Hi all,

A handful of international fixtures have been confirmed for the first couple of weeks in 2009.

The Football Ferns are Guangzhou-bound for the Four Nations Cup, and their schedule reads:
Jan 8 - Korea Republic (non-cap-earning friendly)
Jan 11 - China, 1am NZ time
Jan 12 - Korea Republic, 10pm NZ time
Jan 14 - Finland, 10pm NZ time

Also, the Junior All Whites (NZ U-17s) will be playing their counterparts from Chile. The only game I'm currently aware of (I'm sure there will be at least one other) takes place at Allen Hill Stadium, home ground of North Shore United, on Friday Jan 9 at 6pm.

This match is part of the JAWs' preparations for the Oceania U-17 World Cup qualifiers in Fiji in March, the winner of which qualifies for the Junior World Cup Finals, which take place in Nigeria in October - November.

Lastly, Football Ferns defender Rebecca Smith will be flying the flag for NZ in the inaugural W-League semi-finals. Her Newcastle Jets team is playing Canberra United on Jan 10 at EnergyAustralia Stadium, with the victors to take on the winner of the Queensland Roar v. Sydney FC semi-final the following Saturday.

Newcastle finished second in the round-robin phase, while Melbourne Victory, featuring Kiwi stars Marlies Oostdam and Rebecca Tegg, lost their last two games of the season to miss out on the play-offs - they needed to win their final match to confirm a top-four finish, but went down to goals in the last two minutes at Central Coast Mariners, 2-0 the outcome.

Cheers,

JR

JR,

Can you tell us were the team for the Junior All Whites (NZ U-17s has been named. I'm sure the team profiles on the NZ Football site are for the previous team.

Nothing sighted as yet, Senor Nightz.

I envisage there'll be something emanating from NZF either tomorrow or early in the New Year, confirming both the squad and this visit by Chile's U17 squad to assist with the preparations.

Cheers,

I watched one of Newcastle's W-League games. Rebecca Smith was the best on the park by a long shot - made about 10 goal saving tackles , was ridiculous.

No, Santy, but I can advise that it's a Chile U-18 squad which is visiting.

They depart Santiago on Tuesday, and play the Junior All Whites (U17s) on Friday at 6pm at Allen Hill Stadium, and again on Sunday - Auckland venue and kick-off time currently unknown.

Re the latter game, common sense suggests that the game takes place at Douglas Field around midday, as there's a NZFC fixture taking place at that venue from 3pm.

Cheers,

quick gripe - why would NZ soccer not have any info about this u17 game on their website - is there anywhere else that may have the squad for this game on friday?

I'm also still in the dark about who's in the NZ u17s squad. Surely its been picked by now.

The squad is now on NZ Football website. I note that nobody form Wellington made the squad.

A little suprised by a couple of absences,

The Blackurn boy Cameron Lindsey is not in the squad, surely he's our best young defender, Chris Woods who i think is still 16, and not sure on their age, may be too old, but the Rojas boy from Waikato and Caleb Rufer who is playing in Germany now... albeit not for a top team youth side.

Marco - 5/11/1991
Rufer - 11/10/1991
Wood - 07/12/1991

All 17.

You also assume Lindsay or anyone else made themselves available.

What was the birthdate cut off date for this side?

For 2009 Finals at U17 level, those born on or since 1 January 1992 are eligible.

The birthdates quoted above mean the players concerned are too old!!

Cameron Lindsay (Blackburn) and Andrew Milne ( Glasgow Rangers) had to return to the UK for club duties. Due to the short notice of the games against Chile they were unable to arrange extended releases from their clubs and alter return travel arrangements they were committed too

Both were in the original squad of 26 and are keen to be avaliable for the  u17 Oceania World Cup playoffs if selectected

I missed the first U-17 game against U-18 Chile, anyone got the score from tonight?

1-0 loss. NZ played ok but tbh it was a typical 'close but not really that close' type defeat for a NZ football side at international level.

Three for me, and two for them.

Understood.  Still its the sort of exposure they need.
