"We are in regular discussions with Australia and they have indicated they are interested in bringing out a major football nation next year," Seatter said. "They asked us if we were prepared to share some of the travel and television costs..."

I realise Seatts rarely uses his account so Tony P, if you see him can you give him a kick and tell him to read this thread and tell us which team it is?

Or if anybody has any info it'd be appreciated!

Wonder if it's one the Euro 2008 teams looking for some warm-up games? Seems a bit of long way to come tho'.

Maybe it's one of the teams who didn't qualify looking for something to do!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Wasn't there talk of a Home Internationals type thing next year? That would rule out Scotland and England.

I'd be happy if Ireland came, but even better, Germany, France, or Denmark.

I reckon England could be a big chance. Was a few murmurs of them coming here.

Yeah. The Celtic Cup.

starts in 2009, and England will not be part of it.

Ah Ha! We should win that then

Wasn't there some talk about us playing England if (when!) neither of us qualified for Euro 2008?

Yeah there was i think, but i don't think it is going to happen since the Celtic Cup was 'invented'.

Ill check the BBC for the article.

Apparently they were, around 1966. I think they've shrunk a bit since then!

England would bring in a big crowd though.

And haven't England already come down under? They lost to Australia 3-1 and I think that was in Australia.

The 3-1 game was at Upton Park.

I'm sure England would get a big crowd here, I'm just questioning the English team's international credentials.

So you're saying you'd rather not see players like John Terry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney come here?? Not to mention the possibility of Beckham returning?

Three for me, and two for them.

No, I'm saying that if they are going to come, at least let's not laud and greet them as a great international team full of world-class players.

I'd say 2 possibly 3 of those listed are world class. They're just sh*t for England that's all.

Three for me, and two for them.

Of those you listed, only Rooney is close to being world-class, but he's nowhere near consistant enough to be deemed as such. He's still young though, so will undoubtedly learn to be more consistant.

Of the others, some are pretty good players but not really world-class (Beckham, Gerrard), and some are nothing more than above average (Terry, Lampard).

Rooney, Gerrard and possibly Lampard are all world class. Beckham wouldn't be world class to me i agree he's good so is Terry but not world class.

Top 25 in the world, there or thereabouts anyway.

If we're talking top 25, none of the England guys make it in my book.

By the way, if Lampard didn't play for Chelsea, he'd be nowhere near international football.

Really? The top 25 in the world and none would? Could you think of 25 players off the top of your head that are all better than the 3 in listed.

Three for me, and two for them.

Kaka, Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Iker Casillas, Andrea Pirlo, Thierry Henry, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Nesta, Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anders Iniesta, Daniel Alves, Michael Essien, Gianluigi Buffon, Carlos Puyol, Xavi, Clarence Seedorf, Kolo Toure, Tomas Rosicky, Seidu Keita, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

I could go on, and without mentioning some of the players playing in eastern Europe who are excellent in theor own right, but don't get the exposure because they don't play in a widely watched league like the Premiership.

Hmmm i don't think i'd class Iniesta as world class, or Rosicky for that matter even if he is a gooner. Scraping the barrell with Casillas too, probably would swap him for Cech.

Also Eto'o imo is one of the most overrated players in the woirld, and i've never even heard of Seidu Keita.

Three for me, and two for them.

I would be happy if it was anyone BUT England.

IMO i get quite pissed off when the media in NZ go on and on and on about the English being World beaters - in most sports.

Well, if you think Gerrard and Lampard are world-class, then so are Iniesta and Rosicky, as they're both better players than the English two (although admitedly Rosicky's form hasn't been that great over the last two seasons).

Keita is a Mali midfielder playing with Sevilla, and will surely be a really big name in world football pretty soon.

Casillas is the best keeper in the world. End of.

That says it all really. You speak of world class players being consistent, so how can Rosicky be world class when he's been distinctly average for two seasons now? Surely not the form of a world class player.

I only said Lampard could maybe be considered world class, not a definate. Gerrard is if you look at the way he lead Liverpool to the CL in 05, and up until this year he's been Liverpool's rock. Also Paul Scholes would make it ahead of Iniesta i reckon.

Keita will be a big name pretty soon? So not yet huh? That means he's not yet world class.

I agree that not many English players would make the top 25 (if any), but you really are pushing it with Puyol and van Nistelrooy in my opinion.

I don't know about now, but not too long ago Jan Koller was class, and if Bastian Schweinsteiger (I love that guys name) played as well for his club as he did for Germany at the last World Cup then he could be right up there.

It's Brazil - with a difference.  Strike force of Reinaldo and Marcinho (don't expect goals), midfield includes Daniel, Felipe, Leandro Love, George Paladini, defence is Cassio, Cleberson, Patrick, Roberto Carlos, and in goal is somebody else.  Should be an exceptional evening.

i reckon, whether you like the idea or not,  the England team would have more chance of filling the RoF than any other (apart from Brazil)

I'm not claiming they have better players etc , etc, just acknowledging the wider NZ public's perception of football
