Best Ever Foreign Players to Play for NZ Clubs

Another Forum topic asks for thoughts on the best-ever players to play for a NZ pro team i.e Kingz, Knights or Phoenix.
How about the best-ever foreign full-time professional players to play for any NZ club team ever (National League, A-League or regional league)?
I nominate:
Paul Mariner- ex-Ipswich and England international (an Auckland club in the national League in the 1980's);
Sir Trevor Brooking- ex-West Ham and England ("University" (of Auckland) in the National League in the mid-1980s);
John Fashanu- later of Wimbledon, Aston Villa and England (Mirimar in 1982- played in televised Chatham cup Final);
Peter Mendham- of Norwich City (Two spells with NZ clubs in late 70s and early 80s);
Ricky Hill-went on to play for Watford when they were a top team in the old First Division (Christchurch United 1983);
Jonathan Gould- new Phoenix assistant, prev. of Celtic and Scotland fame (played as a teenage centreback early in his career at Napier city Rovers and was one of the team's top-scorers in the mid-1980s);
Brian McAllister- ex-Wimbledon, Aston Villa and Scotland 1998 World Cup squad (Napier City Rovers centreback mid-1980s);
Patricio Almendra- ex-Chilean First Division and Chile international 2002 World Cup qualifiers (Hutt City, National League 1998 and Football Kingz 2002);
Aaron Silva- ex-Chilean age group international and First Div. player (Football Kingz 1999-2002);
Dennis Ibrahim- ex-German Second Div. and later Austrian First Div. (Football Kingz 2001-2002);
Ian Porteous- ex-Aberdeen under Sir Alex, winner of Euro Cup Winners' Cup 1982 (Hutt City and Wellington United, National League late 1990s)

Others of course, did very well (and many still reside here) who came here from pro football in Britain (mostly) and went on to play for NZ, such as Steve Sumner, Steve Woodin, Bobby Almond and Paul Halford. But they weren't full-time pros when they played here (most had day jobs).
Kevin Keegan played a series of exhibition games for regional selections against the All Whites in 1985 but those sorts of games don't count either.

Others can probably name their favourite overseas imports they remember playing for their own or contemporary clubs??????????

Anyway, back to the topic, who was the guy who pplayed up front for Miramar In the early days of summer national league) who unfortunately committed suicide later on.  He was quality

Justin Fashanu is that who you are talking about? He was at Mirimar Rangers late 90's before he committed suicide and didnt his brother play there too years before?

Yes I think it was Justin Fashanu at Miramar Rangers in 97. 18 appearances and 12 Goals. However, he had a problematic life which saw him estranged from his brother John in 1990 when he came out as gay and later in 98 was accused of sexual assault by a 17 year old. He hanged himself in a garage believing that he was presumed guilty by media (there was no warrant or evidence) and not wanting to "further" shame his family and friends.

I remember him the sports news, where the club had no problems with his lifestyle.

John, his brother did played with Miramar Rangers in 1982 apparently. And he was playing on the old Big League Soccer show with Wimbledons famous crazy gang a few years later. Top notch player.

The lucky guy got to co-host Gladiators with Ulrika Jonsson . . . .

How about Ken Armstrong?  Played professionally in and represented England before moving here and turning out for NZ.

Agree totally- one of the top English players of the 1950s and early 60s who played for Chelsea and had full England caps and gave great service to football in NZ, fathering a footballing dynasty here who have represented NZ in both men's and women's soccer.
Also agree Terry Phelan of Otago is a shoo-in: was once the most expensive defender in world football when he went to Man City for millions and was a staunch member of those greatest-ever Irish sides of the 90s under Jack Charlton.
Being a former Nelson lad, I'd have to nominate Soloman Islander Bartram Suri too- the best striker in the country at his peak with Nelson Suburbs 1994-1999. (Never really got a decent chance at the Kingz, where he was bizarrely used as a wing-back). Has a record of scoring about every time the Solomans have played Australia- and once scored twice against the All Whites for an "All Star" team. A scout travelled from Spain to watch him in the National League about 1998 after New Caledonian Christian Karembeu was a hit at Real Madrid (he introduced himself at a Nelson match and videoed Suri. Maybe Karembeu recommended him or they were just seeing what other talent there was in the Pacific).

Sorry, mate! Yours was a good post and brought back many memories of 80s football. This is just the way it came out when I copied and pasted your post. You definitely get extra credit for mentioning Ulrika Jonsson who hasn't had much exposure here in New Zild but has been one of the nicest women on UK television for over a decade. Poor woman always seemed to go out with dodgy blokes though, reaching a low point when assaulted in a bar by then-boyfriend Stan Collymore during the 98 World Cup in France. That guy definitely was a bit loco...seemed to squander his early talent as a player too. Maybe he would have done better as a pro if he'd had a spell in NZ as a teenager, as other young British players did, under someone like Sergeant-Major Kevin Fallon, to straighten him out? You'd have thought he would have been the sort of washed-up player the Knights would have targeted as their marquee too.

Wasn't he playing for Stop Out when he head butted the ref?

yes, i believe so, the Leeds connection came about when their scouts got so excited at finding another player who so neatly fitted the Leeds mould

I'd go for John Fashanu. Or the square-headed Canadian who plays for us a few season ago.

I heard all sorts of stories about him, tbh. Being punched by Kevin Fallon was a classic backroom story. He only had a few games with Leeds first team but mainly he was with reserves. I think he has a brother who played in the Leeds first team. There is all types of stories but by and large, I found him to be a very helpful and encouraging coach. Lucky for us FIFA turned a blind eye about his supposed lifetime ban from the sport.

No problems Pete, I suspect as much. I think Ulrika Jonsson needs a Kiwi holiday. Very attractive gal, she is.
