Was he? Didn't see any games. He must have been better than Reo-Choker surely?

Nevermind, he was awesome for the Hammers and thats all that counts to me.

personally I think the best  midfielder ever produced in the history of NZ Football was the Chris "The Kiwi Crippler" Jackson - tenacious and had a crunching tackle on him....and a great barnett that time he did the leopard spots

not elliot... he has never done anything of note in a kiwi jumper... just because he mad a prem side... somehow, his msl side didn't rate him... so yeah,,, best ever no.

Bertos has the potential but for me so vicelich as a defensive midfeilder.

Not sure what to say to that other than how many other kiwis are playing for First Division club in Europe? I do concede there is some truth to what you say though.

Will be interesting to see how he goes this season if he stays injury-free.

What MLS (not msl) side didn't rate him (Elliott not Elliot)? At Galaxy he nearly won Rookie of the Year and was a consistent performer for the Crew.
"just beacuse he made a prem side" aye - you think that's not an achievement?!

leave it out - TouchMe made some real valid points.

Its like Zidane, as well.  What did he ever do?  Garbage player.  Just like the msl sides that Elliott played a few hundred games for, France never rated him.

Or in other sports, Richie McCaw - just because he made the All Blacks.......somehow!  My mum didn't rate him......so yeah.

Before Elliott made Fulham he couldn't even make the all whites. Fact.

He nearly won rookie of the year, and never improved on that. Fact.

When signed his own msl club fans said what? him? really? Your sh*tting me, right?. Fact.
He did do well for Fulham when he was fit, I admit that, but apart from that he has only ever show sporadic glimpses of quality.

A couple games doesn't qualiry you as been NZ's best ever midfielder.

Everyone knows why he wasn't included, and it was nothing to do with his ability.  And that All Whites team was rubbish!

So if his own fans were surprised that Fulham signed him, but then he went on to play well in the Premier League, does that say more about Simon Elliot the player, or the MLS and their fans?  And if thats the case why did he continually start in the MLS week in week out?  He's had major injury problems at Fulham but was quality before that.  Sure he needs to prove himself again after he comes back but I have no doubt he will, because he is quality.

TouchMe, who said Elliott was New Zealands  best ever midfielder? The question was "class midfielders".
Permalink Permalink
over 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
best or class, either way i oubt his pedigree.

Question, is every player to make the prem league class?

or has there been a lucky few to have been given a chance somehow. Elliott, has looked good at fulham when playing yes, but i suspect that's more to do with who is around him as much as anything else.

Im glad to see a kiwi go that far, i just find it humerous that a player so badly bagged over the years is now a national footballing  hero, considered to be class.

A handful of prem appearence by him show how fickle our support is, i said he was poo before he went to the epl, and largely i still think that, a couple more solid performances and i'll continue to soften my view. Others chang it as readily as their underwear.

Sounds like you are the only one bagging him. Why are you making assumptions about other peoples opinions based on YOUR 'fickle' (using your words) one?

you really don't substanciate what you say.
You said he wasn't good for AW's, but is at Fulham due to the calibre of his team mates. Doesn't that show true ability when you can compete at the higher level rather than crash and burn?

Yes, but a handful of appearences is not worth ranting about or is it, hey, we keep talking up Danny Hay though.

Not rated, yes when i talk about that i am refering to the footballing public I know. People have bagged him, me included, obviously. Its just i dont change my opinions at a whim.

Others played in the same all white squad as he did and never looked as bad as him, so that means little.

Why do you rate him... i know, because he plays in the prem, go support Chelsea, they've got really good players from all other the world that cost heaps. Reps mean nothing, i based it on the performances i've seen, and prior to Fulham nothing he did made me go wow, this guys got the goods.

Maybe you ould enlighten me about such instances.

Plus a member of Yellow Fever... and regular poster I believe.

Chris James surely has the potential to become one of our best... Every game he plays in the white shirt he stands out.

Why Touchme say that Simon Elliot couldn't even make the All Whites team as a fact implying he wasn't very good. Using this in your argument. Then say reps mean nothing in a later post. You are now saying that your earlier post means absolutly nothing.

reps as in reputations mean for little, people say sh*t about themselves and others all the time and it means nothing.

That is what i mean, just because someone plays for a decent club doesn't mean they are decent themselves.

Thus my post still stands

I base my opinion on what i've seen.

arron was class..... just sh*tting, i don't wwant to start any more arguements.

I still rate vicelich as our number 1 midfielder.

I have always been a fan of Elliot so he would be my choice. Enjoyed watching him play at LA Galaxy whenever they were on TV. Haven't seen alot of Vicelich but from what i have he is a pretty good player. But Elliot is for me the classiest.

I didn't think Elliot had the best of reputations over his career when he was dropped from the All Whites but he has rebuilt it himself by proving in the games he has played with Fulham how good of a player he is.

Elliot is so classy hes got his own cartoon on fridays in the afternoon. Vicelich beat that.
