Hi all,

A little something brought to my attention today plastered one of these  on my face!

The final placings of NZ women's sports teams at the Olympics:

Hockey - play-off for 11th place

Basketball - 11th

Football - 10th (at the first time of trying)

Now if memory serves, the basketball and hockey teams were guaranteed rock-solid members of this NZ Olympic squad, were they not? And our girls had to plead their case to be part of same?

Seems to me like the wrong team was doing the pleading!

Methinks some funding cuts need to be made to these under-achieving codes, and said funds redirected into women's football, one of the few sports at the Olympics in which NZ is making genuine progress on the world stage.

To back this up, I'll mark your cards now - anticipate a strong showing from the Junior Ferns at the FIFA U20 WWC Finals in Chile in November and December, the draw for which takes place on September 14. I'm quietly confident they'll do rather well at this event ...

Now to get women's football into the Commonwealth Games, and give our girls another avenue via which international experience can be gained ahead of WWC Finals and Olympic Women's Football Tournaments.

Cheers,

JR

Women's football at the Commonwealth games seems like a very good idea

The Hockey woman have had a schocking games, they will admit that and it will put a lot of their funding at risk. I think the Womens BBall team were picked for the same reason the Football Ferns were, largely to build for the future. They only had two players from the Athens game 4 years ago.
So yes while the Footballers have done well, their has to be a little perspective
