Damn this thread is funny . . .

It's times like this I wish we had the NZFC TV coverage so we can suss out the players and debate about the up and coming ones. It would be nice to have a NZFC XI playing the All-Stars for charity on TV. So we can have a peek.

Anyway, back to basics. . . . it's a 23 set up?

Probable Call ups (16-2):

Glenn Moss
Jacob Spoonley,

Ben Sigmund
Winston Reid- Red Card last friendly.
Ryan Nelsen
Andrew Boyens
Tommy Smith
Tony Lochhead

Tim Brown
Micheal McGlinchey
Aaron Clapham
Jeremy Brockie - Yellow cards in two consecutive friendly matches.

Shane Smeltz
Chris Killen
Rory Fallon
Chris Wood

Injured (3): Leo Bertos, Mark Paston, Jeremy Christie

Possible Call ups (6):

Jack Gleeson

Steven Old

Macro Rojas
Cole Peverley
Craig Henderson

Kosta Barbarouses

Outside chance (7):

David Mulligan
Chad Coombes

Chris James
Michael Boxwell
Dan Keat

Jason Hayne
Kris Bright

End of the road (3):

Duncan Oughton
Simon Elliot
Andy Barron
James Bannatyne

It aint the end of the road for Elliott. The guy has a season with the Chivas ahead of him and still figures in Ricki's plans.

Question (because this fred is full of lol-material at the moment):  Will the matches be televised either on free-to-air or Sky-we-support-NZ-Football-and-Mr-Serepisos?

Expect Gleeson to get the call-up ahead of Spoonley.

Agree that Elliott will probably be there. Surely you'd have to take Kosta after his season at the Roar, and taking Marco if just for the experience of being around the national team wouldn't be the worst idea.

The season hasn't even started so he hasn't even played a competitive match.

Coombes highly unlikely.  Don't know how he's playing but the level he's playing at Draper would be more likely.  Hayne hasn't set the ASB Premiership on fire this season either.

I would suggest Pearce more likely of a call from the ASB Premiership.

I doubt Pearce will be there with Smeltz, Killen, Wood, Fallon and Barbarouses but i do think he is in great form and deserves to perhaps be playing at a higher level. Perhaps a shot at a Nix trial later in the year?

Hayne is an interesting one. Such a talented footballer. Playing at Manawatu isn't going to progress his career though.

Really don't think team will be any different from South Africa apart from the addition of Gleeson, Rojas and Barbarouses

Moss, Gleeson, Reid, Sigmund, Nelsen, Boyens, Vicelich, Smith, Lochhead, Brockie, Rojas, McGlinchey, Elliott, Brown, Clapham, Barbarouses, Wood, Smeltz, Killen & Fallon

Some bizarre selections and omissions there All Whites believer.

Jake Gleeson
Marco Rojas
Kosta Barbarouses

Might as well vivid these three on the squad list already.

Also, you realize Michael Boxall is a centerback right?

Rojas and Barbarouses in the squad, one of whom coming in in place of maybe Bertos.  If Bertos gets the call then that is a joke. loyalgunner2011-02-21 23:45:31

I didn't say they were not in the squad, I just had them in the possible call up. The probables call up would have been numbered up to 19 expect we had 3 injuries and 2 players out of the next game with either a red card or two yellows. That leaves us with 14 probable players available for the first game into the line up.

Basically I was conservative with the naming of 14 available probable players. But that is more than compensated with the naming of 6 possible players which brings the total call ups to 20 players. This leaves three places for 7 players with an outside chance.

I thought that Boxwell is a centre midfielder rather than centre back. Anyway, still has enough to warrant notice.

Also I thought that Simon Elliot has retired from International duties? With the blooding of new players with strong friendlies, a thought in getting new midfielders to play with the only two games before starting the WCQ in October this year.

I hope that Ricki isn't retaining aged players that gets in the way of younger players that needs to get enough international experience by the time Brazil 2014 happens. Midfielders needs strong game experience when it comes international football to be effective when major tournaments happens. Simon Elliot has experience already but we need new midfield stock with experience and I am guessing that Ricki has planned to return to the world cup 2014 when he blooded a few of the young players in the squad during build up for the 2010 cup. These things take time and we have to be willing to cop a few losses on the way while blooding players even at 4 years out to settle on a midfield combination. It wasn't easy for the 2010 cup because we rightly had to fall back on the older experienced players. But come 2014, we don't quite have that. Tim Brown will be our most experienced midfielder come 2014.

Probable squad of 18

Moss
Gleeson

Nelsen
Reid
Smith
Sigmund
Boyens
Lochhead

Elliott
Brown
McGlinchey
Rojas
Brockie

Killen
Wood
Fallon
Smeltz
Barbarouses

Far too many forwards and wide players though. But I can't see who would miss out. No striker outside of these guys should get close to selection. Especially with Brockie able to play up front if needed.

------------------------------------------
Possible:
Clapham
Christie
Keat
Boxall
Spoonley
Old
Rowe
Vicelich
Henderson
-------------------------------------------
Injured:
Bertos
Paston

Isn't Reid going to miss these? Is Nelsen even interested? I'm in two minds about Rory, lot of forwards and if the ref is remotely strict he will be a bit of a liability. On the other hand I suspect the Japanese and Chinese are not really accustomed to tall strikers who don't mind mixing it up. Clapham could come in for Eilliot, Vicelich probably will come in for either Reid, Nelsen or a striker. Other than that I think LGs probable squad looks pretty accurate, injury and availability permitting.

Big  need to give some central midfielders some experiance. For the future it looks like Mclinchey and Brown  are it. Rickie needs to see if guys like Keat and Clapham are up to adapting to this level. We seriously need to develop some depth in these positions. Not sure who else is on the radar but it all starts now. You want to start playing thoise guys who will be doing the business in the next WC qualifiers.

There might be a surprise or 2 on Herbert list if they decide to choose 22 players:

Kris bright who just signed in hungary with Budapest Honved.
Paul cunningham who is the captain of balestier khalsa and played a game with phoenix reserve.
Kayne Vincent who scored 8 goals in 8 games in the Indian league with Churchill Brothers.
Cole Peverley who signed with Charleston Battery to replace Christie.

Luke rowe seems to be injured because he didn't play with birmingham city U18 for a while so I don't think he would be part of the list
