Extremely frustrated but we shouldn't be. Easily the better team. We've tried something different at the end and it let them in the game. Friendly is the right time to do it.
We've been good all night and were just on the wrong side of the luck tonight. We've missed some good chances and they got a lucky one through a forest of legs. We've certainly played above our FIFA ranking. Can't be too sorry about that.
Man if only we could actually score goals. Wood concerns me sometimes, not a big game player and every match for NZ is a big game. We don't have any other options though.
Great work dominating the game for the most part, really need the finishing touch now.
We play long to Kosta there, one mini to go. Not his fault, but he can’t deputise Wood. If it’s Mata, we hold that ball more often, win it or a throw. Or even Ott or someone…
Kosta has been great, but he’s not that quick anymore and he can’t be asked to win aerial ball. Maybe he can hold up and start counters with ball to feet, but we couldn’t get him that. We can’t ask him to be our back up 9 playing this way.
A combination of 2 things, out of season and mostly its just the difference in speed between the A League and the level the other guys are playing at. He’ll be right by WC time.Monto
kwlap
Rufer is just a fraction to slow on the ball everytime.
Feels like this has been a rinse and repeat for last few years.. make one or two good chances, fail to convert, then struggle to make many more when the opposition adjusts, then concede a late sucker punch when the bench comes and leg get tired

If every match for NZ is a big game and he is by far and away our all time leading goalscorer then how is he not a big game player?
If only…we had Libby and Marko. Phh! Press 90 minutes, attack 90 minutes.
But our substitutes were a little disjointed, and not just with the quality.
I think Bazeley needs one of McCowatt or Just (or Garbett or Singh, if they’re competing for similar spots) to play 90 minutes. So far none of them can. The plan was McCowatt to hold us together. Good news is that in the World Cup, gingers crossed Thomas might play closer to 90.

Wood... not a big game player? I could go on about some of the goals he's scored at crucial times against massive teams in the PL... not a big game player? holy shark.
Dam! This always happens against aussie. They always come home strong. We lost control after thomas came off. Aussie brought on some good talent though. Ballard is a good player.
Sucks playing the much better footy and not getting a result. Especially against this lot, even the draw would've been huge for us. Really hope we can get something out of the Auckland match, we're so close.

It’s also Popovic 101. Gum up the works and pinch one late on.

Well maybe not every match for us. PI teams excluded of course and the odd match against even or lower ranked teams.
I guess I mean more the matches where we are really up against it. Not sure out team composition really suits him all that well in these matches. He's absolutely our best options though, we need to feed him better. Hopefully we can do that with Cacace and old out there going forward.

the delivery is not quite right. and we don't create a lot of openings. our wide guys don't stretch the field and we don't get crosses in.
EPL teams have a definted method of attack where timing and quality is important and the right players are almost mechanically making the right runs.
it's just a different type and standard of football. it's not unusual to see it not connect with a solo 9. if this can be rememdied then we will be a heck of a team.
Fudge me that last 30 was horrendous. We have a strong 15 but that’s about it. After that you start bringing on the likes of Kosta, Elliot and Rufer who aren’t even close to this level on and it’s just an absolute mess.
I’d really like to see a diamond formation with Wood and Just up top. Our wingers do absolute fudge all everytime (Old and McCowatt) and I think we need to utilise our strengths through the middle.
Suprised no one mentioned Thomas pulling a cruff turn to get out of close pressure mid way through the first half and bamboozling half the aussie team in the process. What a player.

Well, I’ll say this. I think he’s an opening bat, rather than a finisher/closer type.
He prefers to attack early and score early.
At the end of the last two Forest seasons he’s gone missing for a stretch of games- 5-6. The first season he did Forest were facing relegation and needed goals! And if he’d finished strong last season he’d have scored 30 odd and Forest would have finished second or third.
But I think he’s best attacking strong in the first half and getting the job done then. That’s how it goes when he’s on song.
I don’t think he’s a clutch player who scores more in the last 20. That’s often super subs and fast break merchants or Harry Maguire.
Edit: and that was our story today. Two good shots in and our second best chance after the 1 v 1 Payne is as fast as Elanga, but his cross was wayward. You’d back Wood to score that break 7 times out of ten at least.

I agree. I just wonder if we have the players to make that happen enough? Maybe, I certainly hope so.
I'm not sure what we can do if we can't do that though?

Again bringng on aLeague players still on their preseason against an aussie team with players right into their seasons is going to cause issues. It does expose our depth but individually it's hard to criticize the players who have had basically 3 months off.
Overall thoughts - Boxall imperious. Payne a bit shaky but he is early into his preseason and still looks our best RB option for me. FdV overall solid despite deserving a red card, hope his injury isnt too bad...
Thomas and Bell good in midfield, Rufer was atrocious, he has gone backwards fast since the Victory semifinal. McCowatt our weakest attacker tonight, just doesnt deliver in white in general. Hope he doesnt start on Tuesday. I would give a Rogerson a go. He deserves it. Old hasnt ever impressed for the All Whites either.
Wood needs a goal next week - beyond a joke at this point that that doesnt score in the big games for us, and you cant say it is because he is lacking service anymore.
We were the better team, and 8 out of 10 times we win that match.
Compared to last time we played Aussie we have come on leaps and bounds. Depth an issue and McCowatt still struggling at international level.
I think that’s what you get with McCowatt. He provides assists and goals in moments. Came close to one with Wood. That’s his game. He also has an accurate radar on shots from the top of the box usually. He runs and defends. But he’s not a 90 minute player pressing at the intensity he did. I’m sure Just and Singh wouldn’t have looked good if they played 90 either. He was spent and deserved to be subbed. He didn’t and he had some bad touches when he was out on his feet. And that’s what we’re remembering.
I wonder if the plan with McCowatt was to use him for the full 90 tonight and bench him next match? Surely not though as even though he needed to come off his press was excellent in the first 50 or so.
Overall, the team is showing actual positive progress over a run of games which hasn't happened for as long as I have been following (world cup run 2010 an outlier).

Doesn't he score off about 30% of his big chances in the EPL? Payne puts that pretty simple cross in the right place, he does get the goal.
But a hugely encouraging performance. We owned them for 65 mins. It's only that likes of Wood & Thomas are on managed workloads that allowed them back in.
Back 4 is definitely the way to go. The Aussie feed said that in the Socceroos last 60 odd games, only Japan one time had had more possesion than the AWs. That includes the likes of Argentina at the Qatar WC. Some crazy stat like that. May have been a HT stat??
They are missing the likes of Ryan, Souttar & their captain Irvine (big out for them), but I never thought the AWs could dominate so much. Definitely wrong on that front.
A 2-0 win at Mt Smart is definitely possible, and then we get this trophy.
Credit to Irankunda. The only player to match Boxall today. Was convinced Boxall was going to muscle the ball into the box. Did for one, Irankunda somehow held him off and won a throw.
Might see other players in Auckland? Only Rogerson and Randall not used in the end right?
Might see Old and Rogerson start in Auckland possibly? Depending how various knocks and injuries hold up.
