You should, just wait until Team Wellington are it town and it's a nice day.  Great way to spend a couple of hours.

Go on stretch yourself.

Kind of you suggesting a team that Otago should beat!

Hi everyone, with precious little time remaining I have to make do with what I have regarding a banner idea.

Originally I was thinking about "rain" and "Bahrain" but the best I could come up with involved "raining on someone's parade". Which sounded like tempting fate.

Someone threw up the idea/concept of "pain" and "Bahrain". So working with that I came up with a preliminary slogan for the sign:

BAHRAIN'S PAIN, ALL WHITES' GAIN

Any thoughts on this? Ideally I need to finalise what I want to put on the banner this weekend to give me time to find someone to put the Arabic translation on the banner for me.

The intention is to have the slogan in English and Arabic, with each country's flag represented on both sides. Might sneak a "One Shot for Glory" player into it somewhere too.

The chances of me coming up with anything profound next week are unlikely so I want to get onto this ASAP so that I can have everything sorted well in time for my flight up north!

Ok, have had another think on this banner. Still haven't heard any of your thoughts/suggestions ;)

Shortlist so far is:

BAHRAIN'S PAIN, ALL WHITES' GAIN

or

BAHREIGN ENDS TONIGHT - ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT

Penny for your thoughts?

I personally wouldn't go with the second one. The "reign", at least to me, suggests some form of dominance and leadership. I wouldn't call earning 5th place in Asia and having no prior WC appearanmces a "reign"

The first one though is tops

Thanks mate.

Yeah the second one only come up as I was trying to invent options to be sure the first one was ok.

Sounds good and I'll draft up the layout.

Damn, keep having ideas too late - must be the time difference.

Was going to suggest something like:

"Australia & NZ 1st and 5th in Asia

Bin Hamman/Blatter's worst nightmare?"

UPDATE!

Finished painting the lettering of the banner last night and the universal opinion so far has been positive from the people I've shown! Still not quite finished yet though ;)

Now a question for you locals :) We are sitting in and around the following area:

30U-R DD 100

I don't know the stadium layout etc. - can anyone tell me if there will be railings or something that I will be ALLOWED to hang the banner onto that will not obstruct the view of spectators?

Any local knowledge would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, you should be fine.  SOrry I haven't got back to you.

General rules are that as long as you don't cover advertising and the banner isn't objectionable or ambush marketing there should be no issues.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Whether or not they let me hang the banner isn't going to make a difference to me. I'll still have it on me. But my main question is do you guys know if there are actually appropriate railings etc. around the ground from which a banner could actually be hung, and if so is that generally ok?

If it can't be hung, so be it. I'll just walk around with it before the game starts - will I have access to walk in front of the Bahrain seating area from where my ticket lets me into?

I'm picking that the atmosphere is going to be fun and sporting rather than hostile so I doubt that I'd cause any great riot.

There are appropriate railings all the way around the stadium. However its probably worth remembering to everyone on here, that the temporary seating may or may not cover up some railings.

Cheers mate, that's great info. If it can't be hung then so be it but just wanted to know what is possible.

Do you know if each section of the crowd is fenced off from the others or whether the banner can be walked over to the Bahraini section? :)

Wave hi, banner in hand, be generally friendly.

I presume that Westpac isn't going to have the hostile home and away feel that is famous in other parts of the world.

Banner is going incredibly well. Many of the skills I'm needing to employ are being doing for the first time so learning a lot and making many mistakes. Won't matter in the end though :)

At the very last minute someone came up with an Arabic translation for me to put on the banner! It even RHYMES in Arabic as well - how's that for flukey??!

The translation has been approved by our friend Mr. Bahrain who described the words as "beautiful".

Translated literally it apparently means something along the lines of "New Zealand tortures Bahrain (ie. via brilliant football), Bahrain complains/suffers".

Pics soon

Thanks for the help and heads up - what are my chances of finding some other suitable railing nearby to where I am sitting? It doesn't have to be right near where I am sitting - I'm sure I can find someone that is prepared to have it draped in front of them in a suitable place.

Or are you saying that temporary seating has taken out any and all available options anywhere near Aisle 30?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

P.S. Banner just completed and I'm not normally a proud person but tonight I'm proud. Too tired to take pics atm.

Hey Ahmad, The best places to put up a banner are over and down in front of the front row (which has now been removed on the entire side your on) or up the back there is even more space, maybe 3 m high of tin behind the back rows. I was talking to a friend at the game yesterday, and he agreed if the banner is good and place up the back, ppl will see it.  hellobeaver2009-11-09 11:52:01

OMG sign is looking so good!!!

Thinking about getting some metal rings punched into the sign - I have learned today that they are technically called "islets" and I have had quotes ranging from $20 right down to $3 to get this done!

beaver - on the tin behind the back rows are there suitable things to tie the banner onto?

I am such a n00b - what string should I be buying and bringing along to hang the banner?

mate Im sure you'll be able to find some empty rail around the stadium somewhere. It'd be hard to hang at the back so do it at the front off a rail and it'll be perfect. And just get some cord that you can tie together and that will handle a bit of wind rain and football

Im thinking of doing a quick one but not till fri when my exam is done and dusted. Not sure if ill hang it or just get my group of ten to just huddle under it to keep us warm as well as have a sign. Probably just something simple like Lets go All Whites

Silly string won't work either.  Neither will twine or cotton.

You need magic string. Enquire about the magic beans while you are there.

Try Velcrose straps on the back of your banner. Wrap them around the handrail.
