I personally think the NZ football culture,  and even general culture (with the possible exception of the ABs) thrives on being an underdog. We love this back to the wall, heroic last stand stuff. Every single one of these BS mindgames from Peru will just feed that mentality. Even against Mexico without Reid we actually did alright in a similar situation for most of the first half IIRC. If we get the first goal it's all on. And Mexico was probably more intimidating, at least in the stadium just for the sheer size of it.

FIRE THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!!!

For all the brave ones.  Stick $100 on NZ to win 1-0 and get odds of 31 to 1. Nice little Christmas present.

Sending fighter jets over the teams hotel??   That is pretty shocking, I think there is going to

be some real interesting ref's decisions in this game.

That's a bit pathetic imo. He asked for a hostile environment in NZ, which he didn't get, one single bit. The only thing that could be construed as hostile was not allowing the peruvians to bring in musical instruments, but this clearly isn't retaliation for that. We even had our annual legal fireworks period in the week before the game, so there were plenty around, yet no one did anything like this.

I think the precedent set by NZ's lack of hostility around the first leg totally overrules this justification.

Anyways, who cares, this will just make it sweeter if we win. And if we lose, meh, 10th beats 122nd, slow clap for that then.

Us kiwis are too nice to get into that hostility shark lol, I just wanted to have a great time at the game in Wellington which I did and make some Peruvian friends which I did :)

If he's anything near as quality as the ref in the Australia vs Honduras game, I'll be excited

We also don't have any jets in our air force - don't think a couple of soundsair cessna's over the bolton quite has the same effect

Oscar Ruggeri wc champion with Argentina in 86 and runner up in 90 has stated that the most scared he has felt is the playoff with Australia for the 94 wc

Pressure will be massive for Peru today

As a peruvian fan i can't wait till it's 5pm and the game is over. Regardless of the score waiting for the game is excrutiating I just want it to be over so ibcan focus on other things in life haha. I think it's been 124 qualifying games since our last wc. I hope the wait ends tonight. But we shall see

So how much is too much with regards to disruption (fireworks, jets etc), and are we supposed to just accept it as being part of it?

Surely there is a line where FIFA would have to step in?

If NZF had got the Hotel where the Peruvians were staying the night before the game to have fire drills every hour through the night for example?

Just curious as to how far it can go.

given that FIFA has never stepped in at any point of any south American qualifirs that I can recall and the shenanigans are pretty much as one would expect. One would think the line has not been crossed yet...

I think busses have been attacked in the past and nothing happened apart from maybe a fine. Pitch invasions usually end up in teams having to play in empty stadiums for next game

Just wait, I bet the bus breaks down, and the players will have to walk to the hotel.  There has to be a fineline, where FIFA steps in.

It's South America. No one should be surprised and one would hope that includes our players.

If they weren't prepared for Peruvian shenanigans, they only have themselves to blame.

As others have said given the right frame of mind it should steal the All Whites along the lines of 'bring all your bullshark, on the field it's still 11 v 11 and we are massive underdogs and loving it!'

Plenty of nerves here, a little bit hoping we don't get hammered and have a result to be proud of and a little fudge yeah we've got a chance here. Loving the antisipation.

A couple of beers before the game and plenty during :)

I'm not complaining about anything the Peruvians are doing tbh, their footballing culture and supporter culture is hewn from the South American competitions from the National team level down. If NZ were Chile or Argentina, they'd be getting exactly the same serve from them right now.

Martin was a dipshark by highlighting their hostility, knowing it would get picked up by their media and spun into a huge story. It also lets them say that 'well, you asked for it'.

He was an even bigger dipshark asking New Zealand, a country with a footballing culture that is barely out of the petri-dish, to animate itself into some sort of impersonation of that South American rivalry and hostility that accompanies the game.

If they'd come over and NZ had presented the friendly, open, cheerful face it did to Peruvians over last weekend - then our reputation would have been a lot better in Peru than it probably is. The supporters undid a lot of the damage Martin did last weekend, shame we couldn't stop him stopping them bringing in instruments.

AND THEY'D STILL HAVE DONE EVERYTHING THEY ARE DOING.

Jets flying by, native healers putting curses, fireworks. I bet the players are loving this - it's 100% proper do or die stuff.

Vamos Nueva Zelanda!

O yes and certain human rights lawyers from Peru sending weeping messages of horror that we would stoop to low ways to welcome their team. The mind games started right back at that point.

I know it's off topic, but I seriously hope the intercontinental play-offs will be a thing of the past one day.

Much like in the European qualifiers, if there are playoffs for the extra spot it should be within the confederation - minimises logistics and other dramas.

Hopefully the future editions will allow for that.

Consider that they could have CONMEBOL done as two groups of five teams each as per current total of ten teams, give the top two from each group automatic entry, and have the third teams from both groups play off for the fifth spot, instead of picking on OFC winners.

Edit: they could seed them by rankings, or automatically put Brazil and Argentina in different groups. Poor Uruguay.
