Wouldn't it be fantastic to see the Junior Ferns and Football Ferns hosting their respective World Cup Finals in 2018 & 2019? :-)

That would be great following on from the men's u-20 finals next year and really give football a boost in this country.
I'm sure if we don't get these women's tournaments then, we'll be awarded them in the next decade.
FIFA are to be commended for letting Oceania have their turn at hosting all the FIFA youth world cups - the women's u-20 being the logical next step.
I've often thought we're comparable to the Republic of Ireland  - Ireland was weak in football before the 1980's and 1990's , it's national team decidely second-rate and football languishing behind gaelic football and rugby union.
However some progressive administration lead to the Jack Charlton era of national team success and a lot of success in youth football in UEFA and FIFA tournaments.
Result:Football is the most popular sport in Ireland now and the national football team is the side the whole country follows, with players like Robbie Keane and Roy Keane the biggest sports stars.

Women's football there has been slower to take off perhaps though...
I've no doubt football is set to increase a lot in popularity here in the next decade  -men's and women's....

Be interesting as a comparison to see how Australia do against Japan on Wednesday night in the opening game in their group in the Asian Cup. Apparently four or five Japan players have not been released by their German clubs who are in mid-season (will have available the same team they fielded against the Football Ferns) but Australia have no such problems:

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/weakened-japan-still-big-threat-says-williams/90434

If Japan thump the Matildas, it'll make our girls' performance very creditable.

In Germany, Abby Erceg scored the winner for USV Jena away to Bayer Leverkusen on the weekend, leaving Jena fifth on the table behind Bayern Munich. Erceg's fifth goal from 19 games so far. Jena have three Football Ferns (striker Hearn - nine goals - and defender Percival - two goals too), all regular starters.

NZF making a play for Women's World Cup. If Blatter is re-elected, reckon we'd be a good chance.

NZ u-20 women lost 3-1 to Brazil in Rio on Thursday morning.

Next game vs. Brazil on Saturday morning NZT

Preparing for the FIFA u-20 Women's World Cup, Canada August 5 - 24

NZ's group includes France, Paraguay and Costa Rica.

NZ squad and tour details here:

http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/index.php?id=11&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=2945&tx_ttnews[backPid]=10&cHash=95e98d235c

Five NZ players play for US universities, plus one from Adelaide United.

An exciting time for our young women to be over in Brazil.

Interestingly, women were banned from playing football in Brazil for much of the twentieth century:

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/feb/17/brazilian-women-football-escape-favelas

"Despite the national passion for football and success of the men's team, the women's game has been slow to establish itself in Brazil; the fourth incarnation of a women's league was launched last September. Between 1941 and 1979, a law – originally imposed by the then-ruling military dictator – prohibited girls and women from playing football as it was considered "incompatible with the female form". Women's teams have lacked sponsorship, support and media attention – even despite the homegrown success of Marta, routinely named as the world's best women's footballer."

The game in Taupo will be NZ's 200th women's "A" international.

Wellington has hosted two of the 35 women's home internationals which have taken place to date in our history. The first was on 24 May 1980, and the second on 23 October 1991, both against Australia.

The vast majority (24) have taken place in Auckland, the centre of operations for (hence undisputed home of) NZ women's football. :-)

Other NZ venues used have been:  Hamilton 3 (1982, 1987, 1991), Christchurch 4 (1980, 1986 x 2, 1991), Whangarei 1 (2012), New Plymouth 1 (1982).

Non-cap earning internationals have taken place in Christchurch (2), Hamilton (2) and Auckland (1).

With the exceptions of U-19 internationals in Wellington and Hamilton in 1989, three U-20 internationals in New Plymouth in 1994, two U-19 internationals in Porirua in 1999, the U-17 WWC Finals match in Wellington in 2008, and NZ B internationals at the 1986 Oceania Nations Cup tournament in Christchurch in 1986, all international home fixtures for NZ women's teams other than the Football Ferns (e.g. Junior Ferns, Young Ferns) have taken place in Auckland.

The bulk of these Auckland fixtures have been a result of Auckland serving as host venue for various Oceania qualifying tournaments over the years. Look to play them elsewhere, and the island nations will withdraw from the tournament on cost grounds. This has happened twice in the last six years, and on each occasion, NZ has qualified for age-grade FIFA finals without kicking a ball in anger - not a practice which impresses FIFA, of that you can be assured!

Cheers,

JR

Probably to suit Brazil's schedule - they are playing in other countries on the way here such as against France in French Guiana.
Also maybe to suit Brazilian TV who could be broadcasting the games?
Strong 27 player squad named:
Four have more than 80 caps - including Marta dubbed the best female player in history (91 caps, 85 goals and she's only 28)
Four players, including Marta, play for one club, Tyreso in Sweden; two in Norway, two in Korea - rest in Brazil.
A mix of experience (12 have 10 or more caps) and newer players (12 have single figure caps, three uncapped)
Brazil played two matches against the Matildas in Brisbane in April - won the first 1-0 and lost the second 2-1

What happened? Anyone know? I know we have 25 girls from our junior club Awakeri FC traveling down to the Taupo game this Thursday. Its a school night, so they wont get home till 11pm, but they're all really excited about it.

If it's anything like tonight they will love it. Ferns played very well - no stats obviously but seemed to dominate possession and well worth the 1-1 draw, plus went close on other occasions including a great header from Wilkinson hitting the bar. Ria Percival is an absolute machine up and down the right flank, and Rebekah Stott played the ball out of defence superbly.

Only 2000 there but I thoroughly recommend anyone in or near Taupo to get along - this team is great to watch

Football Ferns squad named for World Cup qualifiers in PNG October 25, 27, 29 (vs. Tonga, PNG, Cook Islands):

http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/index.php?id=11&tx_ttn...

10 play overseas, eight in NZ (six outfield players + the two goalies)

All the ten overseas players play in some of the top women's leagues in the world too (four in Germany, one in the latest incarnation of the US women's league, one in Sweden, two in England, two in Japan and Rosie White plays for the US national college champs UCLA in what is a very good league too).

Abby Erceg is playing in both the US and German leagues - she's listed by NZF as playing for USV Jena in Germany but is on loan there from her US club, Chicago, since it is the off-season in the US.

The qualifying tournament is being played in Kokopo, the capital of East New Britain province, the major one on the large New Britain island in PNG (island pop. about 500,000; Kokopo 20,000).

It's only been the provincial capital since 1994 when a volcanic eruption destroyed the previous one, Rabaul, 20 km away.

Rabaul and New Britain are famous from WWII when the Japanese invaded and the US landed there.

Described by US troops as one of the worst hell holes of the Pacific war (swamps and mosquitoes).

This is interesting from Wiki:

"New Britain was largely formed by volcanic processes, and there are several active volcanoes on the island, including Ulawun (the highest volcano in Papua New Guinea), Langila, the Garbuna Group, the Sulu Range, and the volcanoes Tavurvur and Vulcan of the Rabaul caldera. A major eruption of Tavurvur in 1994 destroyed the East New Britain provincial capital of Rabaul. Most of the town still lies under metres of ash, and the capital has been moved to nearby Kokopo."

Two hat-tricks, four other players scored a brace.

Helen Collins had never scored for NZ - and her first goals were a hat-trick. That must surely be rare in international football.

37 degrees at kick-off. Phew !!! Would have been pretty humid too.

Good to see teenage defender Meikayla Moore from Chch play the full 90 (maybe the first time she's done so?)

I sat next to her mum and grandparents at the national women's cup final at English Park last year (held before the Chatham Cup Final).

Next game is vs. hosts PNG on Monday at 5 pm NZT

Should be a much tougher game with home advantage being a big factor you'd think.

Interestingly, Moore is not the only Mainland rep playing in this tournament. Dayna Napa and Lee Maoate-Cox, who both play for the University Senior Women's team, are representing the Cook Islands. The Cooks went down 4-1 to Papua New Guinea, but it sounds as if the score flatters Papua New Guinea a little. And just to keep it local, Maoate-Cox scored with a Pen for the Cooks and was the teams standout player according to the report

Football Ferns v Norway (ranked #9 in the world)

Wednesday morning 7 am

Not broadcast in NZ (maybe it's not on Norwegian TV either?)

Came across this fun video series which has a new episode every month fronted by Football Fern Ali Riley and her England international team-mate Anita Asante. Features on "Womens Soccer United" probably the world's premier women's football website:

http://www.womenssoccerunited.com/groups/the-aa-sh...

Ali certainly has some illustrious team-mates at her Swedish club FC Rosengard, including Brazilian legend Marta, regarded by many as the best women's player of all time.

WSU "They are really impressive moves. Marta does feature in this video, they are all professional players currently playing for FC Rosengård in Sweden: Anita Asante - FC Rosengård & England National Team, Ali Riley - FC Rosengård & New Zealand National Team, Marta - FC Rosengård & Brazil National Team, Ramona Bachmann - FC Rosengård & Switzerland National Team."
