We have no idea on the costs, player availability or anything, and what good is a 5-0 tanking when we've got the qualifying games coming up ?

Too right. We are much better off looking for games against teams of a similar standard and style as Saudi Arabia/Bahrain.

so if a full strength England team came knocking on the door and said they want to play in NZ

we would say "no, because we will get thrashed and we got a WC qualifier in 2 months"

Basically yes, although England are more of our level so we probably would want to play them.

Also, Argentina were not going to come here.

And if you seriously thought NZ got more out of the game against Spain at the Confederations Cup than the game against Iraq then you are mental. We couldn't even get the ball off Spain, what the f**k did we learn from that?

We would say no to England/Argentina because we have games organised in September already in the area of the world we will be playing in later and want the experience of that and of playing similar teams

Quite simple, plus England coming here??  yeah right

No one likes to have a crack at England more than I do but 'more of our level'? I don't think so.

If you were a half decent player you would learn a lot from playing a better team than yourself.
The first thing is that if you give the ball away cheaply, then you will get punnished.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

In all honesty I think they made the right decision.

If Argentina had offered to come here although we'd save a lot of money I still think there'd be numerous hurdles to overcome.

Of course NZF wants to play them, but it is all just bad timing. However who to say that they won't have a game later on.

Sept, Oct and Nov isn't favourable while we are adjusting to the middle east conditions. You are really asking a lot for the players to adjust when it is too close to the playoffs. It's too disputative to the players' build up. Surely going to South America or China and the to the Middle East only to return back to the Middle East for the first leg is asking too much for the players when they just finished the confederation cup. That would just screw their preparation.

That last game against Iraq is just the beginning phase of preparation, why undo that frame of mind and playing focus on a senseless game against a completely different and superior team, we already did that against Italy, Spain and South Africa and learnt what we need to know ourselves.

Preparation needs build and time, we don't want the team to be distracted by playing the Argies.

If we lose that playoff after we played the Argies, then people will be all over NZF and the coaching for ill preparation.

I rather not play the Argies until we finish the WCQ play offs.AllWhitebelievr2009-06-28 22:44:12

Why can't we book them in for another time.
Argentina are an experience for us to play at anytime.

I think NZF made the right decision we would lose too much money. The arguement we should play England is different.

For one, tv rights would be much higher for this game, and it would be a sell out in England if it were played there or if it were here, making it potentially proftable, whereas the Argetina game woulf in all likely hood just cost money.

We are just beginning to get out of the red financially why would we want to be put straight back into it??

Smart move NZF to say no!!

Yeah cause no one would wanna go see Argentina, one of the best sides in world football, two time World Cup winners, managed by one of the all time legends Diego Maradona and boasting players such as The People's Footballer of the Year (TM) Lionel Messi, Sergio "Kun" Aguero, Juan Roman Riquelme and Carlos Tevez.

Totally agree.  If it did not sell out there is something pretty wrong with NZ.  I recon there would be better crowds for that then the rubbish ABs are getting right now.

Damn, everyone here seems to have the cash to spend to travel to South America just to watch our All Whites play Argentina . . . .

It's only a 14-hour flight. Practically just around the corner.

And nobody's saying it wouldn't be a great event (here or there).

But it definitely wouldn't be the best build up for us going into the WC qualifiers.

We need to have a few games where we can hope to enjoy an even share of possession, not the 25% we would likely get against Argentina.

So as I said sometime in the future it would be good to have that experience.   Pity the Thai Airways All Whites are not sponsored by Lan Chile.

It feels like we've just turned down the hot chick at the school disco so we can get lucky with Jordan and Iran the two ugly girls in sitting the corner. Flash_Harry2009-06-30 22:49:59

Because the hot chick is just a cawk tease, and with the other two we actually have a chance of scoring.

We learned "F**k, these Spaniards can play a bit, eh?"

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Wow so this is definitely not happening ay? I just saw in the Argie press they are still expecting to play either NZ or Mexico in Cordoba in Sept, Maradona just said he would call Palermo and Ortega for the game.

Would definitely love to see the All Whites play Argentina... but maybe not this year and better in the ROF!!! :D

Maybe with the canning of the Iraq game NZF has recontacted Argentina?

Nah, I doubt it, the phoenix game would be too close and it is best to play them at the world cup or even in a warm up match after we get through past the WCQs but not before, as Argentina is not our current aim and task.
