Do we really have a chance against China? I am starting to get nervous now.

The article below mentions that the core of this Chinese team were in the 2005 U20 World Cup.
Bl00dy heck. They came top of their pool in that tournament and then lost to Germany 2-3 in the 2nd round. During and since that time they have played 90 games together.

There will be 59,997 screaming chinese fans in the stadium and 3 New Zealanders from what I can guess of the ticketing issues. ;)

It is their opening game of the tournament and all eyes are going to be on this game. Lets just hope that the pressure will be too much for the Chinese team. Our boys have got nothing to lose, I guess that is one thing in our favour.

The focus for Chinese football has been on the Olympic team rather the national team and the country is expecting a medal. Theyve been preparing for four years and have played around 90 internationals in that time.

In all honesty, though, they only came first in a group with Ukraine, Turdey, and Panama.  Not the most challenging of groups.   I think we have a chance.

Actually I just read that they changed their coach in July. So hopefully that will disrupt them a bit too.

They beat Aussies Olympic team 1- 0 a couple of weeks back.

That's quite good news.  The Aus side is pretty hopeless and managed by a numpty.

So true. I'm picking them to lose all their games. Mind you, you have to wonder about a team's chances when their great goal-scoring hope ( mental giant Archie Thompson) can't manage to name a single player in the Argentinian team....

i'm picking NZ to come away from the tourney scoreless, and/but would be delighted by any goals we score. Sorry for my pessimism . . .

I do know that China's overage players are quite useful with Deng being currently at Man Utd (scored about 20 goals on loan in the Belgian First Division last season) and Zheng currently at Charlton Athletic, having played Premiership games for them in 2006-2007 season. So will be quite a useful side.
By the way, Go the Addicks!!! (Charlton) for promotion this season- my ancestral team.

Are you serious? Ukraine U21 team were European champions 3 years ago.
How do you think NZ U20 would have gone in that group?

I think we would've beaten Panama, and would probably lose to Ukraine and Turkey but not by too much.  However, that's U-20 teams we are talking about.  Our Olympic team is far, far better than our U-20's. loyalgunner2008-08-06 15:15:29

Fair points. Though I don't know much about Panama, but agree that would have been the best chance for points.

And as for tomorrow nights game, I reckon the Chinese will be sh*tting their pants. The expectations for them are massive, and they'll be expected to stuff us. I think if we hold on for the first 25-30 mins, they might start imploding and we could get some sort of a result. That's my hope anyway.

I think it's at 11.45pm (that may be the start of coverage though, with kick-off possibly at 12).
It's only on freeview though, so if you don't have that, or don't know anyone who has, could be tricky seeing the game.

Has Stu named his starting 11 yet for the game?
Very dissapointed its not on TV 1 as I dont have freeview!
This game will be one of the most watched sporting matches a NZ team has ever participated in!

Good luck to the Lads!

Seeing as Radio Sport carried the Wimmins game last night I suspect there is a good chance they will have this as well.

Olympic coverage from both TV ONE and TVNZ Sport Extra(the freeview channel) will also be avaliable as live streaming video online via www.tvnz.co.nz/olympics

Here's the direct link to the video player: http://tvnz.co.nz/content/olympics_live_video

If you have a decent internet connection, or know someone who does, then you'll be able to watch NZ v China online :)

Right - I need help

I tried the following last night for the Ferns v Japan match.

TVNZ live Video Streaming - NZ users only
BBC Live Video Streaming - UK users only
Radio Sport - was able to listen, but now there is a message in their "listen live" window saying live streaming for Olympics is now only for NZ users. I might be okay for tonight v China, but once the Games start proper, I could be in trouble.

Korean TV - no sign of last night's game, but Honduras v Italy is on Live as I write. However, Korea play Cameroon at the same time we play China, so fat effing chance I'll see our game.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a website that doesn't care where my computer is from?

Could go either way. China has a heap of pressure on them - we have sh*tall. No one expects us to do anything.

Erm, this sounds dumb but has the Olyroos v Serbia game started yet? Reason I ask is that coverage on 7 doesn't start for another 40 minutes and I think it might be delayed. I don't want start reading the Olyroos thread in case it gives away the score!

I have got a couple of quid on the draw for NZ.  Realistic expectation I think.  Was going to throw a couple of quid on Brockie to be first scorer if I can confirm he is starting

Jacob Spoonley (G) 2 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Aaron Scott (D) 3 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Ian Hogg (D) 5 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Ryan Nelsen (D) 12 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Steven Old (D) 16 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Sam Jenkins (D) 4 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Cole Peverley (M) 7 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Simon Elliott (M) 8 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Craig Henderson (M) 11 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Jeremy Brockie (M) 10 <!-- leagueId: 71-->Christopher Killen

According to soccernet.  Not quite sure how we will lineup generally

Brazil beating Belgium is a good result for us.  A draw today and then we have to back ourselves to beat Belgium and damage limitation against Brazil, could go through with 4 points assuming all othe results go to form.

Surely much better to go for a win here? Belgium would be extremely tough for us to knock over. We need to take it to China - they will be very nervous, which will make them vulnerable.

Belgium already have a loss though, if we also lose then we are relying on other results to go our way.  But yeah, obviously a win is good
