AW's may lose a fan.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I was "shocked and saddened" to hear within the dressing room of our national football team "music" from Da** Dob***.  I was just told that "he's a kiwi icon"... well I don't dare....

It's appalling that something like that should have a presence with the squad. Surely this can be remedied? Surely? Please, tell me it can be!!! We have to draw the line somewhere.

Well that 'presence' may have been the same one that Rory Fallon has a strong link with.

Personally, I think Dave Dobbyn's written some good stuff. However, I've always f*****g hated "Slice of Heaven". I cringed when I saw that video, and everytime I hear it on TV during rugby matches.

Surely there's more recent NZ songs that they could play?

Legendary stuff that, was stoked to see the song making an appearance and the boys being so excited in the dressing room without the need for a beer. Great to see! Awesome vibe in there.

You know, genocide.  Admittedly it's not much worse, but most would agree it probably shades Dobbyn.

They should have filmed Poi E, definately. In fact, I'm gonna put Poi E on my World Cup playlist right now.

Hey, in the mid-80s that would have been a hot fantasy for many red blooded Kiwi ladies. And a few guys.

But seriously, I thought "dave dobbyn" was a Winter Olympics sport, like bob-dylan. Or is that bob-sledding?

Yeah, it was the other team on Saturday who had that to remember from the early 90's, rather than trashy pop music.

After Bahrain they listened to Black eyed peas, so Kiwi music is an improvement I feel.

It must be a popular song with kiwis playing abroad. Remember when the league boys won the WC they song it on the podium.

It's a great kiwi song; though kinda funny that it came out before some of the team were born!

At least it wasn't Loyal, which is a bit of a dirge ...

Proof positive that NZ culture is seriously flawed and on the edge of decline....

Hello Mr Haden,
Can you tell me if NZ Football has a quota for those with superior tans, and does it count if one of the parents is British or Greek?

No it wasn't. Not ever. Back then Dobbyn looked even more Hobbit-like than he does now. And, due to only being in the early stages of what was later to become rampant hairloss, he was also a lot more ginger.
His voice also sounded more like Mickey Mouse on helium than it does now.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Unfortunately these kind of songs can never be picked, they just kind of happen or they don't. Kind of like nicknames. You try and get everyone to call you "the k man" or something then one person calls you "drongo" one time, it sticks, and forever you're "the drongo". You can't force it, it either happens or it doesn't.
And for whatever reason slice of heaven has stuck. Even when I was on my OE (5 years ago) that was the song kiwis belted out at pubs and general get togethers.
20 years ago it was 10 guitars.
Probably the only other one to come close is "Why does love do this to me" but after "Jackie Chan" no-one can remember any of the lyrics to the verses.
Do you reckon West Ham supporters would have chosen Blowing Bubbles as their song by popular vote?

[/QUOTE] Thought you needed to know this

"I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" was introduced to the club by former manager Charlie Paynter in the late twenties. A player, Billy J. "Bubbles" Murray who played for the local Park School had an almost uncanny resemblance to the boy in the famous "Bubbles" painting by Millais used in a Pears soap commercial of the time. Headmaster Cornelius Beal began singing the tune "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" with amended lyrics when Park players played well.[3]

Beal was a friend of Paynter, while Murray was a West Ham trialist and played football at schoolboy level with a number of West Ham players such as Jim Barrett. Through this contrivance of association the club's fans took it upon themselves to begin singing the popular music hall tune before home games, sometimes reinforced by the presence of a house band requested to play the refrain by Charlie Paynter.[3]
