Grrrrrrr,

Can the team please stay at the airport for a couple of hours in order for me to come say hello?

Maybe ground them for a couple of hours and coup them up in the plane.

They're staying at the Hotel Intercontinental on Customhouse Quay.

Their delegation has arrived already.  Saw some poor frazzled woman in an NZF jacket looking like she was being put upon by half a dozen angry Bahrain officials.

Lols.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Bloody heck, that's a large jet. Lucky it'll be quite lightly loaded or they'd have trouble stopping in 1900m. Is it going to hang around, or heading elsewhere to wait things out?

Hope someone gets some video/still footage, nothing that big has come in for years.

I'm under the impression its going to be quite full considering it has 200 supporters and the players on board.

That's not true.  Hard News flew to Auckland and back a few months ago.

Take off run at MTOW 2,990 m

Might be an interesting take off feat as well.....and Wellys runway is hardly flat aka tail scrape at melbourne

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Which is about 50-60% full. Shouldn't really be an issue landing, that's what brakes and thrust reverse is for. Just a shame it's not unusually windy, that'd have been great landing.

Getting out with a useful load is much more difficult, but then I guess money doesn't come into it for them

Get it right - at this time of year morning prayer is about 4:20 am, so I'm sure they'll appreciate the help. :) (source: fianz.co.nz)

Haha. Just mentioned it because I remember hearing how a bunch of Aussies woke up the Uruguay team the night before the game. Worked for them!

To be fair they only did it because they were treated like crap in Uruguay - don't think anything similar happened in Bahrain.

Definitely too late to organise now but I reckon it would have been cool to greet the Bahrain side with a haka at the airport.

Gives the whole intimidation and "this is our territory now" vibe as well as traditional NZ welcome. Hopefully we'll more than make up for it at the RoF. I want to be so loud the players can't hear themselves think.

As long as it's not a haka!

I spoke to someone at NZF about the arrival and the response it was suggested that the Bahraini contingent wanted to keep their arrival details under wraps. Not sure if that was true though as it seems that they are now calling for media to herald their arrival.

What is the significance of the "water arches"?

Yeah in NZ we like to win it fair and square. Not hire agents to poison food, etc.

Traditional greeting for crusie ships, new plane arrivals etc....and gives fire service chance to practise synchronised hoses.

Beats the recent flour arches the Welly fire service had to deal with

4.30pm was optimistic I thought given its a 3 hour plus flight time usually..may have head winds.  So departure 1.20 our time..more like 5pm Id have thought.  Perhaps they are going slow planning how to land it...

nah just think the team and pilot thought NZ was in oz and have spent an hour trying to find us on the map .

right now they're probably thinking they were going to Newcastle and have realised the weather is gonna be so much different!!

Looking at the number of scheduled arrivals around 430, was a bit tight, though that said, 530 is pretty busy as well.

Might have been told to hold up a bit to make sure the flightpath and runway is clear enough for something that large to come in. I'd be nervous landing at Wellington if I'd not done it before, with a jet that big. And that's before the gusts!subria2009-11-12 16:31:38
