, and avoiding any unnecessary challenges. True class.

Please write out 100x "Ben Old is currently an LB for the AWs, not a left side attacker".

Definitely at this WC, Old suits coming on for Libby around 60 mins, noting Cacace has barely played the last few months, and this WC is being played at a high pace/intensity. Being an up & done full back is tough work.

Old has played the whole season in France as a LB, and reportedly an excellent one.

But his 'final product' stats in France (assists, short/long ball accuracy, option taking in the final 1/3 etc etc) are poor. They remain his big work on. In comparison McCowatt has just come off a season of 11 goals & 5 assists in the Danish Superliga. It's a no contest.

McC has scored against Sweden in Stockholm. Ireland in Dublin. He's due a goal for the AWs verus a non OFC nation. Fingers crossed it's in the next few weeks.

Old's pace you feel is going to be really handy in our remaining games as players tire in the 2nd half. Maybe more handy on D and covering, than on attack.

So proud of our guys. Reading the European football press this morning made me even more proud.
Comments such as "best match of the tournement so far" and "NZ team stacked with talent scores two beautiful goals in thriller" etc
Even the sometimes cynical French press who almost never mention NZ football were full of praise for the way NZ played.
The Just Wood combo were brilliant. Staminac had a great game and McCowatt did a ton of work.
Only negatives for me were at the back. Cocrombe had a stinker with a few bad lapses. Cacace is not 100% he was sruggling at times on defense and was nowhere to be seen for the cross. Old should have on earlier. Boxhall too is not 100% either. Interestingly Crocombe, Cacace and Boxhall all have just come back from long layoffs.
Bindon and Paulsen for me next match

There's no perfect solution to our attacking midfield woes, I know Old hasnt been playing primarily as an attacking player in recent times but I still think he would be more effective for us than McCowatt. Just his sheer pace creates panic in defenses and more space for the likes of Wood, Just & Singh to exploit.

I'd rather put Thomas in instead of McCowatt but Thomas looked a long way from his best today when he came on... he's just not close enough to full fitness.

And McCowatt scoring vs Sweden was a full 3 years ago now (to the day in fact), it has no relevance now.

Interesting thing for me is that our strength is now through the middle - through Stamenic, Just, Singh - and not out wide. The normal All Whites way of playing is crosses from wide and hope for the big guy to head it in - we didn't see much of that today.

This is possibly the first game NZ has ever played on a world stage where people praised our football and not just our grit.

I'm not a big McCowatt fan, but I thought he did quite decent today in a tough role.

I think it still has some relevance. The knowledge that you can score against some of these bigger teams outside OFC.

Not many of our players had done it more than once, prior today. Wood, Garbs, McCowatt and Kosta (about 10 years apart) maybe the only ones.

McC does have a quality long range shot. Got a number of goals from distance this season for Silkeborg. You could see him on a few occasions move across the field looking for an opening to let fly. Got one off but it was too weak. It's in his locker.

McCowatt was 4th= in the Danish Superliga Golden Boot standings, and Silkeborg didn't have a good season. He flies under the radar a bit. I optimistically feel he's due for the AWs. Garbs terrible misfortune, Callum M's opportunity.

The Egyptians are obviously going to focus primarily on Wood and Just now.

My ratings with the reasons

Gk Is an absurd.  Good long ball accuracy,  but he aint my kind of keeper being a veteran, never commanded the BOX.  5

Back line there Is a mistake in both goals from Cacace AND Just or McCowatt, AND the second he should have pressured their right back who should play football in Brazil! Since Brazil dont have proper full backs. Center backs , Boxall was better with experiences but both got caught in 2-2  Surman nerds máster faster decisión AND pronto.  Payne Is a right back....he should have been booked
Payne Box Surman Cacace all 5,

Midfielders almost won the match!  Ditto this Just should have coveredtheir right back in 2&2,

Bell 7
Stamenic 8
McCowatt 7
Just 8
Singh 6

Wood 9

Thomas 7
Old 7
Elliot 6
Bindon N/R
Randall N/E

COACH,  he should have replaced Singh earlier,

Super rapt being at that game last night but we really really really need to do something to stop teams scoring headers from crosses. The amount of times I've seen that happen to us over the last few years is painful.

Baz was a decent defender so I hope he spends the next week working on stopping that as that's easily the weakest part of our game now.
