Andy Martin - All you expect and less
"Hello Peter, can you tell me what's needed at NZ football's grassroots?"
"Money."
"Thanks Peter. Hello Ivan, can you tell me what's needed at NZ grassroots football?"
"Promotion."
"Thanks guys."

Saw him at the Waitak Canterbury game today, he spent a lot of time speaking with the Chairmen (separately) of both Waitak (Peter Bult) and ACFC (Ivan Vuksich) in between the 4 goals on the pitch.
You would suspect that Martin would be aware that FVH is stepping out of the role and would make up his own mind. I would like to think that the issues between NZF and the Phoenix would disappear with a new CEO and outgoing FVH

Naturally, a lot of attention will be given to the outputs of the independent All Whites review that is currently underway. As mentioned in December, I expect this to very much inform our High Performance strategy and, in turn, our approach to finding a new coach for the All Whites. We are at the start of a new four-year campaign and we need to set ourselves up for success as I’m sure we all want to see New Zealand in Russia in 2018! "
I thought that open letter was pretty meh actually.
I suppose it's early days though so a bit unfair to expect anything more insightful.

Excellent article on Stuff - all the right noises
"We've got to align with the Phoenix and I'd love to see a second professional side."
+1 Football rivalry the lifeblood of the game. Look at Sydney & Melbourne.

Agree. He comes across as perfect for the job.
Sounds pretty good so far. Aiming for the right things.
He made some good points. Quietly optimistic that he is on the right track. If he can get through all the petty politics and self interest in NZ football then maybe we are headed for better days. Would love to listen in on the meeting he is having with Gareth and the Nix guys at the end of the month.
As far as the Nix goes, the Nix academy and the Wandering kids playing in the ASB should be somehow folded in together. The Nix have the $$$ and the people to run this properly. Its a tragedy that a kid like Rufer has spent the whole season doing nothing but training.
Shame that Martin was not asked about the Oceania Confed. I think most football people in NZ would agree that the game here will not advance with us playing against Vanuatu, New Cal, Solomons. The Japanese game showed where we should be.

Let's hope local football people get behind him. Any chance of getting him to take part in a YF podcast?
Martin in no rush to appoint All Whites coach

When does he sit down with the Nix? Isn't it this week, sometime?
What's the chance of getting an I/V with him on the next podcast?
They have met but no clues to what they discussed here. Just a bunch of rhetoric...

Yeah, one small kick... ;)
Wish someone would ask him
1) Why does Professional football in NZ have to take a back seat over Amateur football?.
2) Why cant the Nix's have a youth side in the ASB prem youth league? Same goes for there Res side etc.

But Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide have there (Reserve+Mixed) sides playing in the local (Amateur) competition as well as the NYL(And soon FFA Cup). Show me where FIFA says NO to that?.
If the FFA says yes to the Nix's and FIFA confirms it, Then same should apply to NZF allowing a Nix's youth side to play in its main youth competition. Its quite anti Pro football and if another NZ based A-League side was to emerge and wanted the same thing but was denied - You would have to think to yourself "Who's running NZF?".

That's what Gareth did ask Andy for: a Nix reserve side in the ASB. Next year. (listen to podcast: Telfer & GM on radiosportlive April 02)

In Oz would they not just have to sit out the 30 day stand down to qualify to the local Oz grades? Need the rules wizard in here

Oceania gave the FFA the OK to have the Nix's in the A-League, Part of that original licence had the ASB teams sign off on allowing the Nix's to play for a O-League placing (Think it was Graham Seatter's idea). But it fell through for one reason or another. However the OFC still has an invitation (From the FFA) for another OFC based team to join the A-League ( Karembeu's Oceanian 11?).
So why would they (The OFC) turn there back on the only professional football club in the region having a reserve side in NZFC or ASB prem.
I might be wrong but I think Andy has made some changes that have already become quite visible: NZF seems to be releasing more news articles then they used to encapsulating all facets of football in NZ.
I also get the impression they like Graham Seatter he wants the All Whites playing more to lift the team's profile and ranking.

Under a licence agreement between FFA + NZF and The OFC, With recognition by the AFC. Nix's are still a New Zealand Football Club.
Hence why when the knights folded that A-League licence went back to NZF Not the FFA. The owner/s still have to pay for the licence but it is a licence that is under an agreement with NZF and The OFC.
Where are the players registered? They (Welnix) pay ACC levies in NZ and (Medical Insurance levies) in Australia for the players - I'm guessing the players are registered in OZ under the FFA (+ in the AFC confederation.) Welnix is indeed a NZ company employing a team of contractors.
Well the licence use to be part owned by NZF however it was purchased outright by Terry S. When the FFA went into bat for the Nix's to get excepted into the ACL, The AFC gave its verdict AKA Nix's had to move/be in Australia and have Kiwis as imports. The AFC see it as a NZ club playing in the A-League Not as a A-League club based in NZ.
When the AFC reviewed the Asian Champions League it clearly stated the A-League is a 9 team compatition.
I believe former NZF CEO Mr Seatter knew the AFC would not accept the Nix's and it's why he had the agreement signed between them and the ASB prem sides. This agreement was also signed off on by the OFC.
Lets just hope things work out this time for the good of the game, And give hope to other NZ clubs wanting to join the A-League.
I think the AFC would like the Nix gone but FIFA backed us before when AFC said Nix gone after 15/16 seaso. the need for further talks about the recent 9 a-league licence extensions and delayed nix extension backs this. FIFA will clarify when the fax fires up again. But do NZF still hold the franchise licence? I would doubt it with the current Welnix investment. All based on hear say and reading net
I think if we win the A-League we are currently blocked fr playing AFC. But only time would tell if that would be enforce .
I will leave it there. NZF CEO has enough to sort without this.

I posted this the other day in the A League Expansion thread but it fits into this discussion as well and I can't be bothered typing out more or less the same thing again:
"As I see it, the odds of another A League team in NZ would increase considerably if the OFC and AFC agreed to work more closely together. There's always this murmuring about the OFC WC qualifier being placed into the AFC final qualifying stage. Obviously this benefits the AFC by meaning they don't have to playoff against a CONMEBOL or CONCACAF team, and the OFC by giving their qualifier more meaningful games.
If this was to happen though, it could be part of a wider deal to allow more teams from NZ (or anywhere else in the OFC) to enter the A League - if it's ever viable and the FFA agrees. Kiwi players (or other Oceanian players, depending on the team) playing in an NZ-based team in the A League would be counted as Aussies for ACL purposes. If say, an Auckland team was formed, that would mean the player pool for domestic football would be reduced in NZ, so other clubs from the Island nations would have more chance of qualifying for the CWC too (obviously would piss off the coal face fans in NZ, but not every deal can benefit every stakeholder. I still think the net benefits would be good for NZF). OFC could even take some cut from TV rights to the AFC leg of the WC qualifying from the qualifying team in order to sweeten the deal for them.
- AFC and its member nations get any easier WC path
- OFC get a bit more money from the qualifying and its member nations get more chance of meaningful games
- NZF get a second kiwi based professional club, and potentially more meaningful international matches
- I figure the FFA would be happy with any club that can survive and get decent crowds. If that's Auckland, then I doubt they'll care
Coalface fans on both sides of the Tasman would be pissed off but oh well, they're the eggs getting broken to make this tasty omelette.
Sadly, I'm sure that there's too much vested interest from people in key positions in the OFC and AFC for this to happen. Probably other political/financial reasons why it wouldn't happen too. People from the Middle East whingeing about travelling to NZ for matches or something (even though it's not really much further than Aussie if you've already come that far)"
Such an agreement should also help sort out reserve team situation as well. IIRC correctly Bin Hamman was the main opponent of an OFC team in the A League and he's gone now (although his successor may well feel the same way)

Correct. As Gareth clearly stated to Telfer in the podcast, the Nix are guests in an Australian competition. What this means for their future is unclear.
