Harry "Chainsaw" McCulloch! Scotsman who came here in the late 70's I think, played for Howick in the old Swiss Maid Northern Prem League - Keano type player.
Saw him beat Declan Edge in a Chatham Cup game at Howick in about 84/85, Edge grabbed fell over and grabbed his leg to stop him getting away - Harry just about kicked Edge's head off and he had to be subbed - loved it!

That's the type of player the All Whites and Phoenix need. Someone who is as hard as nails. Aloisi is the closest we will get to that, unlessl, as I have suggested countless times on this forum, we bring Stig Tofting on board.

Pele or Cruijff, I can't separate the two.

On a more serious note, I'd say Neil Woodhams would be my pick.

Imagine the half-time show if Jones was allowed to do it on the big stage?

woodhams! good pick - 4,589,658 games over 75 years in national league footy, all played at a level well above anyone else on the pitch.

nice banner frank!

Are you talking about Paul Nicholls from ChCh Tech?

Neil Woodhams is a good choice.  I watched him play many times for Waitakere back in the 90's. Good player

sorry christchurch fans, but allan carville would have to come close for me. excellent in the national league as a goal poacher, but a headless chicken in a white shirt

Brad Scott.

Brad Scott only ever got picked because a close relative of his was up to something with someone high up at SNZ at the time...
I think the worst ever AW might be between Brian Roberts, Kevin Birch or Tony Ferris.

Playing against him this Saturday. Managed to nutmeg him last time. Will pass on your high opinion and tell him to check out the forum. He is in some pretty good company and still a fairly handy player.
Very unlucky not to become an AW.

glad you agree! i know it's one from left field, but i really enjoyed watching him play as a kid and i didn't see many better wingers in the cigarette leagues.  i must say, i really enjoyed the christchurch united side of those days; their epic battles with mount wellington is stuff of legends.  it's a pity those days are gone

Pele and Maradona never played for the AW's. Or did you mean NZ-born players?

I saw many a game at Newmarket Park between Christchurch/Trans-Tours and Mt wellington. You are right, thoese really were the great days of our top level.
In fact if we are talking here about players who were unlucky not to become AWs, and who played for these two clubs, how about Kees Doornenbal or Barry Dickey?

nice, about the years that the Mount used to thump teams two leagues above them.

Edge and Greg Little became All Whites those years despite playing in Northern League Div 1

He played in 2 non A Internationals in '92 so 50/50 whether you call that playing for the AWs or not.  He was one of my favourite Waikato United players.

Jimmy Cudd and Chris McIvor were two of the driving forces behind the City Rovers sides of the early 2000's. Loved watching them play the likes of Central and Mirimar in those days. lucky enough to have played with both of them at HB at the back end of their careers.

Jimmy Cudd did play for the AWs I think. Cant remember the game. Might have been against a touring club side. Might have been more than one (yes this is vague but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in a 6am convo we had in Bangkok last year)

He was named in one those wider, 30-man "prelim squad" things that were in vogue for a while, along with the likes of Sanjay Singh, but never actually got on the park, to the best of my knowledge
