Just wondering if there's anyone who's going to the WC but not on the Fever Tour, or any other tour? I.e. a DIY tour?

If there is anyone, how are you guys getting to games etc.? Perhaps you may like to collaborate?

My old flatmate and I are doing the WC DIY-styles given that we'd be a real pain for any tour organiser (he lives in Sydney, we want to go via Singapore, would only need a week or so accommodation due to safari and staying in Nelspruit etc. etc.). We have TST-4s and have applied for tickets to Spain v. Chile on 25 June in Pretoria.

I was thinking of going alone and staying with the natives in Soweto. Thoughts?

Three for me, and two for them.

Reminds me of driving through the Namib desert on our way to South Africa on the back of a truck with Kaiser Chiefs 'so far away from home ' song blasting out to no-one at about a million decibels. Ahh the memories....

Pathetic. Not apathetic.

BTW I'm doing DIY tour - meeting up with some mates from London. They are organised, I'm not - so if they havn't included me in any plans I'll let you know. But as a tip, if you look at the grounds we are playing at on fifa website, it shows the good things to do in each area, and that is useful for building an itinerary around non football tourist activities.

I'm there for the whole tournament with two other mates, ones a pom, ones a kiwi with South African parents which is how we're doing our accommodation for free! Looking forward to getting into some safari action, and seeing the whole country!

Does anyone know if any charter flights will be operated from Auckland to Jo'Burg during the WC? Or people will just have to rely on travelling via Sydney?

Charter Flights!
SYdney one of many options. Cathay, Malaysian, Emirates, Singapore airlines all operate to SA via their hubs in SEA.

Thanks. We're pretty much sorted now anyway - thank you FIFA website and South Africa Lonely Planet. Although happy to collaborate with others if people are short of stuff to do and it coincides with what we're doing as it's only my old flatmate and I and we have a car for at least half the time we're there (mostly when we're based in Pretoria).

However, if anyone is interested, we managed to get some really cheap flights to Cape Town from Johannesburg last week (around $150 NZD each) with Kulula (codeshare with British Airways apparently...). Not sure if they're still available though.

Hiya. We're not sure how we're getting to Rustenburg, so definitely keen on a bit of collaboration on that. We're then off on safari, and going to be staying in Nelspruit for the second game (rather than come back to Pretoria from the Nelspruit area the day before the second game). For the third game, we've hired a car for that week, so will drive out to Polokwane. If T-Dog (said companion) hasn't offered a ride to anyone else, we'd be more than happy to pick you guys up. We'll probably only do a day trip for that one.

If any of that works for you, flick me your email via PM.

We're just finalising what to do. Doing DIY with a brit and a kiwi with SA ancestry meaning car and accomodation hook ups!

Im just hoping like crazy that we're going to end up sitting with people from NZ who are as nutty as we are!!!

Hi, me and a mate are doing a DIY tour as well. Trying to nail down accom at the moment. Looking to spend 6 days in Rustenburg/Joburg from the 14th to the 20th, then 3 or 4 around Nelspruit/Kruger. Then up to Polokwane for a night then back down to...somewhere!
Travel to and from games seems to be the biggest issue, especially to Polokwane, so if any one is heading that way from Nelspruit area or Joburg we would be mighty interested, and happy to provide money/booze/whatever.

Any and all tips much appreciated!

Bump. Anyone got any further advice/offers of rides from Nelspruit/Kruger region to Polokwane? We also need to get back to Pretoria for a game the next day (Spain Chile I think)

Cheers!

Hi all!

I'm a Sydney fan going to the WC with no plans, I've so far only managed to get myself tickets to NZ games (the Paraguay and Slovakia (?) ones) so am looking forward to spending some time with the Kiwi contingent in SA. I have no idea about SA so would love to keep in touch with those of you who are going DIY style! If anyone wants to plan a bit of the trip together send me a PM. I'm also on a very tight budget so if anyone manages to find cheap accommodation around the place let me know!

Cheers

Hi mate, me and a buddy are also doing the WC on a tight budget. Not the best idea I grant you, but there it is. At the moment we are stuggling to get transport form Joburg/Pretoria to Nelspruit for the Italy game, then on to Polokwane for the Paraguay game. We have to be back in Pretoria on the 25th for Chile Spain. Any help/advice/offers much appreciated!

Car hire is the best bet.  WE got a car from avis to Polokwane for a non-AWs game.  THink it is around $150 per day from memory.

Yep completely agree. We're in Nelspruit for the Italy game (post-safari), but will be heading to Polokwane from Pretoria and we're happy to do a convoy of sorts if people are keen (we already have a full car, so unable to offer rides).

Also, I would sort your accommodation ASAP - I would recommend basing yourself in a big city and commuting as accommodation is really expensive in places like Nelspruit, Polokwane etc. Basically because it's really limited.

Yep we are well on the way with accom. What is the best way to book car hire? A lot of places I have checked are saying no cars available for the selected period.

I used avis a week or so ago and they had some car avaiable.  They seem to have a number of branches in Jo'burg.  We used the Sandton branch as it was closest to our accomadation.

Yeah have had a look at Avis, we would prefer to pick up from Rustenburg which they offer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for accom in Polokwane? We get back from a safari through Kruger late on the 23rd, and need to be in Pretoria for Spain Chile on the 25th.

Hi everyone/anyone.

Until lastnight, I was going to the World Cup with a friend on a DIY trip I have organised 99% of by myself. Anyway long story short, he bailed on me just lastnight, less than 10 weeks out from my departure, because he can no longer 'afford' it!! (I wont get started on it) I made the decision to go to the WC based on budgeting that we were going halves on a number of things, such as accomo, hire vehicle, petrol etc etc. so effectively, a portion of my trip costs have DOUBLED overnight!!! I have accomo arranged/organised in a number of places (including the host cities of NZ's 3 pool matches) and a hire vehicle (with GPS) booked for most of my stay (14/06 - 16/07) minus a week prior to 14/06 and 4 days that I have booked a Kruger National Park tour (01/07 - 04/07). I have a South African friend who has generously hooked me up with a large amount of free or cheap accomodation around the country!!

Anyway, point isI'm a 23 year old female, CRAZY about football whose dream of going to the World Cup to support her country (of which the opportunity may never arise to do so EVER again!!!) has reached a huge stumbling block and has just become far less affordable. Not to mention, how fun it's going to be going to the games alone and going out after the games by myself etc etc.
I have tickets to NZ's 3 pool matches plus a round of 16 (conditional of their qualification) plus Greece vs Argentina and France vs Mexico (Not sure what my friend is going to do with his already paid for tickets to NZ's 3 pool matches). I was doing it 'DIY' in the beginning to make it more affordable for myself rather than as apart of a preorganised tour, but it has obviously backfired on me!!

If anybody would like rides between host cities and is willing to contribute to my hire vehicle and petrol and/or is keen to adopt a NZ supporter for some fun times before and/or after games etc, PLEASE either reply to my post or send me an email at: bronynz@hotmail.com ASAP!! Depending on how many of you there are, I MIGHT even be able to jack you up with some free accomodation!!! (no gaurantees) So if you're half crazy about football, organised, committed and think you can help me out in anyway, then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get in touch.

If you email me then I can give you a good run down of my planned itinerary and we can see when/where we might be able to help each other out!!

Im also really eager to fit in as much sightseeing/touristy stuff as poss in and around the days Im not attending matches etc. Im a fairly seasoned traveller, infact travelling/working abroad and working at home to save for travel to a number of continents and playing as much football as possible is what my life has consisted of since leaving High School..so I'm pretty confident I'll be ok on my own, just would obviously be FAR more fun, FAR more affordable and possibly a little safer (well give my mother a tiny bit of 'peace of mine') to share part of the amazing experience WITH some other crazy football fans!!!!!

Look forward to hearing from you.anyone..

Cheers,

I hope you find someone (not you smithy) for the tour - accommodation is freakin outrageous over there, if you haven't looked you've probably got no idea how much you're saving.

Hi all,

We have NZ TST Tickets with a hire car from Durban (watching Germany v Aus) to Rustenburg, then driving to Nelspruit, then Safari, then driving to Polokwane for 1 night and then to Jo'burg the following day.

We also have a hire car from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town if anyone wants to join that trip too.

There are two of us and we have a Nissan Tiida, so will easily fit another 2 people in with luggage. If anybody wants a ride between any of these places, drop me a line!

If you want further details of our Itinerary, and if it fits into your plans, you can find more information here:
