Here is the response I received this morning from Barry Maister. Decent of him to reply, but not surprisingly non-committal at this stage.
Thank you for your comments
ALL Games team selections are made against selection criteria which have been agreed between NZOC and the Sports body, some 12 months ago
We try to make objective decisions to ensure fairness across all sports

Thank you for your comments
No decisions have yet been made
Selections into Games teams for ALL sports is a fair and transparent one, based on meeting the criteria agreed between the sport itself and the NZOC
The NZOC is well aware of the significance of football in the world, and could demonstrate to you ways in which we have already supported the sport,( and will continue to do so) outside of Olympic selections

Here's my email to the NZOC, followed by their kind response:

To whom it may concern,
Ive been closely following the press in New Zealand regarding the qualification of the New Zealand football teams for the Beijing Olympics. I note that progression though the Oceanic qualifying tournament may not guarantee these teams a place in the New Zealand Olympic squad that travels to China.
If it means anything to the selection officials, heres at least one Kiwi living abroad who has a fairly cynical view of the Olympics as a whole, yet in spite of my general lack of enthusiasm for the event generally, Id love the opportunity to see our football players in this tournament. Whilst I recognise that the chances for medals might be slim, and the cost of sending a team of footballers is vast compared to an individual athlete, I know that the Olympic tournament is a great proving ground for our players who might seldom have the opportunity to play their sport on such a stage.
Football is undeniably a growing force in New Zealand sport, and I read with daily pleasure that the profile of the game, and its participation number is rising. So heres my lone voice urging you to look favorably on selecting both the womens and mens teams for Beijing.
Kind Regards,
Phillip Smith

Because if not, the whole qualifying tournament would have merely been an exercise of us denying Oceania a spot at the Olympics, which frankly would be disgraceful.

Thank you for your comments
The NZOC selectors have the task of selecting all teams against pre determined standards ( agreed to in this case by Football NZ and NZOC, some 12 months ago)
We try to do this fairly by being consistent across all sports
The selectors are well aware of the implications of selection or non selection

Appreciated your reasoned concern
I can only assure you that the NZOC selectors are fully aware of the consequences of any teams selection or non selection into the Games team
We work off a set of agreed performance criteria, signed off some 12 months ago between Football NZ and the NZOC
We are charged with the task of achieving some consistency of standards between sports
We separate this from our support for all our member sports, and our educational work with sport, and through schools, so feel our byline will always be appropriate to reflect our wider and ongoing work in the Olympic movement

To whom it may concern,
As a long time supporter of football in New Zealand I would dearly like to see both our U23 Men's and Women's sides competing in this years Olympic Games in Beijing.
Football is one of the fastest growing sports among youth in New Zealand and this would seem like a great opportunity to showcase to the New Zealand public their future heroes.
We acknowledge that is difficult to compete in what is the global game and our chances of winning a medal would appear remote, but this would seem the perfect time to give our youngsters something to aim for in the future.
After all , as your website notes : Our vision is:
"To contribute to a better New Zealand by educating youth through sport and the Olympic ideal."
Kind Regards

BRING ON THE OLYMPICS
The NZOC has announced it has voted unanimously to send both the men's womens football teams to the Olympics
New Zealand Football will be represented at the Beijing Olympics.
The New Zealand Olympic Committee has announced it has voted unanimously to send both the men's under 23 Oly-Whites and the women's Football Ferns to the Games. The selection marks the first time a New Zealand football team has been sent to the Olympics.
New Zealand Football CEO Graham Seatter says he is thrilled to hear the good news. He says he feels fantastic and the decision was crucial for the game to keep moving forward in New Zealand.
Both teams won their qualifying tournaments, but had to prove to the NZOC selection committee that the teams would be competitive at the Games.
