i think this game shows why NZ isn't a top 30 side, we can play great in patches, but utter crap in others. but with the patches on offer against Australia and in this game things are looking rather promising

No, we aren't a 'top 30 side' because football has never had a chance in NZ and because of our small population base.

We will always be limited compared to basically every other side but that bit of quality that Smeltz showed there gives us a bit of hope going into the World Cup.

I think we'll make a whole lot of subs and Serbia will probably overrun us because of that - no shame, though. 1-0 against Serbia at half time in what is basically an away game is something to be proud of.

This is impressive overall. Smeltz's goal very much like Killen's against Aussie yes.. good to see Fallon featuring in the first half. Shame he didn't bury that shot of his!

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

I don't think we've been patchy. I think we started slowly, and it's been pretty even since the goal.

Shame Smeltz didn't bury the follow up you mean!

And we started very nervously but once we got a bit of confidence up we're fine. That is our biggest problem - we start with almost *too* much respect for the opposition. valeo2010-05-30 04:10:39

I wonder if we will see Mulligan on @ the 2nd half.

I was just wondering that. Ricki talked him up when selecting him, despite no game time for the Nix, it would crazy if Mully can't even get on in a pre-cup friendly.

Plodder is doing alright apart from a few horrible misplaced passes (especially the one to Leo)

Chuckles at the patronising pommie commentator calling Smeltz's goal "a gangling effort". Also Paston is "a competent enough keeper on his day". Talk about damning with faint praise.

We played well for about a 15min period after the goal. before and after that, we were pretty sh*t, to be honest.

Well taken goal, Smeltzy. I don't rate Christie at all. Elliott is very patchy, knocked a couple of 10 yard passes at knee height, and generally looks uncomfortable.

Wood working hard up front, I like what I see. Fallon dominating physically up front which is good.
To be honest, the only place we're lacking is in the midfield. Bertos is working hard, but needs better support from his Centre mids, Christie is absolutely nowhere, and you can't expect Elliott to be all over the place. I'd give Clapham a go, see how he links with Bertos on that right-hand side to give some penetration perhaps.

I've not been much of an Elliott fan but he's looked good both today and against Oz. A few errors don't out weigh the valuable work he is doing.

Yep - what the All Whites lack completely is a ball playing CM but we have to make do with what we have. Elliott is class about 1/2 the time - I just wish he was a few years younger going into this WC

Bit of a shame little Mac couldn't play this gamevaleo2010-05-30 04:18:38

Agreed Christie has been anonymous for me, Bertos, Lochhead, Elliott busy but not always effective. As the commentator just said, some of our passing has been very sloppy.

Probably be a good idea to bring Elliott off as soon as possible

Serbia pipped France for automatic qualification also.

Maybe they're all expecting the altitude to do the work on those underhit passes

Getting a lot of change out of early long balls and crosses recently. Our front 3 are actually quite dangerous.
