Interesting looking at the team squad compared to the tour of South America:

5 defenders are missing from the SA tour:
Kris Bouckenooghe (Red Star Waasland),
Che Bunce (Coventry City),
Danny Hay (Waitakere United),
Noah Hickey (Unattached),
David Mulligan (Sc**thorpe United)

It is going to be interesting to see how this new look defence goes against wales. Its a shame Mulligan is missing, is he injured? Sc**thorpe are being promoted to the Championship for next season in England. Hope he is still involved in their squad.

Not much change in the midfield. Only Jeff Campbell being added.

Upfront. Jarrod Smith dropping out through injury and Killen added to the squad(limited playing time likely).

Overall I think we should do ok against Wales who have had their own injury and squad availablility issues. Most of their players are Championsh

I see Chris James as being our man of the match. I hope he goes well and grabs the attention of some clubs in the UK or his own Fulham first team. I am sure Chris can run rings around that old Giggs fellow. It is a great opportunity for Chris JAmes to show his class and his progress over the last couple of years.

Bring it on!!!

Overall they are a decent side but not unbeatable even for the All Whites. Sure on paper they are a better side. Mostly made up of Championship players topped off nicely with a couple of class players.

The All Whites pulling off a draw or a win would be a upset for sure. But it isn't impossible.

Enjoy!

The word I have is that Wales are using this as a development game.  The stars will play cameos to get a crowd in for the dosh but the main playing roster is untried and trial players especially from the Championship.

So, we should have a chance (0-0 anyone?)

William Hill has best odds at 2-0 (5.5 to 1),
then 1-0,
then 2-1
then 3-0
3-1to Wales
and finally at 12 to 1 NZ to win 1-0.

I wouldn't count out Andy Boyens. I've been seeing him a lot for Toronto FC in the MLS this year and he just keeps getting better every game. Maybe the All-Whites will use him in the attack like Toronto does, as his size is great for headers.

Wales only beat San Marino 3-0. We can do better than them. They only have a population of 28,000. Giggs played 73 minutes. Bellamy and Sean Davies played the whole game.

Bellamy backed for Wales revival
<!-- S BO --><!-- S IIMA -->
Toshack needs Bellamy firing on all cylinders
<!-- E IIMA -->Date: Saturday, 26 May
Kick-off: 1500 BST
Venue: Racecourse, Wrexham
Watch: S4C
Listen: Live on BBC Radio Wales, Radio Cymru & online <!-- S ILIN -->
<!-- E ILIN -->

<!-- S SF -->John Toshack says Craig Bellamy will shrug off his Liverpool pain when he leads Wales' line against New Zealand.

The striker stayed on the bench in the Champions League final loss to AC Milan and finds his Reds future in doubt.

"If Craig played two hours in Athens he'd have been here wanting to play for us, that's the way he is," said Toshack ahead of Saturday's Racecourse match.

"He's such an important player for us and we need him playing before next week's game with the Czech Republic." <!-- E SF -->

<!-- E I -->

The Wales manager, who established himself as a striking great for Liverpool in the '70s, would not be drawn on Bellamy's Anfield future.

"I don't know whether he will be putting himself in the shop window, you hear a lot about what might happen with him," said Toshack.

"Straight after a big cup final defeat like that things do get said. It is Liverpool who will decide.

Wales captain Ryan Giggs
<!-- E I -->

"I don't know whether he should have got more of a chance in the final, but Liverpool will be very disappointed about what happened."

Bellamy will also find a sympathetic ear from his national captain and strike partner, Manchester United's Ryan Giggs.

"As a player, when you have had a disappointment you cannot wait to get it out of your system, and this international can't have come quick enough for Craig," said Giggs.

"I've just about got over our FA Cup final defeat, but we are champions and have had a great season.

"Wales have a big game against the Czechs next weekend, so hopefully by the time that is all over the big loss Craig has suffered will be eased.

"I've not had much time to talk to Craig, but he is obviously disappointed. I'm not saying whether I was though! But I managed to commiserate with him."

Giggs insists that the game with New Zealand in Wrexham gives his side the perfect chance to prepare for a difficult Euro 2008 qualifier with Karel Bruckner's team at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

"It is all part of the warm-up for the Czechs, that's a game we must win and having felt we should have beaten them away from home, there is now no greater motivation," he said.

Nabbed from the Pink 'Un - Norwich

26 May 2007
Earnie has rival for Wales place

Canaries hit-man Robert Earnshaw completes his rehabilitation from injury this afternoon - and has issued a hands off warning to another East Anglian after his Wales international shirt.

Earnshaw is expected to get at least 45 minutes when John Toshack's men take on New Zealand at Wrexham's Racecourse ground - his first international match since November.

Despite missing three months of the season with a serious groin injury, Earnshaw still finished the season with 19 Championship goals for Norwich. But while he was out Toshack went hunting for replacements - and came up with Freddy Eastwood.

The Southend striker discovered a Llanelli-born grandfather, but was then forced to withdraw from the Wales squad with a back problem.

But his shadow is still there - although Earnshaw insists he is unperturbed at the prospect of another rival for a starting place.

No I'm not worried by Freddy, he's welcome, he said.

The more players we've got in our squad the better it is for us.

Freddy's a good player. He scored goals in League One and has scored goals in the Championship - which is good. I've been impressed every time I've played against him.

It was tough on Southend to get relegated. I don't know Freddy really, but you would think, like any player, he wants to play at the highest level, but it would of course be up to him if he does move on.

But I'll be happy to see Freddy join up with us, the more good players we can add to the squad the better it is for Wales.

Over the last two years, a lot of players have come in and out of the squad.

There's been a lot of debuts, lots of players to get used to which has been hard, but it's a good thing. It's like the next generation coming through and that's quite exciting.

Earnshaw's absence clearly played a part in City's poor season - he had 17 goals on his card before injury struck on the Colney training grounds in January, adding two more in the final five games of the season.

The second half of the season was disappointing for me. Getting an injury like that when things are going so well is the worst thing that can happen, he said.

I'd scored a few goals going up to Christmas and into January, then suddenly you're out for three months. It's tough. You just feel you want to get back playing and enjoying your football again.

The Welsh lads were having a joke about the fact I missed all that time and was still up near the top goal scorers in the division. Who knows what could have happened?

But since I returned near the end of the season I've just been trying to get as many minutes on the pitch as I could and trying to get a few more goals to finish off on a bit of a high.

Wales have a battle on their hands to qualify for Euro 2008 and must win beat the Czech Republic at the Millennium Stadium on June 2.

Earnshaw is just keen to play his part.

I missed a few Wales game and some big ones, he said. I did find that frustrating. The way things have gone now means it's going to be very hard for us to qualify, but that's the way it goes.

I'm looking forward to New Zealand and then the Czech game. We've got nothing to lose against the Czechs now really. It's a game we very much want to win. If we can get that little bit of luck, get a couple of goals, who knows, we'll see what happens.

Earnshaw will partner Craig Bellamy in attack, the Liverpool star having been on the bench in Wednesday's Champions League final in Athens.

Norwich goalkeeping target Danny Coyne starts in goal while there is a place for former Canaries midfielder Carl Robinson.

Cardiff's teenage full-back Chris Gunter will make his full debut against New Zealand in a defence that also includes West Ham's Danny Gabbidon who has not played since early January due to a groin operation.

Wales team: Coyne (Burnley), Gunter (Cardiff), Gabbidon, J Collins (both West Ham), Ricketts (Hull), S Davies (Fulham), Fletcher (Crystal Palace), Robinson (Toronto), Giggs (Man Utd), Bellamy (Liverpool), Earnshaw (Norwich).

I've spent my life listening to Kiwis rant on about how they are so much better at rugby than the Welsh. Now for the first time I am able to sit back and watch in quiet confidence a game the Welsh are definitely better than the Kiwis. Don't flatter yourself lads, you aren't better than San Marino.
If the All Whites had put out their full team, then it may have been closer, but as the All Blacks always pick themselves to beat the Welsh by 50, I'm picking the Welsh by 5 with the lineup the All Whites have put out. Of course the Welsh could take off the stars after 45 minutes and that might make it closer.
Mind you the Welsh C team went pretty close to beating the Aussies tonight, so I shouldn't be too cocky.

I am too happy right now to comment any further. I am just going to reflect on this for a bit.

In fact I should as well. Because I didn't give them much hope of getting a result like this.

Oh dear.

Daikiwi, you should know better than anyone that Welsh football is cursed (even NZ has been to the World Cup more recently than 1958) and that a result like this was always possible.

Anybody got the phone number of the Ukrainian FA?

Gotta say I (and the commentors and mostly everyone else) did not hold out too much hope for the boys but they played with some passion and tenacity - you could see the class of welsh with snappy interchanging, passes and Bellamys 1st goal was clinical etc but maybe they thought the kiwis would roll over.....without getting too carried away, they proved everyone wrong - $1.30 for Wales at the TAB must have pulled in some surprising losers this morning.

i think we were very good down the middle of the park and despite clearly carrying a couple of players, we worked our socks off to grind out a great result.

bertos looked better than anything wales had (giggs and bellamy aside), boyens looked at least a football league championship standard and sigmund was not too far off.  and as for shane smeltz; he certainly proved a few doubters wrong!

It was the right weekend to do it.  With Super 14 finished and the AB's not playing, NZ sports news is limited.

We might even make that headline seeing as the game was televised so there is footage available.

Fair play you should all be proud of the All Whites today. They played with character and composure and fully deserved their draw. Smeltz had a game out of the bag and very nearly stole it.
As I said at the foot of my post, I should have taken a cue from the Welsh-Aussie rugby game. But then on paper it did look a mismatch. However the games are played on grass and, while Wales looked good in stages, they paid for an awfully slow start, with both Gabbidon and Collins looking very much like they had not played much. They were much better in a 3-5-2.
While Bellamy was the player of the game, Earnshaw really has gone backwards since he left Cardiff for the big leagues. He was off side all day and his shooting was atrocious.
The Kiwi lads never stopped trying and none on that performance wouldn't disgrace a Phoenix shirt.
Sigmund was close to the All Whites best, apart from losing Bellamy for the Welsh opening goal.
Paston made one fantastic save off Ledley, and made just that one error which Bellamy should have scored his hattrick.
So well done All Whites.
The only good thing for me is that Wales are renowned for having a shocker at the Racecourse and then bouncing back for a stormer at the Millennium. So look out for a bouncing check or two next week.

Good to see a few doom merchants stepping back to recognise an excellent performance by New Zealand this morning. Pre-match comical guestimations of 4-0 and 6-0 scorelines will be making some people rethink a little before they type. This was one of the best open 45 minutes I've seen the All Whites play for some time (I think the first 45 mins they played against Brazil in the Jalisco Stadium, Guadalajara in 1999 would still rank as the top half I have seen them play, in relation to the ranking of the opposition). The second half was a little different and Wales did dominate but we defended pretty well; Paston's little venture outside the box aside:-)
But I think we made John Toshack revisit his plans during the first half. I believe he expected to let Bellers, Giggs and Earnshaw run riot, get a few goals ahead and then drag them off and try some other combinations. Well, Bellamy lasted the distance but Giggs and Earnshaw were subbed and that is great credit to the All Whites that they made the Welsh keep there better players on longer than expected. Earnshaw didn't really fire but he was out for three months with a serious leg injury so he's on the comeback trail. You can clearly see the quality players in the Welsh side but what impressed me was how the All Whites really powered into them in the first 20 minutes or so. This match will have exceeded expectations and Ricki Herbert is to be commended for just accepting he didn't have his top side available and getting on with playing the game. I didn't see much of the ball-play between defenders and we attempted to attack quite often. It was good seeing defenders run forward with the ball and then offload a pass rather than play footsies across the back which has been a common ploy in recent All White sides.
I've got to put my hand up and say this is the first time that Tim Brown has impressed me. I've been critical of his performances in the past but today I felt he stood up and showed he is worthy of wearing an All White shirt. Good onya Tim. Keep that standard up and the Phoenix will only benefit! The only player who seemed anonymous was our friend Jeremy Christie. As pointed out by the match commentators, he was largely invisible all game and perhaps he could have been dragged off and someone else given a go. Still, the rest of the side seemed to be on top of their own games individually, and therefore collectively they earned the result they deserved. And we should also remember that Wales actually had to comeback and equalise twice after we'd twice gone ahead. What should really be interesting is 1) will any of the unattached players score a contract based on this match and 2) how many places will New Zealand rise up the FIFA rankings. There points system is quite an exercise in mathematics but scoring goals away from home earns a high points allocation as does getting a result against higher ranked opposition so I would expect us to come out of this game quite nicely. We just need to improve on this performance and look to push ourselves into that top 70, which will benefit our players looking for overseas contracts. Yep, I'm buzzing after watching that performance. It's going to be a good week, especially as I have a Welsh workmate:-)))

Anyone impressed with Mark Elrick filling in for Dennis Katsanos as the football anchor? I thought he was nervous as hell and too figgity - waving his hands around like a lunatic and what is with the pen in your hand dude???

Also he certainly didn't enlighten me with any knowledge on the game. I thought they'd be better off ditching him and getting Hazza to do all the talking.
