That CGW story was genius! Very little substance, mostly full of James McOnie brilliance.

If by brilliance you mean the *largely* unfunny sloth that is James McOnie then yeah sure. He would do better to get a larger shirt or dispense with the tie....

Wow. An Amateur competition called the Premiership. Nice.

Are we actually allow to say "premiership" for an amateur national competition?? Thought that word is reserved for professional national leagues. I just don't want to be ridiculed by overseas footballers for using that name. It seems a bit too assumptive to say so IMHO.

How big is the multi-millions are we talking about? Are we getting the TV coverage that we all deserved? Or we are still waiting on the TV channels to make a move on that part of the picture?

Don't ASB have a partnership with TV3???AllWhitebelievr2010-09-02 22:53:00

Well, a typical previous exchange goes like this:

Them: "You have a premiership in NZ? I would love to come and play over there"

Me: "No it isn't a premiership, it is a national league called New Zealand Football Championship"

Them: "Don't you guys play professional?"

Me: "No, it's an amateur competition"

Them: "No wonder your national team is crap. You don't have a premiership like other countries"

Me: "We have one NZ team in the Australian A-league competition, they are professional"

Them: "One professional team? thats a joke, can't see that working well at all. I can play second or third division in europe with a decent wage, well forget about it then"

And on it goes.

Good players will come over if wage are comparable to even league one/english championship wages. They will come over for the lifestyle difference, even if it a bit lower payment than they are used to. They like to enjoy the game but not have to struggle making ends met.

Thats why I am a bit wearily of using the word "Premiership." Some people would really have a good laugh at us. If it is not really showcasing the professional game to the public, its just a silly name change to make it sound better than it is.AllWhitebelievr2010-09-02 23:30:17

Well some quality players from Europe may hear the word 'premiership' and jump at the chance to play here.  Tie someone like Kolo Toure down for 5 years before he realizes his mistake and you're sweet because a.) he plays here for 5 years or b.) some team in Europe pay big bucks to a Kiwi team to sell him.

Win-win (100% will happen).

Since when does "premiership" mean proffesional competition?

AWB, it's the highest level domestic competition in the country, so they are more than entitled to call it a 'premiership' if they choose to do so. Whether it is professional or amateur has got bugger all to do with it.

Much as it may surprise some people, the word 'premiership' was actually around before the EPL arrived.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

At Canterbury Rugby League we have just completed the Harrington's Brewery Premiership.
That's not even a round ball competition.   Also, strictly amateur.
Sounds like we will have to sit and wait for the wrath of the FA to fall upon us.   No, we'll just get on with it.
Great move by NZF - things are looking up.   Well done to ASB.   Perhaps we will see Goldstein and his boss featuring football in their future ads.   I could write a couple of scripts now - I bet his boss has never heard of football

Thank you ASB,again but I'd really love to see us become the BMW All Whites too, at least they'd arrive in style, like those diplomatic cars.

i think they must still be negotiating AWs naming and shirt sponsor rights.
A good way to bring another sponsor on board and more $ by selling those rights separately.

I love the idea that AWB is in regular conversation with quality overseas professional footballers.

Didn't know the AW's had/are sponsored by the Thai's.....Mind you " Thailand all whites" sounds like a brand of rice!!!!!

Excellent news about ASB coming on board. It really shows how far the game has come recently. The WC the Nix.....football is on a roll and the corporates want to be part of the action. More money for grass roots and a properly funded "premiership" and youth league will pay big dividends in player talent. Hopefully there will be more and more kiwis coming throught the system and earning a living from the game.
