Mmmm... well...    I think it's a bit early in the day to be thinking along these lines. Give the guy some time in EnZEd and then see how he feels about that sort of commitment.

Wouldn't his Brazilian appearances prevent him playing for the All Whites?

From Wikipedia:

Corts began his career as a promising junior at Rio powerhouse, Flamengo. After appearing for the Brazilian U/18 national team over a dozen times, with childhood friend Kak, a lack of form left him on the international sidelines for two years.

After twelve goals and a debut appearance off the bench for the Brazilian national team in their friendly match with Saudi Arabia, Corts landed a big money move to Hungarian champion, Videoton FC Fehrvr.

Im not sure, Chris James played for England at youth level but the AW's at senior level.

the rules are very straightforward;
- he must be a resident of new zealand
- he must have not played a senior "a" international for another country.  according to my info, he is not capped.  according to wiki, he is
- if he has played youth internationals, he would have had to apply for clearance to play for new zealand before the age of 21, he is 28.

so the questions are:
- has he been capped?  if so, it's not a goer
- has he been capped at any level up to U21?  if so, it's not a goer

i think it's a bit pre-mature to be talking to the press about him playing for new zealand.  he has only been in the country for a couple of months and it is also obvious that herbert has no idea whether or not he is eligable.  wouldn't it have been best to at least check it all out first?

on the other hand, we desperately need him.

For all we know that could be someone else. It will rather difficult to trace back that kind of info without officaial records as it seems many Brazilians make changes to there names e.g. Ronaldo was orginally Ronaldino.....and funnily enough Ronaldino was known as Ronaldo as a young fella.

On an interview with either one news or Tv 3 he said that the wikipedia article was completely wrong, he hasn't played for Brazil, I'm not sure if he has been capped at youth level though as that would make him ineligible as far as I know.

Where did Stuff.co.nz get that info from. I don't think NZF or Ricki would want that released so early. The government aren't going to relax residency rules to let someone in.

The article only makes sense if:
1. Daniel never played for Brazil at any level.(Ricki knows the rules because of Rory Fallon issue)
2. Daniel wants to play for NZ and Rick thought about this and maybe spoke to him before he signed with the phoenix. It was strange he got signed for 2 years and the others 1 year. Maybe having a contract for 2 years helps with residency applications. I guess he is applying for the "highly skilled" work visa for residency, makes sense from his performances so far.

Seems a bit cheeky to me.

To play for NZ he needs to be a NZ PASSPORT HOLDER and that takes FIVE years.  He would be at best 32 if not older, by that time people like James would be a million times better then him.

It was a bigger article in the Dom Post with quotes.  To be honest it struck me as a nother way of keeping the Phoenix in the news cycle and that seems a good idea to me.

Daniel's brother says he never played for Brazil, and the Wikipedia thing is rubbish.

If he eligible and wants to play for NZ get him in there I say. After all not everyone else seems to want to play and creativity is something the AW's are a little short of.

I remember TV1(I think) interviewing him a few days after he got to NZ and they asked him about what might happen in the future and he said maybe playing for NZ jokingly. I have heard of a few players that have declared to play for a country a little later then what the rule is and got away with it so it could still happen.

residency status can be fast tracked to significantly less than three years.  not sure exactly of the rules, but a scotch mate of mine just got his after his one year visitors visa expired.

maybe Daniel could do some work on Taito Phillip Fields house and he could hook him with some Taro and Povi-Masima as well as some residency action??

There was a story in the Dominion Post soon after Daniel arrived in which he said the stuff on Wikipedia was all rubbish. He hasn't played for Brazil at any level and he wasn't a childhood friend of kaka, etc etc.
So no reason why he can't play for NZ once he does the time...

A short Portuguese class for you Eric...  "...inho" is the diminutive form, that makes something smaller or more cute, and it gets added to a lot of people's names.  Your name would become Erikinho for example.

In Brazil "Ronaldo" and "Ronaldinho" are known as "Ronaldinho Carioca" = wee Ronaldo from Rio and "Ronaldinho Gaucho" = wee Ronaldo from the South.

Ronaldo is still called Ronaldinho (and Fenomeno )in Brasil, because Ronaldinho is called Ronaldinho Gaucho. Gaucho being the name for someone from the south of Brazil. Black Plague2007-08-21 22:43:36

So.... if we get Daniel to call himself Daniel Gauchoinho, we can claim he's born of small parents in Mosgiel and ... Bob's your cowboy - we've got ourselves a new All White (YES!!)

wonder if Ricky's thought of that?

I'm pretty certain that residency is not good enough. You can get that immediately. I gained permanent residency before I'd even set foot in the country.

Citizenship is the key. You can get that after three years of permanent residency.

Hence why when he became a "man" he dropped the "inho". Thanks for the teachings master but they are somewhat unnessessay. The point of the matter was not infact the names but infact the limitations of the resource. The names were nothing more than an example. For more, please apply within.
