It seems weird also how many young keepers he has called just to sit on the bench: Sail, Crocombe, Tzanev and now Woud. Why would you do that when we already have Marinovic, Gleeson, Moss and Williams?

Williams and Moss both establishing themselves at new clubs, and with Moss new season about to start. Neither will unset Marinovic, so see Hudsons rationale to observe a younger keeper in training.

What if Marinovic breaks his arm in the next couple of weeks? Do you honestly think that not having the guy who's the actual number 2 (whoever that is) involved at this stage of the campaign is a good idea?

Hudsons reasons for not picking Moss explained in this article

https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/nz-teams/9737...

I know what Hudson said. That wasn't the point of my question.

What does everyone think they talk about for these 5-6 hours?

I will lead with the first two ideas.

1: Woods scored a good goal against Spurs today in the premier league. He must be in the team.

2: Reid played well today but was a bit ginger after that tackle in the second half. May mean he pulls out of the squad?

Does anyone know how much this phoney earns?

Maybe using the internet/fax etc to try and find some footage of your good mate Marinovic, when he was playing in that German 'pub league' AP.

Heavy sarcasm. Marinovic was too good a player to be playing 4th Div in Germany. But NZF coaching staff would spend a fair amount of time watching players in the lower profile leagues, not our big name players who are certain selections. As they should be doing, as their job.

I imagine Hudson and his staff would have spent a fair amount of time watching video of say someone like Nikko Boxall (a guy who must be on AWs fringes). They would and should know far more about what level he is consistently playing at, than any of us. Again that's their job, but do get feeling they are more organised in that regard than in Ricki's day. Though Herbert of course juggled two coaching jobs.

Incorrect, he initially selected  Stefan solely on a recommendation. Do you think they video these pub leagues? You are giving him too way too much credit and as scandavia is not even on his map with a pin I don't think he has discovered any video of Nikko

You can watch full games of Regionalliga football on YouTube.... So yes, they do video these "pub leagues".

There's also highlights of the Finnish Veikauslliga on there so presumably it wouldn't be too hard to get hold of match footage of Nikko either

May well have been recommended, but do you really think he would have picked a guy for international football without seeking some footage from somewhere?!   NZ only has about say 20-30 adult players plying their trade overseas, not 300. Ain't a huge workload to watch match videos of these special few

and surely to have such strong opinions about the quality of the Scandinavian and South African leagues he has to have watched them a little you'd think?

Unfortunately copyrigh claims prevent me from putting up highlights from the match v Japan at Confeds 03, but this blast past from the past brings a bit of history to the fixture:

Hudson on Radio Sport, previewing the Japan game. Is there a second match planned against Japan? I can't work out what he's on about when he's asked about a 'pass mark' for this match.

there is not (Japan play Haiti next week.

It's like he's setting up a November scenario, but ignoring that in November they will be away second, so, for eg, a 0-0 draw is better than a 1-1 in the first leg.

What an awesome night of football on Sky TV Friday night.

Maybe the  first time we've had two national football teams broadcast live at the same time:

Entrée: 9.45 pm A-League Season Opener Melbourne City vs. Brisbane Roar

11.30 pm All Whites vs. Japan

12.30 am NZ u-17 vs. Turkey (FIFA u-17 World Cup India)

CNN's World Sport show last night was as if it was made for All Whites supporters:

(1) Preview of tomorrow's South American qualifiers (with mention of NZ as opponent for the 5th place team) and a Cavani interview.

(2) Feature on fans of Japan's national team looking towards tomorrow's All Whites friendly.

[3) A preview of the Socceroos play-off vs Syria with a Troisi interview

The full feature on Japan's national team fans can be seen here:

I really hope that the starting XI are not a shadow side for next month.  Really worried about Ingham, Colvey and maybe Durante.  Hopefully the first two especially will be riding the pine in November.
