Why do we continue to discuss people who are about 2000 miles away from being picked?

2ndBest, who do you think is in the frame for 3rd goalkeeper then at national level? You'd think that every NZFC starting GK must be, at least, considered - the standard is pretty close between most of them. The best I've seen all year [I think} is the Waitakere GK in their game vs HB at Napier.

When it comes to NZFC keepers the correct answer is Spoonley. Only just missed out on a WC spot and after Banners retirement is the unofficial 3rd choice.

Three for me, and two for them.

Robinson? Really?

Checked the NZFC site and the keeper was Andy Ralph.Assuming Napier Phoenix is talking about the game on the 31st of october.
He appears to be an Englishman.

Just a question.
So you watched the game then?
Both goals v Auckland my view of the game.
If you had been looking and not going only by newspaper reports.

Stu Kelly 1st goal.
Came from a free kick with the Auckland attackers run not being picked up by a Canterbury defender.
You could see that he got his hands to but not holding the ball at the same time as Dan Terris took his own keeper out with a rugby tackle from behind.

Kopricic 2nd goal
His shot was going wide and took a deflection which Batty got a hand on but couldn't keep it out.
Could have done better with both goals but unlucky on both as well.

I agree he was playing better last season and dominated his area every game.

No need to be offensive.
Yes. I watched the game. Otherwise I would not comment.
He should not have conceded the first goal. Set piece into the area & failed to dominate.
Didn't blame him explicitly for the second goal as Canterbury were ripped apart, but he was slow to read the developing 1-on-1, which resulted in Koprivic having more of the goal to shoot at. His shot wasn't going wide, and my view was fom directly behind it.

Never saw him play, but if he's behind Robinson in the pecking order there that tells me a lot.

EDIT: Just checked Wiki which seems to suggest they're both English.el grapadura2011-01-31 16:16:00

Is Crowther close to obtaining residency? I know it is out there but could be a good option.

I've just seen a picture and it was Andy Ralph. I seem to recall that he wasn't 1st choice at the club. I usually take a bit of interest in the keepers and he really impressed me, looked a cut above any others I've seen at this level [and I've seen them all except the Waikato guy and I'd imagine the current Waitak number 1]. What's his pedigree? see he used to play for Altrincham - remember Kevin Hagen? he played there too.

  • Andy RALPH (d.o.b. 28 May 1983, height 6ft 1in)

Altrincham took on Andy Ralph as their second goalkeeper in the last week of July, 2008, after he had played in some of the pre-season games. Manchester-born Andy started out as a trainee with Tranmere Rovers before being released in 2002. After trials with Chester City he joined Vauxhall Motors, where he broke his arm early in the campaign of 2002-03. However, Andy was the Motormen's keeper in their FA Cup win over QPR in November 2002 when his save in a penalty shoot-out was a vital factor in the outcome. He later joined Northwich Vics, from where he went on loan to Witton Albion in March 2005. After being briefly at Bangor City (summer 2005), Andy was with Marine for a couple of years or so until the summer of 2008. Though still relatively young, Andy has the experience and ability to compete with Stuart Coburn for the first-choice jersey. He made his league debut for Altrincham as a half-time substitute for the injured Stuart Coburn against Histon on 1 November 2008, having previously started two cup matches for the Robins and then made his BSP debut for Alty on 15 November 2008 at Forest Green.

After a series of steady performances, Ralph gave away again to Stuart Coburn. To keep match fit he briefly was loaned to Trafford in early 2009 but in February he emigrated with his job to Australia. Career appearances for Altrincham: 10(+1)..

If gleeson gets a pro contract then as I've been banging on all this time he deserves serious consideration along with this German goalkeeper.

2nd best I'll bet my lawyer registration verses your masters degree that spoonley will not make the cut. Rickis loyal but not dumb

    Auckland will rise once more

Which means Gleeson is a professional, Marinovic is not.

Also based on the AucklandPhoenix theory; Aaron Clapham will not make the squad, and Andy Barron should never have been there, ever.

What would it take for Phil Imray to qualify for the All Whites as he's English? Just residency? He's class.

Its good to see we have a few options now beginning to appear across the whole squad except for RB which remains our achilles heal.

What i like though is the fact we are beginning to see a few more technical players emerge which will give  us a few more options of style that we can play.

Keat i think will turn into a quality CM, much in the way of Elliott, but with a bit more mongrel... I would love to see him and McG playing together to see what they can do together in the centre of the park, however i can't see Brown not getting the nod.

For three reasons, he's captain when Nelson isn't there (obvious leader), he's Rickis favourite and more importantly has done well for New Zealand.

How many kiwis are now officially signed in the MLS,

Boyens, Elliott, Keat, Boxall? and Glesson? although i think the later has played some pre season friendlies.

Officially - Boyens and Elliott. Keat's contract is not yet finalised, but only due to a formality that'll soon be resolved. Boxall has not yet been signed, I haven't heard much indication of his chances either way. Gleeson is expected to sign.

What about Paul Cunningham as one out of left field? He's stated he wants to be an AW, and Ricki's watched him play.

CB is kinda stacked at the moment with Nelsen, Reid, Sigmund, Boyens and even Old (playing at a higher level than Cunningham).

Yeah mainly agree.. just putting it out there. Hard to judge his abilities cos of the league he's playing in. But Boyens? Pah I don't understand what anyone sees in him.

Yea, I've never been a fan of Boyens at all, especiall after we got ruined by Spain at the Confederations Cup and pretty sure he was primarily at fault for most of those goals.
While I'm here, if people could make and effort to spellt Ryan Nelsen's name properly it would be much appreciated by the majority of this forum, Im sure
