 Centre-back: Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand)

The first of the All Whites' defenders to catch the eye was Winston Reid, with his dramatic equaliser against Slovakia. With Tommy Smith also emerging in credit, there is a case for selecting all three of them. But there can be no doubt about the orchestrator and inspiration at the back. Ryan Nelsen was defiance personified. He was simply colossal against Italy, a performance that, whatever happens in the rest of the tournament, will belong among the World Cup's best and, however his career progresses, will surely rank as his finest hour and a half.

That is amazing. I'd love to see a clash between the Best XI staying on v XI going home.

No Italians in the starting bunch and one on the bench.
One Australian makes the start and none on the bench.

Some very, very strange choices there. It's as if they tried to make a lovable losers XI rather than the best side made of all the players going home.

Some very patronising comments too.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

haha that's a bit harsh on old poodle. TBH he shouldn't be anywhere near that best XI.

What are you talking about? He was one of our best players. Consistently good in all three games.

Three for me, and two for them.

And that is a fact set in stone because...

Anyone that knocks Lord Elliott clearly watched a different World Cup than I did. What was I watching then?
