So much for moving to Auckland. I see that Auckland won 2 and lost 4 in the last seasons Womens National League. Then the star player (Palmer) never got a look in for the NZ team which was announced shortly after probably because she was not from Auckland.

Under-20 internationals didn't play in last year's women's league, and under-17 internationals didn't play for half of it. I have no idea why Palmer didn't get a look in for the NZ "A' team, but I imagine not being based in or able to get to Auckland and be part of the regular training programme is part of it. This is also football, a sport where the power of a team vs the power of individuals is as great as it is anywhere (and Auckland were a shambles on that front, not helped by the late naming of that U-20 squad).

Well it looks like the power of the individual (Erceg) is far greater than the power of the team

That's half the problem, the women's league is only 6 games long...

Can't we just go out the back and grab some more money from the tree to make it more meaningful?

I can see 2 areas where NZF could help themselves

1: Lawyers fees on pointless appeals ($500k)

2: Sky Sport coverage ($300k)

Thats a lot of coin that could be used smarter

To be fair the pointless appeals had to happen with the pressure at the time.  Everyone was saying if it was fruitless, NZF owed it to the players to try.  They would have been damned either way.

And the Sky Sport coverage is probably one of the inevstments I think they did right.  If they want the league to pay for itself they need fans interested in watching.

I'm not saying I disagree with you, maybe the we cheated bit, as I suspect it was stupidity not malice that resulted in it.  But all of the sports personalities and ex All Whites were saying the opposite in the news at the time, so again, they were fudgeed either way.

Better to be fudgeed owning up to a mistake for free, than being fudgeed paying a bunch of money on a pointless appeal.

So the elephant in the room is Professional Services.

I can only think of prostitutes when I see those two words

The only other option would be lawyer bills for the Wynnegate

Can anyone elaborate?

Assuming lawyers. It's highest in the last two year. Might be a bit of contracting work too (comms or Peter Taylor europeans couting junket).

Personnel expense is only trending in one direction. In fact doubled in the last four years.

That is staggering for any organisation and would usually mean a business is thriving

Does this mean

1: it is thriving and we have had to hire many more staff

Or

2: Pay rises/banking bonuses for the likes of Martin and Hudson?

Surely someone in the media needs to be asking these questions

I haven't seen any data on staff growth, but I believe that the Whole of Football Plan and Fit for Football have created a lot of jobs in grassroots football. For example, each region has a dedicated Fit for Football coordinator employed by NZF and Futsal has grown significantly in recent years. The boys at the top may be on significant wages, but I'd be surprised if it accounts for much of the increase.

What the fudge is this shark from a NZF release

While Putin has been President of Russia for three successive terms. He has enjoyed high domestic approval ratings during his career, and received extensive international attention as one of the world’s most powerful leaders.

Factually incorrect. Russian law prevents anyone from holding the presidency for more than 2 consecutive terms, so he swapped jobs with his primary minister for one term (2008-12). The rest of it is technically true though...

True or not I do not understand for the life of me why it needs to be said and why it's in a press release from NZ football.  If it's an attempt at big noting how important they are they have missed the target by a fudgeing mile.

Looks like NZF have been writing Putin's wikipedia page as well as Hudson's. Either that or they blatantly plagiarised from wikipedia.

There's probably some sort of contractual obligation to not represent the host country in a negative light.

That or Martin doesn't want to munch on a polonium sandwich.

Sure - but the solution there is to not say anything, not to post a bullshark wankfest.

When they moaned that it was going to cost 800k and then it became 2 million - allegedly, I was astounded. As you may have seen in the other thread, I did costings on Webjet. Sure it was only a rough marker but it was substantially less than what these guys said. Perhaps if the administrators all caught coach class and the players all caught Business class, it might work out great. Or even if it was only the players whom got first class and the rest in business class.....

As for making it living hell for Peru, what a stupid thing to say. Martin should have said..."We'd like all the fans to recreate the same atmosphere as there was here for the Bahrain game". It was a brilliant night for everyone including the visiting fans. I hope to see this again. I have respect for a country that is rated 10th in the world. It might be flattering but they have played a lot of games.

Where did the $2 million figure come from, was it NZF or just the internet?

Doing a straight comparison with Webjet doesn't really give you a proper comparison. Flights from here to Lima will all be the same as they will travel together, but when they leave they will be going to UK, USA, Europe, Australia & NZ, then there are  costs for accommodation, meals, training facilities, insurance, player payments (for players and their clubs). With a playing squad of 22 and 10-15 support staff, it soon adds up quickly, and while FIFA does contribute a bit, its not really much in the big picture of things.

NZF should be taking who they need be it lawyers, psychiatrists, doctors, physios, whatever. They shouldn't all fly first class but they shouldn't spare expenses either.

If you are expecting people to travel 12-15 hours and then be at the absolute top of their games then business class is a no brainer.  Try doing proper video analysis when you've been stuck in cattle class for 14 hours on no sleep.  You can quibble with who needs to be there but its too simplistic to say that support staff shouldn't travel in business class - if they need to be there then they need to be there in good nick
