Should be tomorrow I think.  Players have been told.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

hmmmmmm - no voicemails.

Might be time to call a press conference to announce my international retirement.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

How do you know players have been told? Do you have contact with one of the players involved?

I don't want to steal anyones thunder but the word is that there could be a couple of current central league players picked in this squad and they wear blue and white?

New Zealand Football: All Whites name Confederations Cup squad

May 7, 2009

AUCKLAND The 23-man All Whites squad for the next months FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa has a bit of everything big names, late runs and a couple of good old-fashioned bolters.

New Zealands third appearance at FIFAs tournament for continental champions will feature matches against Spain, Iraq and the hosts between June 14 and 20 with a dream date against World Champions Italy crowning a series of three friendlies to warm up for the event.

While captain Ryan Nelsen was part of both 1999 and 2003 Confederations Cup campaigns, and Simon Elliott, Chris Killen, Shane Smeltz, Duncan Oughton, David Mulligan and Mark Paston were all part of the 2003 All Whites squad that competed in France, some newer faces have successfully pressed their claims for inclusion alongside them.

Chris Woods rapid rise through the ranks of Premiership side West Bromwich Albion this year is matched by the 17-year-olds first senior international call up.

The former U-17 international began sending loud signals to All Whites coach Ricki Herberts radar with impressive goal scoring form with the clubs U-18 and reserve teams, before becoming just the fifth kiwi to play in the Premier League with a debut as a substitute against Portsmouth last month.

When I first took the job in 2005, said Herbert, I said age wasnt a barrier to selection, and that if we found a young guy he we thought was good enough wed put him in the team.

Chris has gone to a good club, spent a decent amount of time in a very competitive environment and been good enough to pave his way through to coming off the bench in a Premier League game. That speaks volumes and he thoroughly justifies his place in the squad.

Given the level Wood has reached, the tag of bolter would probably sit more comfortably with goalkeeper James Bannatyne, who grabbed headlines in February by scoring from beyond the half way line with a freak free kick in the penultimate round of the New Zealand Football Championship.

The Team Wellington glove man was included as backup to Mark Paston for New Zealands opening World Cup qualifier in Fiji in October 2007, and while the 33-year-old but has not featured in All Whites squads since then, the need for experienced back-up in South Africa earns him the nod ahead of younger candidates.

Meanwhile, Waitakere United fullback Aaron Scott and Greece-based striker Kris Bright have held their places after strong showings against Thailand recently; Kilmarnocks recent recruit Steven Old earns a recall after missing that trip to South East Asia; and Bannatynes Team Wellington team mate Andy Barron in included on the back of a stand out NZFC season.

Also on the comeback trail are Wellington Phoenix duo Leo Bertos and Ben Sigmund, working their way back to full fitness after off-season surgery. The length of Ben Sigmunds rehabilitation was initially thought to rule the passionate defender out of contention but he progressed faster than expected and received the green light from medical staff on Wednesday.

The New Zealand based squad members depart for Africa on May 27, setting up camp in Botswana ahead of opening friendlies against Botswana and Tanzania. On June 9, the All Whites move to South Africa to prepare for the Italy friendly and the eight-nation Confederations Cup, which also includes Brazil, Italy, Egypt and USA in Group B.

Awesome.

Bannatyne new nickname, from Dinner Plate Hands to Bolter Bannatyne.

Got to love the double Petone mention in the All Whites.  Not many other domestic clubs in there...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Ok I have a couple of issues:

1. You can not make the Phoenix starting 11 (actually not be offered a contract) and make the All Whites? Are we really that bad?

2. Massive, MASSIVE, ups to Petone. Fantastic, and I hope they milk it for all they are worth.

3. That side v Spain...this could be the time Spain have 100% possession in a football match.

Normo's coming home

Yes.

I'm sure will win a goal-kick or two, and maybe even get some throw-ins.

Yeah I cannot wait, I don't care if the AW's get humped, it's what you would expect but just brilliant for the team to get the exposure and experience, I just hope that it's on TV!!!

So woods and Smeltz must be the in form striker partnership right? Killen hasn't had a game for a while.. and if Woods can play in Reserve Matches/EPL then he must be ready for the international scene.

Also how has Chris James been going lately?

I agree... but Shane's not had much footie either,  maybe, as much as I hate to admit it, Bright might be a better option given that he's scoring goals in Greece and is match fit.

The articles on the front say that both ryan nelsen and chris killen have club comitments and wont be there for the warm up matches. Ryan Nelsen fair enough as he is playing. Chris killen, who is he commited to. Technically he is still on loan at norwich, but they acted in bad faith and he is back training with celtic however he is not allowed to play for them. Since norwich dont want him, y cant he turn up to the warmup games

Mate, that's tops.  Does anybody know the whole timezone differences between here and South Africa and East Africa?  Are we going to have to get up at ridiculous times to watch the friendlies and then the actual Confederations Cup?  I really hope we slaughter Botswana and Tanzania - that'd be great to watch.

On what do you base this hope?

Blind faith and optimism!!

On a side bar, health officials are reminding parents to not smoke crack when pregnant to protect the intelligence of unborn children.... there will be no slaughter, but I'd sure celebrate a 1 - 0 win

must say i am a bit nervous about the con cup stuff. lots of the aw's have not played for ages. the phoenix aw's have just started training and they will be playing sides full of match hardened players. 2 warmup games hardly sets you up to play spain. we are talking about torres, inesta, xavi and co......i would be wetting myself if i was them.

Don't think any of those players will be at the Confed Cup.

And we have three friendlies before the game with Spain ('B' I'm tempted to say).
