ANZAC match AllWhitesVSocceroos

From the FoxFootball fan forum via twitter

David gallop says anzac tradition for Socceroos is on the agenda. Some suggestion v Turkey...

But Anzac day does not fall in or even near a international window so hard to see that working, It does however fall (this year) the Thursday after the a league grand final. Seems to me perfect timing for aleague based players to play a Anzac game the weekend after the A league final. Be great to see that become an annual tradition.

A few more tweets to FFA & NZF, maybe we can make it happen

Would love to see some scope for some kind of traditional ANZAC fixture. Could it work better at an age-grade level? Or the Football Ferns?

The big boys would obviously be logisitcally very difficult.

Could it even just be organised as some sort of A league friendly after the season?

Australian A league players vs NZ A league players.

Obviously a problem with this would be that Australia would have a big advantage as it would nearly be the phoenix vs A league all stars - minus foreigners on both sides.

Would we get killed? Or would we have enough talent to make it an interesting and competitive match?

It would be the Phoenix+Marco+Smeltz+MacGlinchy. I think there would be enough talent in the NZ side to make the game competitive, it would be a lot closer than an All Whites vs Socceroos game.

I'm not sold on the idea to be honest, considering it would be just a few days after the showpiece event in the A-League calendar, so would most likely draw a small crowd, which wouldn't look good after having a sold out crowd of 40k+ a few days before.

Could be interesting as an All-Star break/'State' of Origin type game mid season, like the idea of a game on ANZAC day, but think its hard with the way our season currently is. (Also other option would be to move the Final out two weeks, put this the weekend before, but like the Pro-Bowl in NFL that system doesn't work :P)

For All Star would've Suggested NSW/Victoria vs rest, gives them 6 teams vs Perth/Adelaide/Phoenix/Roar - Could be fun :P

Gimmicky games (such as state of origin or NSW+VIC vs the rest) just won't get the support from the majority of the active supporters in the league. The reponse on twitter among the Australian footballing community has been overwhelming negative towards some of these ideas presented at the FFA forum last night. FFA would be relying on the plastic fan who only shows up for one-off games to buy a ticket, and there's no guarantee that they will do this. The only reason the All-Star game coming up is selling so well is because the most well-known team in the world is coming. I'm not sure that an All-Star game just between players from the A-League will sell more than 10k tickets, which would not make it financially sensible to do.

An A league all stars game wouldn't interest me.

An aus v NZ one would though. However I doubt it'd interest many Australians.

If possible an ANZAC v Turkey game would be cool.

We have enough trouble getting our players to play in an international window, there's no way clubs would let them leave the club outside a window. It's a nice idea, but just not possible in the current football world.

Yeah, it would have to be in an international window.

No FIFA windows in April sadly. Maybe they could try to arrange something in 2014, as a lead up to world cup preparations. In saying that, Turkey doesn't look like getting out of their qualifying group.

I also recall a presser from Fred DJ about insisting on representation in windows for not being asked out of it.

He did say that.
It begs the question, would a game of someone against Turkey have the same significance if it was a 3+ weeks before or after ANZAC Day?

Why not just Aussie based vs. NZ based (ie. A-League vs. A-League/ASB Prem). Vicelich, Clapham...etc

That's not a bad idea allowing ASB players in for the NZ team - we'd need the volume of players.

Some would be nursing knocks to the end of the season, or postponing surgeries, the NZ side may end up short of numbers if it's just the Phoenix  + marco/smeltz/weemac

Would this be our team?

Yep that's what I was getting at, I think it would be quite competitive. Only question is I guess would Australian fans get into it if their top 11 or so are playing overseas and unavailable.
