Hmm it's a tough one: FIFA's known rampant corruption vs OFC's known rampant incompetence.

Maybe it was a bit of both. OFC incompetence screwing up someone's attempt to bribe us.

He was effectively in a position where both parties were trying to bribe him

how do we know he was not told by the majority of the board. Seems his word vs OFC and let's be honest, both are about as solid as mud.

Are there any minutes from OFC meetings that could shed some light on this (I know, asking a bit much from a football governing body!)?

I personally think Charlie did more then he let onto with Michael in that interview.

Charlie again gets a mention in the latest story to erupt about how Germany got the rights to stage the WC.

Charlie made front page news of the Mirror here in the UK as part of that.  NZF got a mention too (well SNZ).

The Telegraph London

"Britain was dragged into another scandal when allegations emerged that the Scottish-born former executive Charles Dempsey was paid $250,000 (£163,350) on the eve of the vote that took the 2006 World Cup finals tournament to Germany.

Theo Zwanziger, the former head of the German FA, claimed that a Swiss court document bore out his belief that the late Dempsey, of New Zealand, was paid off a day before abstaining from a ballot Germany won 12-11 against South Africa after England were eliminated."

Watching FIFA Uncovered on Netflix, made me think of Dempsey so l Googled him.

Favourite thing found- there is a wrestler in WWE who goes by the same name...https://www.wwe.com/superstars/charlie-dempsey

I really hope the wrestler was named after the abstainer!

We all know that most, oif not all members of the board of the various football associations have been offered/taken bribes in some form or another - a bag of cash, a sparkly thing for the wife free travel/accomodation to an exotic location to discuss all things football. Dempsey and others may be good upstanding people, but to believe they didnt accept free stuff as part of their tenure naive. It's human nature to take free stuff, and then, conciously or not favour the people who gave you said free stuff. Dempsey not voting and claiming he was inexperienced etc is ridiculous, at 79, you're not too old to make decisions, some maybe but I dont think he was past it. Top to bottom the footballing aristocracy are a crooked! Anyone who courts a position on the boards of these associations will eventually end up as crooked as the current lot.
