will be one to watch.
I think we all dream (and pray) of the NZ mens and woman teams playing with distinction - its the ol kiwi attitude of underdogs, and a world that does not even know NZ exists or give them any or hope chance - BUT thats when I think we are at our best, punching above our weight - so with little expectation, what do we have to lose.....but if the results come and like you say, any further opportunities for the boys playing overseas then it will be deemed a minor success overall...
Costa Barbarouses -Fitness?? U17's
"Cleberson joins Richard Johnson (Achilles tendon), Vince Lia
(knee), Tim Brown (hamstring), Costa Barbarouses (fitness) and
goalkeeper Mark Paston (foot) on the sideline although none is
suffering serious problems."
Reading the article on injured players in the Phoenix squad it
states Costa as an injury of fitness(lack of). I am just a little
confused.
Isn't he about to be playing in the U17 World Cup in less than
3 weeks.
1. He should be the fittest he has ever been in his
life.
2. Shouldn't the U17 squad be in camp somewhere together
anyway?
I didn't even think he was with the Phoenix squad at the
moment? It would have been great for him to get some game time with
them.
yeah - smells a little fishy (no Greek pun intended)
"Fishy" Feverish.....
Did you know Costa's nana has a Fish and Chip shop.....????
To be fair to Costa, he has had non stop football for the last year and yes he would be one of the fittest players in the team for sure. Even more so that he gets a rest, cos if we are going to get the best out of the lad then he needs to be well rested. NZ Football have posted the squad, highlighting the players who have and havent made the squad due to illness, injuries and players playing there way into the team.
Still Costa is just one player in the team who has tons of ability but I am picking there will be a couple or so that will shine through like the 20s (Draper, Spoonley, Jenkins, Keats etc)...

I have a lot of faith in the U17's. I am sure we can shock
brazil with a draw. Beat England by a goal. And beat North Korea by
a couple.
Followed on with some players getting snapped up by European
clubs.
Can I wake up yet? or just keep dreaming.

The good thing is. These kids have something realistic to aim for.
Ricki H has signed one u17 in Costa and probably 17 year old
draper as well.
These kids will be full time pro's. The other players in this
U17 team have everything to play for.
They have a lot of young nz players showing them the one. Also
Pelter is 19 and trialling with Sunderland.
This is one of the best positions I have seen NZ players in
ever.
I agree with you, the more Kiwis we can get playing at decent
levels around the world the better. It will be interesting to see
how long Ricki will wait before he starts to try and integrate some
of these young up and coming players into the All Whites. Obviously
he will have to judge it carefully, but Chris James has proved that
age is no barrier to International football if you have the skill
and temperament. I think most of them are probably still a year or
two away at the moment though.
The future is looking good.
Imagine Moss in goal, lochead at left back, Nelsen and Boyen's
CB, Mulligan Rb, Left mid James, rm Bertos, Brown and Vicelich in
the middle, Killen and Smeltz up front with Barbs, Pelter, Keat,
Spoons etc in the wings, a fairly youthfull squad with good up and
comers. Maybe Simon if fit ahead of Vicelich... maybe.
Surely one of our strongest sides in years? And looking like
its getting stronger.
Yeah it is a good team on paper.
I wonder if they will all be a available for the WCQ that are coming up in september/oct?. LondonChris2007-07-28 10:39:21
